2003 Land Rover Discovery S Needs Engine Rebuilt on 2040-cars
Baldwin, Michigan, United States
Up for sale is my 2003 Disco 2.. It is your basic "S" trim, Clean. Everything works to my knowledge, minus the engine which is removed and included. Does not have sunroofs, but could be easily installed (they use the same as a Disco 1). I bought it with an unknown engine problem as a project. Myself and a knowledgable mechanic removed the engine to find that it had suffered from the fatal "oil starvation" disease, common for the 2003-2004 Disco's due to a bad sensor. Time went by and I lost intrest in it. Engine is removed and related components are boxed up, ready for pickup. Engine is partially assembled for transporting. Has not been driven in the last year, so will need an overall inspection (brakes etc) once engine is replaced. Has a slight lift, thanks to old man emu shocks (sorry, I dont know the exact height). Body is in good shape for a 10 year old vehicle. What rust is on the undercarriage is not that bad for a 10 year old Michigan vehicle, and not very flaky. I sprayed it with a rust killing paint when I first bought it last year, but could use a wire brush and some undercoating. The window bar on the rear passengers side door has rusted, but can be easily replaced. To my knowledge, all that is needed (not counting an engine rebuild) is a rear window wiper, and two small plastic pieces that allow the fuel door to latch. The plastic license plate bracket is broken also, but not a major issue. This thing will make an awesome off-roader once finished (this is not my first Discovery). Shop Manual on CD and several new engine parts (gaskets and bearings) also included. Please ask any questions you may have and let me know if there is anything I can help with. My number is 231-878-0233, please leave a message and I will contact you as soon as I can. Thank You! |

The UK votes for Brexit and it will impact automakers
Fri, Jun 24 2016It's the first morning after the United Kingdom voted for what's become known as Brexit – that is, to leave the European Union and its tariff-free internal market. Now begins a two-year process in which the UK will have to negotiate with the rest of the EU trading bloc, which is its largest export market, about many things. One of them may be tariffs, and that could severely impact any automaker that builds cars in the UK. This doesn't just mean companies that you think of as British, like Mini and Jaguar. Both of those automakers are owned by foreign companies, incidentally. Mini and Rolls-Royce are owned by BMW, Jaguar and Land Rover by Tata Motors of India, and Bentley by the VW Group. Many other automakers produce cars in the UK for sale within that country and also export to the EU. Tariffs could damage the profits of each of these companies, and perhaps cause them to shift manufacturing out of the UK, significantly damaging the country's resurgent manufacturing industry. Autonews Europe dug up some interesting numbers on that last point. Nissan, the country's second-largest auto producer, builds 475k or so cars in the UK but the vast majority are sent abroad. Toyota built 190k cars last year in Britain, of which 75 percent went to the EU and just 10 percent were sold in the country. Investors are skittish at the news. The value of the pound sterling has plummeted by 8 percent as of this writing, at one point yesterday reaching levels not seen since 1985. Shares at Tata Motors, which counts Jaguar and Land Rover as bright jewels in its portfolio, were off by nearly 12 percent according to Autonews Europe. So what happens next? No one's terribly sure, although the feeling seems to be that the jilted EU will impost tariffs of up to 10 percent on UK exports. It's likely that the UK will reciprocate, and thus it'll be more expensive to buy a European-made car in the UK. Both situations will likely negatively affect the country, as both production of new cars and sales to UK consumers will both fall. Evercore Automotive Research figures the combined damage will be roughly $9b in lost profits to automakers, and an as-of-yet unquantified impact on auto production jobs. Perhaps the EU's leaders in Brussels will be in a better mood in two years, and the process won't devolve into a trade war. In the immediate wake of the Brexit vote, though, the mood is grim, the EU leadership is angry, and investors are spooked.
Jaguar Land Rover mulling factory in Georgia?
Sat, Feb 7 2015London's Sunday Times reported last October that Jaguar-Land Rover was sniffing around The South looking for a potential manufacturing site, and was "talking to several southern states." We imagine Georgia was one of them; The Peach State has Kia Motors Manufacturing in West Point, it claims Porsche HQ as a resident, and soon the Mercedes-Benz regional office, too. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has said that Governor Nathan Deal recently took the initiative to fly to the UK to "make prospect calls" with JLR executives about a deal. We don't have any details about the calls, but we'll guess that they involved Deal making a financial case for GA over other states while sipping a cup of tea. It's said that the English luxury maker wants to build a factory here with a 200,000-unit capacity, to take advantage of the same financial efficiencies that have planted other automakers in the US and Mexico; it opened a facility in China last year to build the Range Rover Evoque, Land Rover Discovery Sport, and the Jaguar XE, and is casting eyes over Brazilian and Saudi Arabian soil for other facilities. No timetable has been given for a decision.
