1995 North American Specification (NAS) Land Rover Defender 90

This Black/Black NAS D90 is a rare find!  It's one of only 1190 Soft Tops made in 1995 for the US market - '95 being the lowest production run of the three years (94,95, and 97) NAS D90s - and the Black Defenders seem to be the toughest color to find.  It's got some nice options/upgrades such as the diamond plate wingtops and sills, safari rack with ladder, step bumper with class iii hitch, rear flip and fold forward facing bench seat, upgraded stereo and speakers, Land Rover fiberglass removable hardtop, Land Rover rubber mats, tinted windows, and more.  So let's move to condition:

Outside:  As you can see from the photos, this Defender has typical imperfections consistent with age/miles but overall it's really a great looking truck.  I've included detailed photos of all panels so you can see the chips, nicks, dings, etc.  More close-ups can be emailed if you need them.  It appears 90% of the paint is original judging by the slight "checking" of the paint on tops of the panels.  Only the left rear quarter doesn't have that trait, so we believe that was repainted at some point over the last 19 years.  This is of particular interest because this Defender has salvage history (we've researched and understand it was a clerical error, but haven't been able to verify either way) but it's obvious to us it's never been hit.  There have been chip touch-ups of course, and it looks like the bumpers were painted to keep them looking fresh, but over all a very original example.  The upgrades like diamond plate wingtops/sills and safari rack really make this Defender look aggressive... definitely a head turner!

Inside:  The inside of this D90 is in good condition.  It has Land Rover rubber mats that are fairly new, and the floors underneath are clean and appear rust free.  There are seat covers protecting the front seats and the rear flip forward bench seat.  There's wear and a split on the original driver seat, but the outer covers are in great shape.  The dash is in good shape, as are the door panels.  Few flaws are the driver door pocket is missing, shift knob is a bit loose, trim around the glove box handle is cracked, and the right skylight is missing.  The prior owner upgraded the factory sound system to a Pioneer radio and MTX speakers that sound good along with some LED floorboard lighting that helps you see things inside at night.

Mechanical:  You read the mileage correctly - 151,000 miles and counting.  A testament to how durable these Defenders are.  It also helps show why they've become so collectible.  If you're not familiar with Defenders you should know to be wary of "low miles" rigs as they've often had odometer tampering or replacement.  There's many ways to tell... but you don't have to suspect that with this one (obviously)!  This D-90 is fairly stock and hasn't been heavily modified.  It runs and drives great.  The 5 speed transmission shifts well up/down gears, the clutch feels tight, and the transfer case hi & low (plus center locking differential) all seem to work well - although I haven't tested it off road.  The brakes are good with no pull, and this Landy tracks straight going down the road.  It has a fairly new NRP stainless steel exhaust system, battery, and other misc services done.  Tread is 50% and the tires are a bit dry rotted... but we will put NEW tires on if the Buy Now option is used.  There's a slight oil leak that looks like it's at the filter, but over all it's a very tight Defender that you'll be able to drive and enjoy for many years to come.

In closing, I've tried to provide an honest forthright description of this Defender, but please remember it's nearly 20 years old and I am not an expert on these.  I invite all interested buyers to inspect this Defender or I can drop it off at Land Rover for you to have a pre-purchase inspection done.  If you have any questions or need additional photos, please email and I'll get back to you ASAP.

Jaguar may join the FWD, small-car parade

Tue, 13 Aug 2013

Was it right for Chevrolet to detune the 1975 Corvette's base engine to 165 horsepower? Was Aston Martin wrong to make the Toyota iQ-based Cygnet? Is BMW crazy to be testing the new 1 Series with three-cylinder engines and front-wheel drive? It seems now, just as in the 1970s and 1980s, that emissions regulations and social considerations are driving some automakers to adopt unbefitting practices to maintain acceptance in the eyes of governments and consumers. Jaguar has jumped on the bandwagon, and is considering development of small, frugal, front-wheel-drive cars to help lower Jaguar Land Rover's average vehicle CO2 levels in light of tightening European emissions regulations, Autocar reports.
By 2020, the European Union expects the model range of every manufacturer to average 95 grams per kilometer, which is a new law passed by the European Parliament in April. Manufacturers who make more than 300,000 vehicles per year must meet these targets, and JLR is expected to be producing up to 700,000 vehicles per year by then. CO2 regulations after 2020 will only get stricter, as EU politicians already are talking about lowering CO2 levels to between 68 g/km and 78 g/km. (To put that in perspective, Autocar posits that driving a fully charged electric vehicle in Europe produces about 75 g/km when factoring in the power-generation infrastructure.)
Jaguar has some choices here, but so far they all have drawbacks. It could develop a new, compact chassis architecture for a line of compact vehicles, but the investment required for such a project could be prohibitively expensive. Jaguar has been looking into using the Land Rover Evoque platform for a small SUV, Autocar reports, but Land Rover brand manager John Edwards raises issue with such a plan, saying it may not be financially feasible.
