The exotic Lamborghini Gallardo sports car comes in two body styles for 2007--coupe and Spyder. With a 520-horsepower, 5.0L V10 engine powering less than 3,500 pounds, both body styles are among the fastest production vehicles on the market today. The Spyder can accelerate to 62 mph in only 4.3 seconds and can go 195 mph with the top up.The Gallardo's V10 engine, mounted over the rear wheels, follows a 90-degree design and has features such as variable valve timing and four valves per cylinder for optimum performance. Power is delivered through a standard six-speed manual or optional "e.gear" transmission--an electronically controlled sequential gearbox. The e.gear system comes with three modes: normal, which allows manual gear selection; sport, which makes faster yet sharper shifts; and automatic, for smoother shifts more like a conventional automatic.Traction for all that power is more assured than might be expected, thanks to the standard VT (viscous traction) all-wheel-drive system, which at constant speed brings 70 percent of engine power to the rear wheels but varies the ratio for best traction and stability. A mechanical limited-slip differential is used in back, and an electronic one is used in front. The Gallardo comes from the factory ready for the track, with a power-steering cooler, Z-rated Pirelli tires, a performance driving mode for the stability control system, and powerful Brembo brakes with eight pistons in front. The braking system can pull 1.1 g on dry surfaces, according to Lamborghini.Dual-zone air conditioning, central locking, bi-xenon headlamps, and a six-CD sound system, are all on the standard-equipment list. Head and thorax side air bags are standard, too. Notable options include heated mirrors, a navigation system, a video rearview camera, a garage door opener, and an onboard computer. The Gallardo's design was heavily influenced by contemporary aircraft construction. The cockpit is far forward within the car, and the windshield is one of the most sharply raked in any vehicle. A rear spoiler, which automatically deploys at about 75 mph and retracts when speed lowers to about 55 mph, helps increase stability at high speeds by creating down force. The Spyder has a power-operated convertible soft top that can be fully opened or closed in about 20 seconds, along with a fully retractable glass window, which can serve as a wind deflector with the top open. And when the top is open, it stows within a special carbon-fiber engine hood. The Spyder's eye-catching and different design is enhanced by the absence of roll bars--pop-up safety bars are deployed when a rollover is anticipated.

Lamborghini Huracan LP580-2 is a purist's RWD, 571-hp dream
Tue, Nov 17 2015Purists rejoice: Lamborghini has revealed the new Huracan LP580-2, ditching the all-wheel drive system for a rear-drive setup and a slight decrease in power. Like the previous Gallardo LP550-2 (and Balboni edition) before it, the Huracan LP580-2 is based on the same technologies as the LP610-4 coupe and Spyder. Instead of 602 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, it produces 571 hp and 398 lb-ft to the rear wheels through the same seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Some might balk at the lack of availability of a manual transmission, but Lamborghini figures few (if any) would have ordered one that way at any rate. What the new setup means is more tail-happy handling, which the engineers in Sant'Agata have only encouraged that through specific tuning of the electronic systems. Equally as important is a lower dry weight of 3,062 pounds – 73 fewer than the all-wheel-drive coupe. To set the rear-drive version apart from its AWD counterpart, Lamborghini has restyled the front and rear ends and anchored it to the road on staggered 19-inch wheels coated in Pirelli PZero rubber. Aluminum calipers grip steel (instead of carbon-ceramic) rotors to keep it all in check. In measurable terms, that all comes down to a 0-62 time quoted at 3.4 seconds and a top speed at 199 miles per hour - respectively 0.2 seconds and 3 mph slower than the LP610-4. But the LP580-2 isn't about outright pace or bragging rights. Those are best left to the more potent and grippy model, and to the yet more powerful versions that are sure to follow. In the meantime, we can look forward to the getting a closer look at the latest version of the Huracan in the flesh at the LA Auto Show. Lamborghini Huracan Performante is getting a drop-top version
Tue, Apr 4 2017If you just released a specialized, lightweight track weapon with fancy active aerodynamics, what would you do next? If you said chop the car's top off, you must work for Lamborghini, because that's just what the company is doing to its Huracan Performante. Our spy photographer has caught roadster versions of the ultimate Huracan out during testing. The car looks pretty much as you would expect. The lower body work from the front bumper back is all effectively carry-over from the coupe. The rear wing looks to have the same shape and functionality, too. Where things really change is with the engine cover. Like the normal Huracan roadster, the Performante loses the glass engine cover in favor of an opaque cover and a hard tonneau for the top. The engine cover features larger vents at the base of the wing's pedestals, and they appear to have large scoops at the other end. In addition to the new engine cover, this Performante roadster has different wheels which seem to be taken from the standard model. However, these will likely be swapped for the coupe's mesh-style wheels. A close examination shows that the wheels are shod in Pirelli P Zero Corsas that are probably the same compound as the standard tires for the Performante coupe. While this won't be the first time Lamborghini has built a roadster out of its high-performance entry-level sports car, the decision to turn the new Performante into one seems a little strange considering the effort to lighten it and endow it with magical aero. Even more so when the result is a car that Lamborghini claims laps the Nurburgring faster than the bonkers Porsche 918 Spyder. It feels like a step backwards to add a retractable top that probably weighs more and messes with the aerodynamics. But then, Lamborghinis are known mostly for being flashy and fast, and this Performante convertible will fill both criteria with ease. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. Lamborghini to announce new Cabrera before Christmas
Mon, 02 Dec 2013After ten long and sleek years of production, Lamborghini recently built its last Gallardo. But don't expect the Bolognese automaker to go without an entry-level model for long.
A few days ago, Lamborghini started teasing the Cabrera, as the Gallardo's successor is expected to be called. Now the latest intel suggests that Sant'Agata will announce the first details of its next ten-cylinder supercar before Christmas ahead of the car's official unveiling sometime in the new year.
The Cabrera is expected to follow a similar mid-engine, all-wheel-drive layout as the Gallardo it replaces, only this time producing 600 or more horsepower from its upgraded 5.2-liter V10 engine.
