Build Concept & Operation:

This truck is a BLAST to drive.  If you have never experienced a 4.6L converted Rover before, it is something that all enthusiasts lust after.  Here’s why: unbeatable performance, fuel efficiency, and total bragging rights.  This LSE was already awesome.  …and then I had a 4.6L hanging around that needed the right truck and this one was it!  Here’s why:  The LSE editions were the flagship of the Rover line in 1998.  They came with all the aesthetic refinement available at the time.  Their Range Rover brethren however were offered the additional option of amazing power.  This is the fusion of both ideals.  All that power of the HSE P38 as the heart of this already amazing Disco.  I LOVE that this thing is a Luxury truck, with a monster engine making it a total performance sleeper.  To me, it echoes the ideology of the Jaguar XJ V12’s.  Total refinement and peerless aggression once the gas is hit!

Fire this thing up and you have the steady pulse of a healthy V8 with no ticks, knocks, stumbles or hesitation of ANY kind.  Drop it into drive, hit the gas and you are GONE.  Punch it getting onto the freeway and the true nature of this thing reveals itself.  You launch onto the freeway before you can even say “Help me Lucas!”  With this 4.6L serviced as it has been, you easily cruise at 85mph at 2600rpm.  The 4.0L motor produces 80mph at around 3000rpm.  So what does this mean?  The motor works less, to give you more, opening up a powerband unavailable with the 4.0L.

She cruises straight and true with no wanderings of any kind.  Take a long looping freeway interchange at speed and the suspension is plush and assertive, giving you a feeling of total control and comfort.

All switches and controls work great; windows, doors, sunroofs too.

The AC has been overhauled and cools the cabin down quickly and the heat blasts nicely on cold toes after a morning surf.

There are no check engine lights or any illuminated warnings on the dash.

Body, Chassis & Coachwork:

This thing looks as good as it ever has.  The Lightstone Leather interior is as soft and clean as you’d hope it to be with any wear resembling the perfect fit of your favorite baseball glove.  All woodwork is dark, and the rugs and mats are clean, with the pile still factory plush with all “Discovery” branding clean and legible.  The headliner is brand new and with the full-service professional detail, she smells like a new car.  It has always been a non smoker vehicle and it gives you a sense of factory freshness that would be lost otherwise.  The jump-seats make it an available 7 seater and as typical with most SoCal trucks, they were fitted as an accessory only and were clearly never used.  They are in excellent shape.

The paint is in great condition, shines up beautifully as pictured, but like most older Californian’s who have spent a life in the sun, it has its share of surface blemishes and marks that I would consider otherwise acceptable for the vintage.  All paint-matched accents are in great condition and the chrome bumpers shine perfect with no pitting or blemishes.

That said, the vehicle is another wonderful rust-free California example with all jambs, hinges, seams, pans, bulkheads, welds, arches, etc in as pristine condition as you’re gonna find.

One of the nicest things about the 50th Anniversary LSE’s were the optional “Boost” wheels – offered only on NAS Defenders of the same vintage.  These wheels are HIGHLY sought after and perfect sets of 5 (such as these) still sell for over $1000!  Additionally, these were the ONLY wheels made for Land Rover outside of England.  They were crafted in Italy in limited quantity for these special editions ONLY.

Purchasing, Perspective & Why Buy From Me:

No one puts a Land Rover together better than me, PERIOD.  It’s the vehicle I drive, and the vehicle I RACE.  Nearly two decades of Rover ownership and service are poured into every truck that I see into new hands.  I know your concerns.  I know your passion.  They are mine, too.

All too common are sales from the brokerage houses where a vehicle will receive a detail service and nothing else.  Leaving maintenance work for the pleasure of the new owner; often time’s immediately following reception of the vehicle.  Beware of any truck that does not share the same service points as the ones I advertise with my trucks.  They are ESSENTIAL for long term reliability and any Rover without these services are ticking time bombs.  I am not a Land Rover tech that drives home in a Honda Civic.  I come from a long line of British Car technicians and Live, Breathe and even RACE the green oval.  I understand ALL of your concerns and needs and do my best to ensure that you will be happy based on a simple, yet powerful concept:  DOES THIS VEHICLE MAKE ME HAPPY?  WOULD I PUT MY WIFE AND BABY IN IT? WOULD I LOVE TO HAVE IT?  The answer is always yes.  And that’s when I know they are ready.  I care.  I know you do, too.  More and more these days copy-cats of mine pop up prompting customers to ask about various “cars I have for sale.”  If you don’t see one for sale from me… its… well… not me!

Vehicles that I see off not only have domestic endpoints, they go to the farthest reaches of the planet.  They have gone to Europe, Asia, The South Pacific, Central America and currently, a client recently purchased a trail-ready 88 RRC and is en route to Tierra Del Fuego after I picked him up in the vehicle at LAX when he flew in to receive it!  The point here is, I believe in each and every vehicle that I usher in to new ownership.  Please see my recent vehicle sales and I’m sure you’ll be impressed.

While these vehicles are all totally looked after, they are not immune cosmetic needs or to future service needs and flaws.  They are used vehicles and normal flaws and wear should be expected as the vast majority of them are pushing 20+ years old.  I invite you to ask ANY AND ALL QUESTIONS NOW!  There are no queries too obscure; your satisfaction is the goal here.  Additionally, eBay offers a 3rd party inspection service to verify ALL of your acquisition needs IN PERSON.  Purchase of the vehicle = SATISFACTION.  Once this auction is over, the winning bid and purchase imply that satisfaction has been achieved and will be understood as such.  There are no warranties offered here, but that said, there is always an unspoken “hand-shake” warranty meaning that should something fail within a reasonable amount of time – say a hose, a coilpack, a distributor, blower motors, an alternator, a switch, fuel pump, etc – I will be happy to send you what I have available at that time.

This is a NO RESERVE AUCTION so you are bidding to win!  Please make sure that you bid ONLY what you are prepared to pay.  This means, when the auction is over, and the winning bid is placed, this becomes THE SALE PRICE of the vehicle.  Under no circumstances does it open the door to negotiate or back out of your commitment.  The people bidding for this vehicle actually want it.  Do not spoil their chances at ownership by arm-chair bidding.  Yes, everyone joins eBay at some point, and there is no prejudice against lower transaction numbers here – HOWEVER – if I suspect and/or become aware of any insincerity on the part of said bidder, I reserve the right to cancel all bids from and block that insincere bidder from this auction.

Completion of this transaction is fairly straight forward.  Once the auction is over, I will be contacting the winner immediately and we can discuss the easiest way to finalize the transition.

Finally, people always ask me who I think a particular vehicle is for.  I’ve gotta be honest.  Part of me sees this stunning White-Gold LSE displayed proudly on the driveway as a daily commuter or a summer guest vehicle.  HOWEVER, the other half of me sees this thing lifted, locked, re-geared and climbing the impossible verticals of the Red Slick Rock in Moab, Utah.  Blue sky, Red Rock, and this trucks White-Gold finish??? Yee-freakin-haw!!! This truck has potential for so many…  Its clean, functional, reliable, gorgeous and plainly KICKS ASS...  The 98’s were distinctive all the way.  And if you are looking for LSE’S  only, then no doubt you have a specific need.  Whatever it may be, this vehicle is up to the task and will make its new owner proud.  Summer time is coming – and this vehicle is ready to be an essential component to your itinerary… whatever and wherever that may be!  Best of luck and Happy Rovering! Jaguar Land Rover may buy Silverstone racetrack for new HQ

Thu, Dec 3 2015

Jaguar Land Rover might add another chapter to its venerable motorsports legacy by purchasing the revered UK racetrack Silverstone to use as its new company headquarters. JLR could reportedly offer 22.7 million pounds ($34.1 million at current rates) to buy the circuit, according to Automotive News Europe, which cites several British media sources. The British automaker would then invest the equivalent of $78 million to turn the historic track into a celebration of the brand, including a museum, experience center, and hotel. The company would also construct space for its marketing team and engineers, Automotive News Europe reports. Motorsports would still continue there, too, which means the course's Formula One legacy is safe. Neither JLR nor the British Racing Drivers' Club, which leases the track, have confirmed the rumors. The BRDC only suggested that it received several confidential offers to purchase the circuit. Silverstone has a motorsports history that goes back to the late 1940s and is often the home to the Formula One British Grand Prix. The track's organizers have a long-term deal to continue hosting the F1 race, too. Today, the course also features major events from MotoGP and the FIA World Endurance Championship. In November, Jaguar released a video that celebrated some of its legacy at Silverstone by bringing the modern XJR and Le Mans-winning XJ-R9 LM at the track. If the company's purchase happens, you can expect to see a lot more Jags and probably some Land Rovers lapping the course. Related Video:

A car writer's year in new vehicles [w/video]

Thu, Dec 18 2014

Christmas is only a week away. The New Year is just around the corner. As 2014 draws to a close, I'm not the only one taking stock of the year that's we're almost shut of. Depending on who you are or what you do, the end of the year can bring to mind tax bills, school semesters or scheduling dental appointments. For me, for the last eight or nine years, at least a small part of this transitory time is occupied with recalling the cars I've driven over the preceding 12 months. Since I started writing about and reviewing cars in 2006, I've done an uneven job of tracking every vehicle I've been in, each year. Last year I made a resolution to be better about it, and the result is a spreadsheet with model names, dates, notes and some basic facts and figures. Armed with this basic data and a yen for year-end stories, I figured it would be interesting to parse the figures and quantify my year in cars in a way I'd never done before. The results are, well, they're a little bizarre, honestly. And I think they'll affect how I approach this gig in 2015. {C} My tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015 it'll be as high as 73. Let me give you a tiny bit of background about how automotive journalists typically get cars to test. There are basically two pools of vehicles I drive on a regular basis: media fleet vehicles and those available on "first drive" programs. The latter group is pretty self-explanatory. Journalists are gathered in one location (sometimes local, sometimes far-flung) with a new model(s), there's usually a day of driving, then we report back to you with our impressions. Media fleet vehicles are different. These are distributed to publications and individual journalists far and wide, and the test period goes from a few days to a week or more. Whereas first drives almost always result in a piece of review content, fleet loans only sometimes do. Other times they serve to give context about brands, segments, technology and the like, to editors and writers. So, adding up the loans I've had out of the press fleet and things I've driven at events, my tally for the year is 68 cars, as of this writing. Before the calendar flips to 2015, it'll be as high as 73. At one of the buff books like Car and Driver or Motor Trend, reviewers might rotate through five cars a week, or more. I know that number sounds high, but as best I can tell, it's pretty average for the full-time professionals in this business.

Your guide to vehicle subscription services

Mon, Oct 1 2018

They might be extremely limited in scope because of location availability, but vehicle subscription services are a growing trend that most luxury manufacturers are jumping on. Plans are expensive, but you're paying for much more than just the car typically. We highlighted four of the larger plans with a few more listed at the end. Care by Volvo Volvo launched its subscription service last year with its brand-new XC40. It was the only vehicle available for a time, but subscribers can now get an S60 sedan as well. Subscriptions are for two years, with the monthly price including insurance, a concierge service, wear-and-tear item replacements and all maintenance. You'll be able to drive 15,000 miles per year with whichever Volvo you choose, and although there are no options to extend that mileage, you can swap cars after a year. Pricing for the XC40 is $650 per month in base trim, while an S60 can be as expensive as $850 for the R-Design. Volvo's plan is to offer more cars soon through the service, but it's relatively limited compared to others right now. Porsche Passport Porsche has two levels in its subscription service: Launch and Accelerate. Launch will cost $2,000 per month and give you access to the Cayman, Boxster, Macan and Cayenne. All of those but the Cayenne can be had in "S" trim as well. Accelerate is where the fun really starts. For $3,000 per month you can choose from a fleet of 911s, including the S, 4S, Cabriolet and Cabriolet S. If those aren't enough, you can also get the Panamera 4S, Macan GTS and Cayenne S. There are no mileage limits and you can change vehicles as often as you'd like. Also included in the price is insurance, repairs, detailing and any maintenance. It might be extremely expensive and limited to Atlanta only, but this subscription service is second-to-none for what you get. Audi Select Audi just launched its subscription car service, and it's offered in one version for a flat fee of $1,395 per month. For that you'll have access to five different cars including the A4, S5 Coupe, A5 Cabriolet, Q5, and Q7. Not a bad range of vehicles, but it would've been neat to see the recently updated A7 in there too. Maybe in time. Like the others, insurance and maintenance are wrapped up in the price. Audi is allowing for unlimited miles and two car swaps per month here. In addition to that, you'll get two days of free rentals through Audi's Silvercar rental agency should you go on a trip.
