The 2007 Lexus ES 350 comes as a single front-wheel-drive model with a 272-horsepower, 3.5L V6 and a six-speed automatic transmission. Both the engine and the transmission bring improvements in performance and fuel efficiency, while the new six-speed has fewer parts and better drivability than the five-speed it replaces, according to Lexus. The ES is slightly longer and wider than before, with swoopier styling and a shorter rear deck to fit in with the so-called L-finesse design theme. The ES 350 comes with a very generous list of standard equipment inside, including dual-zone automatic climate control with rear-seat ducts, 10-way power front seats, and steering-wheel-mounted controls for the audio system and trip computer. Other standard amenities include soft-tone LED interior lighting, lighted cup holders, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with an integrated compass.A push-button start system with SmartAccess keyless entry, which allows the driver to enter and start the vehicle without ever removing the key fob from a pocket or purse, is also standard. The ES comes with more available luxury features and high-tech gadgets than most cars in its price range. Most notable is the new Pre-Collision System (PCS), which uses sensors from the dynamic radar cruise control to help anticipate an impending collision. If PCS determines one is unavoidable, it retracts the seatbelts, primes the brake assist feature, and can automatically apply the brakes to a degree if the driver does not react. There's also an available intuitive park assist feature that uses ultrasonic sensors to detect objects ahead of or behind the vehicle, showing the distances in a dashboard display. There are also several packages that bring additional luxury and convenience features. The Premium Package adds rear side air bags, Bluetooth wireless capability, and memory functions for seat, mirror, and steering wheel adjustment. The Premium Plus package adds a driver's seat cushion extender, rain-sensing wipers, heated and ventilated front seats, among other features, while the Ultra-Luxury Package also includes the panorama glass roof, rear backup camera, perforated leather seating, a power rear sunshade, HID headlights, the navigation system, and wood and leather trim.Other options include high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps with an intelligent adaptive lighting system that swivels the headlamps into corners, heated and ventilated front seats, and a large panorama glass roof.An available 300-watt, 14-speaker Mark Levinson audio system appeals to audiophiles, with 10 channels of amplification and an especially low level of total harmonic distortion. Both sound systems accept iPods and portable MP3 players, and include a six-disc changer.Eight air bags are standard on the ES, including new knee air bags for the driver and front passenger, along with front side air bags and full-length side curtain bags. Rear-seat side air bags are available. The front air bags for both the driver and passenger can deploy with variable force, depending on the severity of the accident. To complete the array of safety features, stability control is now standard on the ES 350, along with antilock brakes and integrated electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), and brake assist.Other clever safety features include a special coating on front side windows to help keep them clear of rainwater, and a rear backup camera that's included with the optional navigation package. The navigation system has been upgraded with a new display and more points of interest.

Lexus fans vote Solar Flare for new RC F hue

Wed, 18 Jun 2014

What's in a name? When it comes to model nameplates, quite a lot, and automakers go to considerable lengths to find just the right one. Same goes for the names of the colors in the catalog (save for maybe the Rape Yellow in the extensive Bugatti palette), but every once in a while, an automaker will open it up for suggestions from the public.
SRT did that when it introduced a new shade of blue for its Viper, as did Chevy for the pale green on the Volt. And last month, Lexus followed a similar path when it asked fans on Facebook to come up with a name for the new shade of orange for the RC F.
Fans suggested names like Tangerine Flame, Outrageous Orange and Fiery Orange, but ultimately the winning submission that Lexus selected was Solar Flare. The name was suggested by five individuals and will now enter the catalog of colors for the new luxury muscle coupe with its 450-horsepower 5.0-liter V8.

Did Lexus make a BMW? Or did BMW make a Lexus? This and other 2017 surprises

Fri, Dec 29 2017

It's that time of year again. The calendar is about to reach its end, Star Trek Cats 2018 is about to take its place, and I'm reflecting about all the cars that graced my driveway this year or summoned me to exotic places. You know, like Stuttgart or Phoenix. In 2017, I drove at least 57, and as I perused the list of them, I started to notice a common refrain: "This car surprised me." Most were pleasant surprises, but there were a few head scratchers and facepalms for good measure. In both cases, it was generally the result of car companies seemingly trying to break out of an existing mold. Nowhere was that more apparent than the pair of Lexuses slathered in Infrared paint: The LS 500 that left me this week and the LC 500 that was my favorite car of 2017. Though Lexus has been trying to shake its crusty, gold-packaged reputation for some time now, its efforts always seemed like an old man choosing Hollister to redo his wardrobe after realizing it hasn't been updated since 1987. I fell in love with the LC, genuinely floored by its near-perfect take on the GT. It's characterful in sound, appearance and tactility. It was at home in the city, in the mountain and on the open road. It was both comfortable and thrilling, and after driving the mechanically related LS 500, I can report that the LC's talents aren't an outlier. The LS 500's turbo V6 may make different noises than the LC's naturally aspirated V8, but it nevertheless invigorates the cabin when the car is placed in Sport+ mode. The steering is truly communicative, body motions are kept in miraculous check, and I absolutely forgot I was in an enormous luxury limo ... and a Lexus one at that. It was everything that the BMW 530e was not. I drove that on the exact same roads and was utterly bored the entire time. Generally doughy, lifeless steering, more distant than Planet 9. And no, the plug-in hybrid powertrain had nothing to do with that. At least it shouldn't. The Porsche Panamera S e-Hybrid I also drove this year proves that, as do the Hyundai Ioniqs, which are surprisingly adept and fun little cars regardless of what powers their wheels (Hyundai + hybrid = fun really blew me away). I would drive that Lexus LS F Sport over the BMW 5 Series any day of the week, which seems like a shocking thing to say in relation to either car. While Lexus is seemingly breaking out of its old crusty mold, BMW seems to be climbing into one.

Physical and virtual gaming worlds collide in Lexus IS Hybrid promo

Fri, 13 Sep 2013

This is really, really cool. In order to promote its new IS Hybrid, Lexus borrowed an airplane hangar, a former Formula One driver and what we imagine was some serious technological knowhow to create one of the most interesting games we've ever seen. It's called Trace Your Road.
Lexus invited some of its Facebook fans out for the game, which put them in the passenger seat of a Lexus IS Hybrid with former F1 shoe Jarno Trulli. They were then handed a tablet and asked to trace out a road, which was projected onto the floor of the hangar. Trulli had to follow the ever-changing path as his passenger kept on tracing away. It looks like it'd be an absolute riot.
This is probably the coolest automotive promotional video since Audi strapped paintball guns on a couple of RS4s. Take a look below to watch the full video from Lexus. We promise, it's worth two minutes of your time.
