Jaguar Land Rover seeks to block U.S. imports of Porsche, Audi, Lamborghini, VW SUVs

You wouldn’t know it was about Jags and Lambos, to judge by its rather dry name: In the Matter of Certain Vehicle Control Systems. But thatÂ’s the complaint Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Plc filed on Thursday to block U.S. imports of Porsche, Lamborghini, Audi and Volkswagen sport utility vehicles it says are using its patented Terrain Response technology without permission. Jaguar Land Rover, a British carmaker owned by IndiaÂ’s Tata Motors Ltd., said in its filing with the U.S. International Trade Commission that the technology helps negotiate a “broad range of surfaces” and is a key feature in JaguarÂ’s F-Pace and Land Rover Discovery vehicles. “JLR seeks to protect itself and its United States operations from companies that have injected infringing products into the U.S. market that incorporate, without any license from JLR, technology developed by JLR and protected by its patent,” JaguarÂ’s lawyer, Matthew Moore, said in the filing. Representatives of Volkswagen didnÂ’t immediately respond to emails seeking comment on the complaint. Jaguar wants to block imports of PorscheÂ’s Cayenne; LamborghiniÂ’s Urus; AudiÂ’s Q8, Q7, Q5, A6 Allroad and e-tron vehicles; and VWÂ’s Tiguan vehicles. It said there are plenty of other luxury midsize SUV and compact crossover vehicles to meet consumer demand if the SUVs are banned from the U.S. Still, the premium Porsche and Audi lines provide much of the profit VW is using to fund its investments in technology for electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles and further innovations. In addition to the four brands, Volkswagen Group owns other upscale nameplates, including Bentley and Bugatti. The International Trade Commission is an independent, quasi-judicial agency that investigates complaints of unfair trade practices, like patent infringement. It canÂ’t award damages but does have the power to block products from entering the U.S. Owners of patents and trade secrets like it because it can work faster than the federal district courts -- the typical investigation is completed in 15 to 18 months. But Jaguar also filed patent lawsuits against the companies in federal courts in Delaware and New Jersey, seeking cash compensation for the use of the technology. Those cases are likely to be put on hold once the trade commission launches its investigation. AMS/Alpha Performance, known for their Audi R8 V10 Alpha 10 Twin Turbo package, have laid their eager hands on the Lamborghini Huracan. In this short and sweet video, the newly improved prototype Huracan struts its stuff on the dynamometer. Like the Audi, the Huracan also gains a pair of Garrett ball bearing turbos coupled with intercoolers, and the car has been built as a prototype of their stage one turbo system. It is virtually identical to the production version of AMS's twin turbo package for the Huracan, and the system has been devised to be a bolt-on system. The AMS package can be shipped out to anyone in the Alpha dealer network and installation has been made straightforward enough. "There is no hacking or cutting up the car", says Alpha's VP and lead engineer, Arne Toman. "It has been designed to be safe for the stock engine and transmission, and the only driveline improvement is an upgraded clutch pack which we include in the package." With pump gas, the Huracan TT Alpha 10 has a Veyron-baiting 1,000 horsepower, with the fuel system "maxed out" according to Arne. The Stage 2 setup, which will include forged engine internals, will go for 1,500 hp, while the third stage package dishes out more than 2,000 horsepower according to AMS. The prototype Huracan will run at the Gold Rush Rally next month, from Boston to Los Angeles. It should be a proper shakedown to prove the car's reliability, which is one aspect AMS Performance has been going for. Lamborghini expands Huracan range with rear-wheel-drive convertible

The Lamborghini Huracan LP580-2 Spyder completes the game of fill-in-the-blanks in the Italian's automaker's V10-powered lineup. With the brand already having proved its customary formula of "Remove the roof, retain the awesome," we expect this to be another uncommonly pleasing convertible from Sant' Agata Bolognese. The three-layer roof and mechanism migrate from the all-wheel-drive spyder. Taking 17 seconds to lower, the bodywork springs various tricks to maintain the appropriate cabin atmosphere. Two fins emerge from the B-pillar to preserve the car's profile, with narrow ducts in those fins managing wind flow through the engine compartment. Keeping the rear window up also calms the cockpit, lowering it invites the breeze and the wail of the engine. Additional zephyr management measures come in the form of removable mesh windguards that can be fitted next to the headrests. View 26 Photos Minor adjustments to the front and rear are the only visible differences between the RWD coupe and Spyder. The 5.2-liter V10 rocks the same 572 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque and top speed holds steady at 198 mph, but the 0-60 mile-per-hour time creeps up by two tenths of a second to 3.6 seconds. Dry weight clocks in at 3,320 pounds, a 258-pound jump over the coupe, but 330 pounds less than the all-wheel-drive Huracan Spyder we sampled - and loved - earlier this year. Lamborghini says the Huracan rear-wheel-drive spyder price will slot in between the MSRP of the two- and four-wheel drive coupes when the car goes on sale in January 2017.
