Watch thief steal Jeep Wrangler with laptop
Thu, Jul 7 2016Advancements in technology, especially those in the automotive sector, have made cars safer, easier to drive, and harder than ever to steal. But a recent incident in Houston, TX, reveals that the latest generation of hackers and thieves knows how to use modern tech for their own nefarious devices. A car thief was caught on camera using a small computer to pilfer a 2010 Jeep Wrangler parked in its owner's driveway. The video shows a man entering the Wrangler and after a few minutes on the laptop, driving away in the vehicle. According to the Wall Street Journal, Houston police believe the same method could have been used on four other occasions involving late-model Wranglers and Cherokees. While the short clip looks like something out of a movie, this isn't the first time a Jeep has been hacked. The theft took the pair of thieves roughly 13 minutes from the time the first person opens the hood (not shown) to when the car leaves the driveway. Alarmingly, the Houston police department isn't sure what the laptop is being used for, the Journal reports. A Fiat Chrysler official told the newspaper that the thieves in the Houston incident might be using tools that only dealers have access to, which would allow them to pair another key fob to the vehicle. While that explains how they got into the vehicle, it still doesn't explain how a laptop could be used to get the vehicle running – especially when automakers ( Fiat Chrysler, Tesla, and General Motors) have altered their cars' electronics to reduce hacking. Theft rates have dropped by 96 percent since 1990, according to The New York Times, but recent events show thieves are making their own advances, prompting increased cyber protection efforts from automakers, auto-parts suppliers, and the government. It will come into focus later this month when US Transportation secretary Anthony Foxx, Lyft CEO and co-founder Logan Green, and General Motors' chairman and CEO Mary Barra speak at a cybersecurity summit in Detroit. Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk revived and leaked
Fri, Mar 18 2016We'd love to tell you all about the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk you see here. Thing is, we don't really know all that much. That's because, according to our colleagues at Jalopnik, it hasn't quite been officially unveiled yet. But that's probably right around the corner, now that the cat is out of the bag. From the leaked images, we can tell that this Grand Cherokee Trailhawk is a lot like the Trailhawk that was produced as a special edition for the 2013 model year. Even the graphics look similar. Expect to see some aggressive tires to go along with all the best off-road goodies Jeep has to offer. Throw in some red tow hooks to match the contrasting interior stitching, mix together some underbody protection, and you've probably got yourself a Trailhawk. We'll have to wait until FCA decides to unleash the official goods to know for sure what we're looking at, but we doubt there's a supercharged V8 underhood. We do know that's coming, hopefully soon, but this isn't it. So, while we patiently wait for that Hellcat-powered Trackhawk to make an appearance outside the realm of spy shots, enjoy the Trailhawk you see here. Completely uncovered 2018 Jeep Wrangler reveals evidence for folding windshield
Tue, Aug 15 2017After months of peering through heavy tarps and vinyl wraps, we finally get our very first look at a 2018 Wrangler without any camouflage at all. The photo comes from a user at JL Wrangler Forums, and it seems to show the truck rolling off the assembly line. Unfortunately, the angle isn't great, but it does give us a look at some of the detail changes to the body compared with the previous one. The most noticeable new detail is the vent that sits in a triangular scallop in the front fender. There's also a tumblehome character line running along the doors. Both of these styling features are consistent with leaked images and fan renderings also published by JL Wrangler Forums. The door handles have also changed, and appear to be more conventional pull-to-open pieces rather than the chunky pushbutton handles on the current Wrangler. It seems like the new Wrangler will still embrace open-air motoring, too. The doors retain exposed hinges that seem to be designed with easy removal in mind. Not only that, but we can see styled rubber pads on the hood. These have been featured on Wranglers all through the years to provide a cushion for when the windshield is folded down. So we would expect the windshield on the new Wrangler to be foldable, too. And, of course, this Wrangler has the traditional fabric folding top. We still expect to see the Wrangler make its official debut at the L.A. auto show, with sales beginning soon after. It will offer gasoline V6 and four-cylinder engines to start, with a diesel version coming later. The Wrangler also will likely gain new features including a hardtop with power sliding panels, and a full-time four-wheel-drive system.
