Hyundai, Kia expanding plug-in vehicle line-up in Korea

Hyundai is shedding a bit of light on its electric vehicle plans. About time, too, since the company has spend a long period being quite vague about plugging in while touting its hydrogen plans. The Hyundai and Kia brands will both release their first plug-in hybrid vehicles next year in Korea; an all-electric version of the Kia Soul will roll out in May of this year and a mid-size electric vehicle will be launched as early as next year. Test versions of the Hyundai i10 electric vehicle have been on Korean roads since first being used at the G20 summit in Seoul in 2010. There have been hints about an electrified Hyundai coming to America, and at the Washington Auto Show last week, Michael O'Brien, vice president of corporate and product planning for Hyundai Motor America told AutoblogGreen that a new EV will be coming to the US market sometime within the next three years. A Hyundai executive told Korean national daily The Chosunilbo that the company will be significantly increasing its investment in hybrids and EVs to roll out a few eco-friendly models starting in 2015. It's hard to say which of these might come to the US market – a new LF Sonata will be coming out in both a regular gasoline and hybrid system in Korea; the US already has the Sonata Hybrid for sale. As for plug-in hybrids, Hyundai said that there will be both Sonata and Kia K5 (Optima) models coming out next year. These will also be the first-ever plug-in hybrids in the Korean market. Kia spotted testing new 2016 Sportage in Germany

Though the first-generation Kia Sportage stuck around for a whopping eleven years, its successor was on the market for six years before the current model was introduced in 2010. At that rate, Kia is likely to reveal the fourth-gen model some time next year, and that is precisely what we seem to have here in this latest batch of spy shots. Spotted undergoing testing at the Hyundai-Kia Technical Center in Russelsheim, Germany, this pair of Sportage prototypes are wearing a lot of camouflage to keep us from extrapolating too much about their design. Still, we're expecting much of the KX3 concept to make it onto the production Sportage as Kia moves its crossover design language in one direction and the sedans in another. Look for a wider, lower grille, wrap-around headlamps and more prominent fog lights to characterize the front end, new LED taillights around back and a silhouette similar to the current model's in between. Expect a range of gasoline and diesel engines to be offered in markets around the world, from 130 horsepower up to 250, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Equipment can be anticipated to be upgraded inside as well, bringing to bear the resources of what has become one of the world's largest automakers. Hyundai, Kia ratchet up fleet sales as retail transactions slide

Automotive News reports both Hyundai and Kia have stepped up fleet sales in an attempt to offset disappointing first quarter results. The Korean automakers saw their sales decline by nine percent compared to last year, while all major competitors managed to increase their sales. That situation marks an inversion of two years ago, when both gained ground after Japanese rivals suffered production and inventory shortages after the country's earthquake and tsunami tragedies.
Now, Hyundai can't come up with enough volume models in popular trim configurations to satisfy buyers, and lower-volume models are also in a snag. At the moment, Hyundai can only build 20-30 percent of Veloster hatchbacks with turbocharged engines while the US market would apparently support closer to 70 percent.
In order to reverse the sales slide, Hyundai and Kia have stepped up fleet sales of the vehicles they do have by some 50 percent, ringing up a total of 42,400 units in the first quarter. By contrast, Automotive News reports the seven largest automakers increased retail volume by seven percent and fleet sales by four percent as a group.
