This is the truck you want the keys to when the zombies come. Until then it's a damn cool ride to the beach or the mountains. This beauty will turn heads, inspire mini-photoshoots and thumbs ups all over town. Except from Land Cruiser owners who will be jealous and pretend you don't exist. You can legally seat seven with the twin jump-seats and eleven if your friends are feeling inspired. Here's the story of this one. I had another which saved me when a garbage truck ran a red light and hit me broadside at 50 miles an hour. I walked away without a scratch and I had to have another. This beauty had to been bought new by a competitive sailboat racer who used it to tow boats to races all over the country. Although the drivetrain is exceptionally robust at 80,000 miles it had seen enough. The body was in immaculate condition but it didn't have a heart. Simultaneously as I was trolling through eBay and I found a BRAND NEW engine from a 2003 (larger 4.6L v8) with only 500 miles on it. I had both the body and the engine shipped to a Rover specialist in Connecticut where it was installed and the transmission was rebuilt for good measure. Since then I've added the off road bumper, Old Man EMU springs all the way around with a 2" lift, over-sized all-terrain tires, roof rack and dozens of smaller upgrades. It's got 112k miles now so only about 32k on the new engine, roughly 5k a year since I've had her. It was just inspected and I installed a new battery, brake pads and rotors all around a couple months ago. I've never used it to commute, only as an escape pod from NYC, my country side ride for me and my friends. I've included some pictures of her at night following hurricane Sandy, a recent one following the snow-pocalypse and a funny one from a road trip. She's an unstoppable champ. It's a Land Rover though and by definition a work in progress. If you're a hands-on guy/girl always looking for an opportunity to upgrade or tinker, this is the PERFECT car for you. And by this, I mean all Land Rovers. I love them, don't get me wrong, but know you're making a lifestyle choice. She's been my love and hobby since 2007 but it's time to pass the torch. She's mechanically quite sound but she's also 14 years old and needs a lot of little things. For someone who wants to put in a handful of weekends, it would be fun and easy. If I could justify keeping a car in the city any longer I'd do it in a heartbeat. |

California adapts ZEV mandate with PHEVs for smaller automakers
Fri, Jun 5 2015California is the nation's largest market for zero-emissions vehicles with over 100,000 of them estimated to be on the roads there. The state's goal is to keep that number growing every year. To that end, the California Air Resources Board is now tweaking its rules in a way that might not boost ZEVs but could mean more plug-in hybrids for the Golden State. Jaguar Land Rover, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Subaru, and Volvo asked for an exemption to the state's zero-emissions vehicle mandate last year due to their relatively small development budgets compared to larger automakers. CARB denied their request but did craft a compromise, according to Automotive News. Rather than being required to offer a ZEV in the state, companies with an annual global revenue of less than $40 billion, like those in this group, may instead sell plug-in hybrids to earn ZEV credits. The companies aren't completely off the hook, though. If these plug-in hybrids don't earn enough credits, the corporations must buy them on the market to make up the difference. Automakers with popular electric models like Nissan and Tesla have made a big business through this trading system by selling their surplus to rivals. Tesla alone pocketed $51 million in the first quarter from this part of its business, according to Automotive News. The changes to the regulations also aren't set in stone, yet. CARB is meeting in 2016 and could adjust things further at that time. Jaguar Land Rover reveals Bond cars [w/video]
Tue, Sep 15 2015We interrupt your regularly scheduled Frankfurt Motor Show coverage to bring you something far cooler. Jaguar Land Rover has officially introduced the cars it's lending to the latest James Bond film, Spectre. There's not much that wasn't previously covered as part JLR's February 2015 release, although there are some comments from the stars, as well as a pair of behind-the-scenes videos. At the very forefront of the British brand's charge is the Jaguar C-X75, the stillborn concept that set hearts aflutter with its handsome looks and its innovative turbine-powered drivetrain. According to Jaguar Land Rover, the orange supercar will be piloted by baddie Dave Bautista as part of an enormous chase scene throughout Rome. Meanwhile, Eve Moneypenny, played by Naomie Harris in her second Bond flick, will pilot the blacked-out Defender. For those that remember Skyfall, Miss Moneypenny spent most of the film's pre-title sequence tearing through Istanbul, Turkey behind the wheel of a silver Defender. Joining the Defender is the most powerful vehicle Land Rover has ever produced. The new Range Rover Sport SVR will show up wearing a menacing black paint job and featuring some extra lighting on both its roof and in its bumper. It's not clear who will be driving the 550-horsepower SVR, but in the photos released by JLR, it's shown trading places with a pair of Defenders as they rampage through the Austrian snow. Jaguar Land Rover building new R&D center for hybrids, EVs, autonomous cars
Wed, 25 Sep 2013The success of Jaguar Land Rover in recent years has largely been down to a resurgent product lineup, but a recent move into the research and development will see the British-based, Indian-owned brands take the fight to its German rivals more aggressively than ever before.
JLR is investing 50 million pounds ($80,345,000, as of this writing) in a joint R&D center in central England. The move will more than triple its staff dedicated to research, from 150 to 500, with Wolfgang Epple, JLR's Director of Research and Technology telling Automotive News Europe, "In order to play among the big animals in automotive and to be anchored in the mind of customers you have to have offered something unique, to be first in market. We want to be one of the key premier automotive manufacturers."
Jaguar Land Rover's 50-million-pound contribution represents more than half of the 94-million-pound tab, on the so-called National Automotive Innovation Campus. Based at Warwick University, Tata's European Technical Center, Warwick Manufacturing Group and the Higher Education Funding Council, an agency of the British government, are all chipping in for the facility.
