Up for reluctant sale is a much warmed over and much beloved 1960 Series 2a resto-mod.

I was stationed in England from 2005-2009. While there I built, from the ground up, this 1960 Series 2a heavily based on a Defender.
It has a Defender galvanized frame and 200Tdi. Discovery transmission and transfercase (higher gear ratio for highway cruising). Range Rover differentials (10 spline) with Torsen diffs front and rear and cross-drilled discs all around.
The turbo was upgraded with a variable vane (Allard turbo sport) and it has a custom intercooler. All fuel, oil and p/s lines are steel braided with AN fittings and all radiator and intake hoses are silicon.
The exhaust is stainless steel Janspeed.
It has Corbeau seats, JL Audio 750w stereo with 3 8" subs, custom door panels, power windows, a custom Autometer gauge cluster, center arm rest with storage, slide-out storage drawer in back, two red-top Optima batteries and a 9000lb winch.
2" lift with 'cranked' trail arms, caster corrected radius arms, dislocation cones, remote reservoir TerraFirma shocks and Mach 5 rims with 265-75R16 BGF's (not the ones in the pictures).
Despite being on a 90 chassis, I went out of my way to make it look like a S2a. I deleted the rear fillers on the back body, galvanized the cappings, modified S2a door cappings to bolt to MOD Defender doors (2a-esque recessed handles), shortened a 109 hard top so it would fit both the 90 wheelbase but also the S2a split window winscreen. The windscreen is heated (no fog, no scraping ice). The heater is Defender.
The bulkhead is brand new from a TD5 but with the dashboard of a S2a welded to it. The seatbox is also brand new Defender.
The paint is British Racing Green metallic and the top is the correct off-white.
The list goes on and on. I spared little expense and paid very close attention to detail.
It was featured in the Land Rover International October 2005 issue. A full color 5 page write-up.

After bringing it to the states in 2009, it sat in storage in St. Louis until this past October. I drove it from MO to AL to NJ where I have it now. It performed flawlessly, easily goes 70+ mph and consistently gets 24mpg. Only 5000mi on the build.
It recently developed an oil leak at the turbo. I can't tell where it's coming from. Unfortunately, it has a small leak somewhere on the turbo. I've had the turbo off but can't for the life of me see where it's coming from. It's by no means serious, but the heat from the turbo burns it so it's kind of annoying. The leak started a couple weeks ago.
The clutch master cylinder should be rebuilt (have the kit) as it leaks a little. Works just fine though. Drove it to NJ like it is.

The build took 3 1/2 years and I have hundreds of pictures of all stages, a copy of the build diary I kept, and a lot of the receipts (paper and electronic).

I've obviously got a lot of blood, sweat and tears in this vehicle. However, I'm not so "emotionally attached" to it that I want stupid money for it. I do want to sell it.

The sale would include a VERY large collection of spare parts that I bought when I was in England. Radiator, water pump, clutch kit, gaskets, brakes, bearings, seals, swivel housings, CV joints, u-joints, alarm system, replacement glass for windscreen, doors and side glass, new door panels, 5 15" 'wagon wheel' rims, etc...

It was professionally appraised at $42,000.

Don't worry, I don't expect that much but would like to see offers in the $30,000 range.

Please feel free to ask any questions or see any detailed pictures. If you're in the South Jersey area, I invite you to come look for yourself and take it on a drive.

Thanks for looking!

Jaguar Land Rover to cut workforce by 2,000 in push toward electric future

Thu, Feb 18 2021

Jaguar Land Rover said on Wednesday it would cut 2,000 jobs from its global salaried workforce, just days after announcing its luxury Jaguar brand will be entirely electric by 2025 and e-models of its entire lineup will be launched by 2030. "The full review of the Jaguar Land Rover organization is already under way," the company said in an emailed statement. "We anticipate a net reduction of around 2,000 people from our global salaried workforce in the next financial year," it said. However, it added that the organizational review did not impact hourly paid, manufacturing employees. JLR, owned by India's Tata Motors, said earlier that its Land Rover brand will launch six fully electric models over the next five years, with the first in 2024. Known for its iconic, high-performance E-Type model in the 1960s and 1970s, Jaguar faces the same challenges as many other carmakers as it transitions to electric vehicles while trying to retain the feeling and power of a luxury combustion engine model. Last month, Tata Motors said it was concerned by semiconductor shortages and Brexit-related supply disruptions as its luxury car sales recover, although the Indian automaker added these had not yet hit production. Tata Motors posted three straight quarters of losses as the COVID-19 crisis dented sales, exacerbating uncertainties over Britain's exit from the European Union, weak demand and rising costs, but had bounced back to clock a profit in its third quarter to the end of December. The 2,000 reduction in JLR's non-factory jobs was reported earlier on Wednesday by Sky News.

2023 J.D. Power APEAL Study shows new-car customer satisfaction scores slip

Thu, Jul 20 2023

J.D. Power survey results have been slightly up but mostly down for automakers this year, literally. In February, the 2023 Vehicle Dependability Study showed an overall decline compared the 2022 a month before the Customer Service Index Study did the same. The trend reversed in June with a better overall score on the 2023 U.S. Electric Vehicle Consideration Study than in 2022, then declined again the same month on with a lower overall score on the 2023 Initial Quality Study. The declines continue with the 2023 J.D. Power U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, overall satisfaction among the 84,555 respondents down two points overall compared to 2022, to 845 out of 1,000 points. Because last year's score dropped compared to 2021, this year marks the first consecutive decline in the study's 28-year history. The study tries to "[measure] owners' emotional attachment and level of excitement with new vehicle" after 90 days of ownership by asking new owners to rate 37 attributes in 10 areas around the vehicle, such as the feeling they get when they hit the accelerator. Satisfaction with nine of the attributes is down this year versus last, fuel economy the only segment to show better results with 15 points more satisfaction. Styling and infotainment are big drags on satisfaction. Responses to new car exterior looks tallied 888 points, down from 894 last year, the largest drop in this year's study. On the digital side, less than half of those surveyed this year said they prefer using a manufacturer's built-in infotainment. From 70% of respondents in 2020 preferring to use a manufacturer's in-house software to play audio instead of Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, that's 56% in 2023. Going all-in on Google appears to have the best effect. J.D. Power said that vehicles with both Google's Android Automotive Operating System (AAOS) and Google Automotive Services (GAS) "score higher in the infotainment category than those with no AAOS whatsoever. AAOS without GAS receives the lowest scores for infotainment of the three categories."  Frank Hanley, senior director of auto benchmarking at J.D. Power, said, "Despite the technology and design innovations that manufacturers put into new vehicles, owners are lukewarm about them. While innovations like charging pads, vehicle apps and advanced audio features should enhance an owner’s experience, this is not the case when problems are experienced.

Rising aluminum costs cut into Ford's profit

Wed, Jan 24 2018

When Ford reports fourth-quarter results on Wednesday afternoon, it is expected to fret that rising metals costs have cut into profits, even as rivals say they have the problem under control. Aluminum prices have risen 20 percent in the last year and nearly 11 percent since Dec. 11. Steel prices have risen just over 9 percent in the last year. Ford uses more aluminum in its vehicles than its rivals. Aluminum is lighter but far more expensive than steel, closing at $2,229 per tonne on Tuesday. U.S. steel futures closed at $677 per ton (0.91 metric tonnes). Republican U.S. President Donald Trump's administration is weighing whether to impose tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, which could push prices even higher. Ford gave a disappointing earnings estimate for 2017 and 2018 last week, saying the higher costs for steel, aluminum and other metals, as well as currency volatility, could cost the company $1.6 billion in 2018. Ford shares took a dive after the announcement. Ford Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks told analysts at a conference in Detroit last week that while the company benefited from low commodity prices in 2016, rising steel prices were now the main cause of higher costs, followed by aluminum. Shanks said the automaker at times relies on foreign currencies as a "natural hedge" for some commodities but those are now going in the opposite direction, so they are not working. A Ford spokesman added that the automaker also uses a mix of contracts, hedges and indexed buying. Industry analysts point to the spike in aluminum versus steel prices as a plausible reason for Ford's problems, especially since it uses far more of the expensive metal than other major automakers. "When you look at Ford in the context of the other automakers, aluminum drives a lot of their volume and I think that is the cause" of their rising costs, said Jeff Schuster, senior vice president of forecasting at auto consultancy LMC Automotive. Other major automakers say rising commodity costs are not much of a problem. At last week's Detroit auto show, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV's Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne reiterated its earnings guidance for 2018 and held forth on a number of topics, but did not mention metals prices. General Motors Co gave a well-received profit outlook last week and did not mention the subject. "We view changes in raw material costs as something that is manageable," a GM spokesman said in an email.
