You are bidding on an excellent, rust-free and very well-maintained '76 Wagoneer in un-restored, good running condition.  It is factory equipped with the famed AMC 401 V8 engine, the TH400 transmission and Borg Warner Quadra-Trac transfer case.  I purchased it from the prior owner in Bend, Oregon and drove it down to Los Angeles over a year ago with the intention of restoring it and upgrading and modifying it to a more modern condition.  We've spent the past year working on making it a mechanically sound and reliable daily driver - which we've accomplished.

Below is a list of the improvements and modifications we've made:

  • Howell TBI Fuel Ignition:  This was purchased new and installed with in the past 2 months.  Kit purchased for $1,400.  CA emissions legal.
  • MSD Pro Billet Distributor:  Installed within past 2 months. CA emissions legal.
  • MSD Street Fire CD Multi-Spark Ignition Box and MSD Blaster 2 Coil:  Installed within past 2 weeks.
  • Edelbrock "Performer Series" Intake Manifold:  Brand new.  Installed within past 2 months.
  • Newly upholstered bucket seats and rear bench: Black vinyl and heavy-duty Sunbrella® outdoor plaid fabric.
  • New front brakes:  Pads and rotors.
  • New radiator and fan shroud.
  • Rebuilt steering box.

Good Stuff and Extras:  Jeep alloy rims with hubs.  Working electric rear window.  Original and fully functional roof rack. Full size spare.  Tires have plenty of remaining tread.  We worked a lot to stop any fluid leaks.  It's now 90% leak-free, although there is a slow and tiny oil leak.  Everything on the dash is fully functional (except for the clock). Carpet is relatively new.  Repair manuals, including factory service manual. I also have the original front bench seat and many extra parts that the prior owner had sourced (e.g., extra instrument panel, door panels).

Known Issues:  As an original condition vehicle, a bidder should understand that it is not without it's flaws and that there are further improvements which can be made.  It's a work in progress.  We started by making improvements and repairs to the drivetrain.  The paint is in its original condition, and is faded has a healthy patina.  There is no rust damage.  There are minimal and insignificant amounts of surface rust on the hood and roof where the paint is diminished.  The car needs a headliner (see photo).  We treated the bare metal on the inside of the roof with Aluthane aluminum paint to stop any surface rust.  The door panels need restoration.  No radio or sound system.  No AC.

Overall:  This is a great rig for the right buyer - someone with a passion for these muscly, even beastly, American classics and who's interested in either a clean daily driver or something to restore and modify.  I've enjoyed working on it, but have decided to switch my focus to an 80's 4x4 project (so, I need the funds).  I'm certain that I've invested more money in this car than I'll get back from its sale.  So, the winning bidder will definitely start out with a lot of value for their money.

Odds and Ends:  Winning bidder responsible for shipping.  I'll help facilitate for sure though.  Car is in Los Angeles - contact me to see or drive it.  $1,000 due upon winning bid (within 24 hours).  Thanks!

FCA to appeal reduced judgment in Georgia Jeep case

Thu, Aug 13 2015

FCA is appealing the $40 million verdict against it in a case in Georgia where a four-year-old boy died in a fire in a Jeep Grand Cherokee, according to The Detroit News. The jury originally awarded the child's family $150 million, but the judge decided to significantly to reduce the amount based on other precedents. The automaker has been considering further legal options since the decision was announced in July. The boy's death happened in 2012 when he was riding in a Grand Cherokee. The vehicle was rear-ended, and the fuel tank burst, causing a fire. This is the same issue that led to a recall of millions of the SUVs and a recent agreement with the US government from FCA to pay to get them fixed. In the original ruling, the jury said that the automaker was 99 percent responsible for the fatality and didn't adequately warn owners. It asked the company to pay $120 million for wrongful death and $30 million for his pain and suffering. FCA countered that the Jeeps met the safety standards of the time they were made. FCA requested that the jury's award be reduced in May calling the amount "grossly excessive." If the family didn't agree to a lower amount, the company also threatened to seek a new trial. Among the arguments was that $30 million was too much for the child's one minute of suffering. The parents did accept the judge's adjusted figure, though.

China orders Jeep to investigate Wrangler fire risk

Mon, 06 Jan 2014

It's been some time since we've heard anything about fires related to the Jeep Wrangler (foreign or domestic), but it sounds like the go-anywhere SUV could be in hot water once again in China. Bloomberg is reporting that the Chinese government is ordering Jeep to investigate the matter and, in the meantime, also recommending Wrangler owners to not drive their vehicles in "extreme conditions" due to a "relatively high risk" of catching on fire.
There is no indication as to how many vehicles or which model years are affected, but the previous fire problems in both the US and China - which led to investigations but no recalls - were traced back to automatic transmission fluid leaks. The article, however, does not say what the potential problem is this time around as Jeep has not released a comment on the matter. The official notice, in Chinese, can be found here.

FCA recalls 15k Grand Cherokees, Durangos over brake issues

Sun, Apr 3 2016

The Basics: Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is recalling 14,768 examples of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango, both from the 2015 and 2016 model years, and built between December 9, 2015, and January 14, 2016. The Problem: The left front brake caliper on some vehicles may have been made from the wrong type of iron, and could be prone to crack. A cracked brake caliper may not function properly. Injuries/Deaths: None reported. The problem was discovered by the automaker during testing. The fix: Dealers will need to check the casting date of the component in question, and if necessary, replace the brake caliper. The schedule for carrying out the recall service has yet to be outlined. If you own one: Expect to hear from the manufacturer to arrange an appointment with your local dealer.
