This is an auction for my 1987 Land Rover Defender 90. The VIN is correct and as ebay will not accept it I had to change the above information to a 1980. Again the VIN is correct and the Defender is a 1987. Along with the title, a heritage certificate will be supplied stating that the vehicle left the Lode Lane factory at Solihull on the 30th March 1987. Due to the vehicles age it is very easy to import into the US. I have no problem driving down to the border  where the new owner would simply fill out Customs Form 7501 and pay 2% duty. As the vehicle is over 25 years of age B.C. residents could register it as a collectors vehicle and benefit from much reduced insurance premiums. I imported this vehicle directly from the British Army in 2011 and after a complete rebuild I covered over 12,000 KMS without incident. Vehicle is currently inspected and registered in B.C. Canada.

ENGINE : 2495cc 12J 4 cylinder normally aspirated diesel. 65.5 bhp at 4000 RPM. 113 lbft of torque at 1800 RPM. 5 bearing crank. Perfect working order. Driven normally you can expect around 25 MPG. Vehicle has a top speed of 130 KPH but this is just an indication of gearing and much prefers to cruise around the 100 KPH mark. Fully overhauled 12,000 KMS ago. All seals, belts etc. Fully reconditioned injection pump and injectors. A later PVC system was also fitted. Block heater fitted. It also benefits from an oil cooler and a 16" Kenlowe electric fan. Straight through exhaust system. Vehicle will be supplied with new oil and filter.

CHASSIS : Original and perfect. Never welded or repaired. Bulkhead is also original and unrepaired. There has been two small repairs in the footwells.Photos will be provided upon request.

TRANSMISSION : LT77 5 speed manual. Permanent 4WD with manual diff lock and high/low ratio. Remote breathers on gearbox, transfer box and both axles. Free from any defects. No crunching or jumping out of gear.

BRAKES : Discs up front with drums on the rear. Perfect working order. Standard dual circuit, servo assisted.

STEERING : Light and precise. Original LHD manual box.

MILEAGE: Speedo is in KMS and shows 149875. For miles I multiplied this figure by 0.6214

BODYWORK : The aluminium alloy bodywork still has lots of dents or patina if you prefer. Please see photos. It is very straight. Bare metal respray in urethane, deep bronze green. The hard top/back door takes around half an hour to remove and around an hour to reinstall.

OTHER NEW PARTS : All new one piece door seals. New windscreen and seals. Halogen headlamps.

QUESTIONS : Heater is excellent in both cab heat and defrost. If vehicle goes to a cold climate I will supply a Land Rover radiator muff which improves things even more. I am happy to help with any collection or delivery instructions. Please note that this is an extremelt tough yet basic vehicle. No power steering, no ABS, no aircon. The windscreen is hinged and folds down if you require more air. The doors are also quickly removed. It is a very simple vehicle and consequently very easy to maintain. Parts are inexpensive and readily available. I use paddockspares in the UK. If you are new to ebay or have less than 10 feedbacks please contact me before bidding. Please no requests for trades. This is an exeptional vehicle and the reserve is set accordingly. Ebay will let you know when and if the reserve has been met. Any inspectiond or test drives welcome. You can see and hear the vehicle running by visiting youtube and searching for "1987  military Defender 90 2.5 diesel LHD." If I have failed to answer any of your questions please do not hesitate to contact me. Vehicle is located at V1E 0B2, Salmon Arm, B.C. Canada. Thanks, Steven.

Is Jaguar's 3 Series-fighter the brand's last chance?

Wed, 16 Oct 2013

The upcoming line of compact 3 Series-fighters from Jaguar, often referred to as the Jaguar XS, could consist of a sedan, wagon and possibly a coupe and GT model (think BMW 5 Series GT). The car's all-aluminum architecture also will provide the basis for two new sports utility vehicles. Just how important is the much-touted "baby Jag" project to parent company Jaguar Land Rover? A JLR executive reportedly says the brand's survival is directly linked to the success of the XS, codenamed X760, Autocar reports.
The brand's survival is directly linked to the success of the XS.
"If the X760 fails, it will probably be the end for the [Jaguar] brand," the executive says. But Adrian Hallmark, Jaguar's global brand director, claims Jaguar will "build the most advanced, most efficient, most refined car in that [compact luxury sedan] segment. Not almost as good as, but better than the best in the world."

Recharge Wrap-up: Jaguar Land Rover talks EVs, Batteries should be modular

Wed, Sep 3 2014

A new study out of Germany suggests adopting a modular approach to battery offerings in plug-in hybrid and extended range electric vehicles. Automakers could offer the same car with different battery sizes (and different costs, accordingly) to drivers depending on their driving ranges. This would optimize the total cost of ownership for various drivers better than the current approach. Developing a modular battery design and offering appropriate batteries for different customers "is the key for electric powertrains to meet customer expectations and become cost competitive against conventional technologies," according to the report from the Institute of Vehicle Concepts, German Aerospace Center. Learn more at Green Car Congress. Jaguar and Land Rover are looking to offer more electric driving from their vehicles. Wolfgang Ziebart, head of product development for Jaguar Land Rover, said in an interview that its hybrid system is being tweaked for more electric power and "downsized" combustion. He also said the likely target market for EVs would be second and third vehicles, rather than primary vehicles for urban driving. Within that market, Europeans look for something smaller, while American drivers lean toward larger luxury vehicles for their second car. Ziebart uses the Tesla Model S as an example of American tastes, and compares its size to that of the Jaguar XJ. Read more at Automotive News Europe. Thailand will likely approve a Volkswagen factory as early as next week. A German newspaper suggests that Thailand's Board of Investment is set to greenlight the plant, which is planned for a site near the Port of Bangkok. Thailand is a relatively large and growing auto manufacturing country, which seeks to be a major producer of eco-friendly vehicles. The country's "Eco2" program would provide incentives to Volkswagen if it builds clean cars and meets certain production targets. Read more at Reuters. Formula E has chosen Sky Deutschland for broadcasting rights in the German market. The deal includes television rights, as well as online broadcasting. Sky Deutschland has 3.8 million subscribers in Germany and Austria. Showing the races on Germany's largest pay television provider should help generate interest for the series, particularly the Berlin ePrix - the inaugural season's penultimate race - scheduled for May 30, 2015. Who picks car colors and materials? Designers like Hannah Custance

Tue, Dec 21 2021

As automotive journalists, we're often asked "how did you get that job?" People usually didn't even know you could do such a thing. In this 7 Questions series, we're highlighting other jobs in the automotive industry that you might not have heard about before. What do they do, how'd they get to do it and other questions about their particular corner of the car world. Slowly but surely, the automotive landscape is becoming more colorful. Look beyond the unrelentingly conservative palette of white, black and gray most buyers opt for and you'll see the increased use of exterior trim types beyond the usual chrome. There's gloss black, of course, but also other metallic finishes like gold or copper. Those can be found inside, too, where there's also an increase in colorful leathers and trims, innovative fabrics, new wood types and finishes, and greater creativity in general. So where is this change coming from? The answer is designers like Hannah Custance, the color and materials design manager for Jaguar Land Rover. Her team's latest effort is also its magnum opus, the 2022 Range Rover. Although saddled with the expectations that comes with one of the automotive industry's classic nameplates, the all-new Range Rover is also a celebration of cutting edge manufacturing and fashion-forward materials selection. We sat down with Hannah at the L.A. Auto Show to find out more about color and materials designers, how she ended up in the industry, and advice she might have for young designers out there. It has been condensed for brevity. Autoblog: What does a color and materials design manager to do?Hannah Custance: I basically look after a team of designers who design finishes for every A surface on the car. So, that could be exterior finishes. It could be interior trim materials, soft materials, hard materials, chromes, metals, woods, ceramic – that's one of the new ones – anything you can kind of touch and see is color material design. Autoblog: How early in the design process does your team become involved.Hannah: Right at the very start. In fact, we look at materials that don't have a product assigned to them or a car assigned to them. So, it takes actually a very long time for us to get materials approved and fully validated. We have to find suppliers that are willing to work in automotive and our test standards are incredibly high, some of the highest in the industry.
