Up for auction is a very nice 1986 RARE ORIGINAL LEFT HAND DRIVE Diesel Land Drover Defender 90.  This particular expedition ready example is in very nice condition without any of the rust problems commonly found on the Land Rover Defenders. The bulkhead, floors and frame are all in excellent condition. The economical 2.5 N/A Diesel engine starts great and with the 5spd manual transmission, drives very nicely. The clutch has just been replaced within the last 1000 miles by the local Land Rover shop in Fort Worth Texas. The interior has been up fitted with the excellent Exmoor trimmed seats, head liner and rear overhead storage. In the back area, custom fitted removable aluminum lockable storage bins have been added to securely store any valuable items you may have with you.

On the exterior, no expense was spared in preparing this vehicle for expedition readiness.  Quality stainless steel Land Armour roof rack, ladder and front bumper have been added. Security cages have been fitted around the rear windows, a high quality Mantec rear tire carrier is mounted which also holds a high lift jack.  Solid steel rocker protectors are found on both sides as well as a snorkel for high water crossings or dusty dessert air..  Lightweight aluminum wheels have been fitted with excellent BFG all terrain tires that have approximately 90% tread remaining.  Included in the sale is a brand new, never installed canvas soft top and all necessary hardware to mount it.

This little Land Rover is an absolute pleasure to drive. The suspension is solid yet supple and everything works as it should. Being an old land rover, it does drip a minor amount of oil from time to time. It is over 25 years old and may have some minor imperfections and is thus being sold as is. I encourage any who are seriously interested to come and have a look in person.

Note - There is excellent air circulation via the vents and windows, however it does not have air conditioning.  The vehicle steers easily, however it does not have power steering.

Jaguar Land Rover develops 'transparent' A-pillar and ghost car [w/video]

Mon, Dec 15 2014

Jaguar and Land Rover are known for making highly covetable luxury, performance and off-road vehicles, but the British automakers are on a bit of a technology bent lately. Keen to show that it can not only keep up but lead the way when it comes to safety and convenience features, JLR has come out with two more systems to show the way forward. JLR's new 360 Virtual Urban Windscreen system, showcased on an XJ sedan, adopts two novel approaches to getting around town. First up is the Transparent Pillar system, which uses a combination of cameras and display screens embedded in the A, B and C-pillars to make them virtually disappear. Instead of acting as blind spots limiting the driver's visibility, the system uses the roof pillars to display what's going on around the car. If there's an obstacle hidden by the A-pillars, the system shows you the potential hazard as if the pillars weren't there, and brings the obstacle to the driver's attention. If the driver turns his or her head to see a vehicle passing alongside, it projects the vehicle on the inside of the B- or C-pillar. The second technology integrated in the next-generation head-up display is the Follow-Me Ghost Car Navigation system, which takes a page out of the video-game playbook by projecting a "ghost car" on the windscreen that the driver can then "follow" instead of listening to turn-by-turn directions or looking at a map in the dashboard display. The system is similar to what Jaguar recently showcased on an F-Type for track use, but applied for more practical use on city streets and highways. The release of these systems also follows the integrated smart navigation and infotainment system displayed on the Range Rover Sport and the Transparent Bonnet showcased on the Discovery Vision concept. Though these new technologies might not be quite ready for production applications, their impressive sum total goes to show that Jaguar Land Rover is ahead of the curve when it comes to reducing driver distraction and increasing the driver's visibility. Scope out the latest systems in the press release and video below for a closer look of what the future holds for British-style luxury motoring. This content is hosted by a third party. Jaguar Land Rover and Cambridge have developed a touchless touchscreen

Thu, Jul 23 2020

Jaguar Land Rover and the University of Cambridge are working on new touchscreen technology that eliminates the need to touch the screen. Counterintuitive, right? It’s called “predictive touch” for now, in part because the system is able to predict what you might be aiming for on the screen.  The video at the top of this post is the best way to understand how users will interact with the tech, but weÂ’ll do some more explaining here. You simply reach out with your finger pointing toward the item on screen that you want to select. ItÂ’ll highlight the item and then select it. HereÂ’s how it works, according to the University of Cambridge: “The technology uses machine intelligence to determine the item the user intends to select on the screen early in the pointing task, speeding up the interaction. It uses a gesture tracker, including vision-based or radio frequency-based sensors, which are increasingly common in consumer electronics; contextual information such as user profile, interface design, environmental conditions; and data available from other sensors, such as an eye-gaze tracker, to infer the userÂ’s intent in real time.” Cambridge claims that lab tests showed a 50 percent reduction in both effort and time by the driver in using the screen, which would theoretically translate to more time looking at the road and less time jabbing away at the screen. If the prediction and machine learning tech is good enough, we could see this resulting in a reduced number of accidental inputs. However, on a certain level it almost sounds more difficult to point at a screen while moving than it does to actually touch a section of that screen. Without using the tech and its supposedly great predictive abilities, we canÂ’t come to any grand conclusions. One comparison you may already be thinking of is BMWÂ’s Gesture Controls. ItÂ’s already been addressed with a subtle diss from Cambridge: “Our technology has numerous advantages over more basic mid-air interaction techniques or conventional gesture recognition, because it supports intuitive interactions with legacy interface designs and doesnÂ’t require any learning on the part of the user,” said Dr Bashar Ahmad of the University of Cambridge. Of course, this tech can be used for much more than just vehicle touchscreen control. Cambridge says it could be integrated into ATMs, airport check-in kiosks, grocery store self checkouts and more.

Is this a Jaguar or Land Rover of the future? Yes, the near future

Tue, Feb 18 2020

Jaguar Land Rover has unveiled a concept vehicle, Project Vector, that the company heralds as preview of future urban transport. The Project Vector is an EV, naturally, and is built on a skateboard chassis with all mechanicals under the floor. That provides for maximum space efficiency in the city-sized vehicle—JLR says it's roughly four meters long, which would make it about half a foot longer than today's Mini Cooper hardtop. It also allows for reconfigurability. The interior is accessed via dual center-opening sliding doors on one side. Four individual seats appear to be mounted on tracks and are shown facing in the same direction, but JLR also says the vehicle can be adapted for delivery use (presumably with most of the seats removed). Project Vector is described as "autonomous-ready," but for now it has a steering wheel and pedals. It's also claimed to be optimized for ride-sharing or private use. The vehicle was developed at the UK's National Automotive Innovation Centre, with the intention to make it a part of the "urban mobility solutions" in the "ecosystem of a smart city," according to JLR. The first such smart city will be Coventry, where an "urban mobility service" will be launched in 2021.
