Jaguar Land Rover exploring 3D HUD and infotainment projections
Wed, Aug 21 2019With its most recent technology research, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is exploring the use of 3D projections for a world before and/or after autonomous vehicles come to fruition. In collaboration with the United Kingdom's University of Cambridge, JLR has developed concepts for a 3D head-up display that shows information on the road ahead and a system that projects personalized 3D infotainment for vehicle passengers. As of right now, hundreds of production vehicles are equipped with two-dimensional head-up displays, some color, others black and white. Using various techniques and different technologies, manufacturers display information in a flat image in front of a driver. Some might find it distracting or unhelpful to have this in the driver's line of sight, and JLR might have found a solution. Rather than wedge the information in between the person and the view ahead, a 3D system that uses augmented reality could display the info onto the road in front of the driver. JLR thinks the system could project navigation directions, safety alerts such as lane departure, hazard detection or other bits typically found in a car's infotainment or instrument cluster. Some might find this to be even more distracting that 2D head-up displays, but to each his or her own. While the 3D head-up display is something that could be used right now, if it were released and passed legal, part two of JLR's 3D technology research is imagined for a life where truly autonomous vehicles are skating across the country. Using head- and eye-tracking technology, the system could lock into the position of numerous people in a vehicle and give each of them a personalized 3D projection "screen." This could be used to track a trip, look up points of interest, or even watch movies. JLR points out this could be used during ride-sharing without bothering others in the vehicle. The work with the Center for Advanced Photonics and Electronics at Cambridge is still in development for now, but it's only a matter of time before 3D tech makes it into cars in some degree.
Jaguar reportedly prepping fully electric F-Pace
Thu, Feb 19 2015Tesla might want to take a look over its shoulder because there could be a cat catching its Model X in a few years. Jaguar reportedly has a fully electric vehicle under development that is possibly based on the upcoming F-Pace crossover, and it could be on sale in Europe as soon as 2018. Autocar cites anonymous "well-placed industry sources" as the foundation for the rumor and believes that Jag's future CUV would be the most likely recipient of the new powertrain. The battery electric technology would reportedly be shared with the brand's partners at Land Rover to keep costs down, and a range of around 300 miles would be the target. The F-Pace is reportedly already being prepped with a number of drivetrain options. JLR's latest 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and supercharged 3.0-liter V6 are likely choices. However, a hybrid version is rumored, as well. JLR has been taking baby steps towards electrification for quite some time. Perhaps the biggest example was the introduction of the Range Rover Hybrid, but Land Rover has also been rumored to have an EV version of its flagship SUV under development too. The company already tested several electric Defenders, as well. From Jaguar's camp, the automaker recently trademarked the EV-Type name in the US and Europe, and its C-X75 concept had a very interesting hybrid system. The reason for all of this EV development from the Brit brands is to adhere to constricting emissions rules around the world, according to Autocar. The EU is moving to real world testing possibly as soon as 2017, and US regulators continue to work towards cleaning up the cars here, too. 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class vs big luxury off-roaders: How they compare on paper
Mon, May 7 2018During our first drive of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, the all-new SUV's product manager was asked to identify competitors that might have been benchmarked in its development. The look on his face was about the same as if someone had asked him to recite King Lear in Klingon. As far as Andreas Hoeppel was concerned, the G 550 and AMG G 63 doesn't actually have a rival, or at least something the engineers and designers thought to compare it against. The G-Class is a G-Class, who cares what the other guys are doing? Well, in case you care, we figured we'd plug the new G-Class' specs into the old Autoblog Comparo Generator 3000 (TM) to see how the G 550 and AMG G 63 compare to the Range Rover and its mightiest SVAutobiography Dynamic model, plus the Lexus LX 570 and Bentley Bentayga V8. Frankly, Heir Hoeppel was onto something as each of these is wildly different. But, they do share some common elements: giant size and weight, ultra-lux interiors, and far more off-roading capability than other luxury SUVs offer and any of its owners are likely to ever utilize. Sad. So enjoy this trip down specification lane, and if you're still left hungry, you can always check out our Range Rover comparison or create your very own comparo. Off-Road Clearances and Capability All the fancy off-roading software and special cameras in the world won't do you a lick of good if your SUV is too close to the ground or has low-hanging body work that'll get easily ripped off. As such, check out each of these uber-SUV's ground clearance, approach and departure angles, and wading/fording depths. In this case, the Range Rover has an advantage due to its air suspension that can raise itself into an Off-Roading height that's a whopping 2 inches higher than the new G-Wagen. Sadly for itself, Lexus only provides figures for its air suspension when in normal height. It could match or surpass the Range Rover for all we know (but doubt it). As Land Rover does provide figures for the Range Rover's approach and departure angles in normal and Off-Road height, you can get an idea of just how much clearance the new G-Wagen has without any fancy (and expensive to fix) raising and lowering air suspension hardware. In fact, its departure angle is better than even the Range Rover's Off-Road height. Bentley doesn't provide any such information despite touting the Bentayga's surprising off-roading talents.
