1999 Land Rover Discovery Ii on 2040-cars
NOTE: Car is not in SEATTLE, it's in West Richland WA. I recently purchased this truck from the original owner in Seattle. Car was advertised as needing head gaskets. I have replaced the head gaskets with Victor set, heads were tested free of cracks and resurfaced. I chose not to do valve job because the machine shop said with the miles that were on the car I shouldn't need it... I think that was a bad Idea in retrospect. PO told me that at 60K the head gaskets went bad and the shop asked them if they'd like to just have them install a new short block at the time and they did, though I can't prove that and the dumb-butt previous owners can't find their records because of divorce chaos, I don't have any reason to doubt them and the high compression indicates this is true.Currently car is running very nicely, good power and crisp throttle response, no overheating. When I filled the coolant system after HG's I did put some liquid glass tablets in the system as preventative maintanence as many auto manufactures do with brand new cars. Car does not have the SAI (secondary air injection) which makes it quite a bit simpler and less to go wrong. All electrical components work fine except rear sunroof, heater system is perfect and the AC blows cold, tires are 70%, stops fine with a bit of squeek from the front brakes (rotors worn) rear fine rotors good, ACE system good, ABS fine no lights, traction control and 4x4 good (see pic), exhaust good. Car has no rust visible anywhere, under carriage clean, steering tight and smooth, transmission shifts perfectly, shocks good, no windshield cracks. Exterior paint very nice, one scratch on drivers door (see pic), one quarter sized ding in door. Interior very nice, color camel leather, no cracks or damage, seats show some fading is all, fix with proper dye and leather treatment, floor mat worn drivers side, original took kit, jack etc present... car runs and drives NICE. I have replaced two o2 sensors with generic sensors chasing the codes, and think that was also a bad idea, seems these things like OEM and that's it. Also replaced one rattling cat converter, flushed power steering, new plugs and "Kingsborne" wires, air filter, oil change. Note photo, of testing the car for combustion chamber leaks and cracked block/ slipped liner problem, results negative for any problems (BLUE). Car is throwing some codes, PO447 (evap open, usually a fuel cap) PO102 (mass air flow sensor) PO112 (Intake air temp sensor) P1884 (?) and misfire cyl 5 and multiple random misfires (don't have the codes handy). The o2 sensors fixed the rich condition and no signal from o2 sensor codes. Far as the codes go I don't have the time (or patience mostly) to get into this, first step would probably be to do vacuum test (haven't yet) and or Air flow sensor, maybe coil pack. IT"S POSSIBLE that the car needs a valve job in light of the compression readings. This amounts to full disclosure on the truck, should be a good reliable runner with codes fixes but the usual caveats apply here as this is a land rover after all ;-) Tomorrow will take pics of the interior. Compression is 180 178 150 150 (left bank) 180 170 160 150 (right bank). Car should be fine for pick up and trip home, I have put about 500 trouble free miles on this since the head gasket fix. This Ford F-150 might have a Land Rover turbodiesel V6
Thu, Dec 17 2015Our spy photographers just caught this Ford F-150 driving around Dearborn, wearing camouflage around the bed – not so unusual near Ford's headquarters. What's interesting with this particular mule is that it might be packing a Jaguar-Land Rover turbodiesel V6. As with the Super Duty, the F-150 prototype pictured here sports a Venturi exhaust tip popping out the side of the rear bumper behind the wheel, which – along with the sound reported by our shutterbug – suggests that it's burning oil up front. That could mean Ford has found another application for the 3.2-liter, five-cylinder Power Stroke diesel that it just federalized for the Transit van. However our sources suggest what the mule is actually powered by the 3.0-liter Lion V6 diesel that Jaguar Land Rover – once subsidiaries in Ford's Premier Automotive Group – is bringing over for the Td6 models of the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. The engine produces a respectable 254 horsepower and a healthy 443 pound-feet of torque, and is tipped to be mated to the same ten-speed automatic transmission as the new Raptor. That could give the F-150 the kind of fuel economy and muscle it would need to challenge the likes of the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel and the heavier-duty Nissan Titan with the Cummins engine. With gas prices as low as they are, however, and sales of diesel-powered vehicles lagging, Ford could just be trying to keep up with the competition by offering a light-duty diesel pickup. With its lightweight aluminum body, the diesel F-150 could even surpass the Duramax diesel-powered Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon for frugality at the pumps, according to Mark Williams of PickupTrucks.com. He told Autoblog that, "it makes perfect sense for Ford to do a diesel. It seems like everyone is pushing them to do a Ranger, but if they can get the F-150 to push 30 mpg it can challenge the Ram Ecodiesel and even the Colorado Duramax." Reached for comment, Ford spokesman Mike Levine sent us the following statement: "We do not speculate about future products. While diesel is a solution, it is not the solution. EcoBoost offers the ideal combination of performance and fuel economy that over 60 percent of F-150 customers are choosing." Jaguar Land Rover signs manufacturing contract with Magna Steyr
Thu, Jul 2 2015Jaguar Land Rover is in the midst of implementing big plans. Those include a raft of new models, and a series of new manufacturing facilities to build them. It seems, however, that the former is outpacing the latter, as the British automaker has just announced a new manufacturing contract to have some of its vehicles built off-site. The latest deal is with Magna Steyr, the contract manufacturer based in Graz, Austria. That could see a Land Rover produced at the same facility that has handled the Mercedes G-Class since 1979, or a Jaguar at the same place that assembled the Aston Martin Rapide until 2012 when production was moved back to the UK. The big question at this point is just what JLR will choose to have Magna build on its behalf. The British automaker isn't saying at this point, but a spokesman confirmed to Autoblog that it will be a future product – not an existing line moved from its current production site to the contract manufacturer, as Mercedes recently did with the R-Class. A timeline wasn't announced at this early stage, either, but we're told it will take about 24 months before new Jaguars or Land Rovers start rolling out of the plant in Austria. Just what those new vehicles will be remains to be seen, but Jaguar Land Rover has a number of new products on their way. It is expected to reveal in the near future a new Defender, a replacement for the current LR4/Discovery, the new Evoque convertible, a new XJ flagship sedan, and possibly a new coupe and convertible to take the place of the old XK. We'll soon see the new Jaguar F-Pace, which may be followed by additional crossovers as well. The company also recently introduced the new XE, XF, and Discovery Sport models, though given the timeframes, they'll almost certainly be produced at JLR's existing facilities. It recently opened its first overseas plant in China, has another one under construction in Brazil, and is also said to be considering a plant in North America on either side of the US-Mexican border. Jaguar Land Rover calling in 100k vehicles in three separate campaigns
Sun, Feb 8 2015Jaguar Land Rover is recalling an estimated 104,114 vehicles in three separate campaigns in cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The largest of them affects Range Rovers made between April 15, 2005, and September 4, 2012, covering 74,648 units in America from the 2006 to 2012 model years. In those affected vehicles, the front brake hose could rupture, leaking brake fluid and decreasing the capability of the brakes to, you know... stop the vehicle. In a similar but separate recall, subsequent Range Rovers from the 2013 and 2014 model years (manufactured between August 16, 2012, and January 8, 2014) are also being recalled for a brake issue – this time due to the incorrect routing of the brake vacuum hose. The issue could wear down the hose and disable the power assist, again impeding the brakes from properly functioning. This second recall also affects the 2014 Range Rover Sport (specifically those manufactured between May 7, 2013, and January 8, 2014), affecting 24,679 units between both models across the United States. A third smaller recall concerns the 2012-2015 Jaguar XK – namely those built between March 4, 2011, and March 20, 2014. This campaign involves the front side parking lamps, which might switch off after about five minutes, in contravention of federal standards. As such, an estimated 4,787 units are being called in. In all three cases, owners of the affected vehicles can expect to hear from their local dealer to arrange to bring in their wayward British luxury vehicles to have the relevant issue fixed. REMEDY: Land Rover will notify owners, and dealers will replace the left and right front brake hoses, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin March 13, 2015.
