AMC....Where Quality Is Built In, Not Added On. Well along with the quality, they added a touch of rust to mine.
Here is one of the last AMC Jeeps built and this one is as typical a Wagoneer as you will find. It runs great and has fantastic 4WD, but it is rust prone. I have owned this Wagoneer for 10 years and it has been fairly dependable, but when the gas prices went up, I started using it less and less. Now it needs some work to make it great again and I do not feel like bothering. I had the floors fixed years ago, but they are soft again. Mostly by the front and rear passenger doors. The hump seems solid as does the load floor. The rear brake line on the drivers side rusted out and the exhaust needs replacement. It is lot drivable, but I wouldn't hit the highways with it (maybe on a dare involving cash). The heater core looks like it is leaking when I brought it out to take pictures. The hitch also is pretty tired from rust too. On the plus side, it always starts right up and the 4WD is operational and I have never gotten stuck with it even though I run street tires on it. It has a real 4 low on it which will pull out tree stumps. The paint on it still shines up and the woodgrain is pretty decent for a 26 year old car. The air did work but it has a slow leak and I had to recharge every other summer. It is still R12. I had a detachable face CD player professionally installed when I bought it that still works with newer front door speakers. The rear speakers are shot. The interior is very nice and the leather is still intact and pliable. The headliner is still up and isn't tore up. The front windows work fine but the rears are slow. Tailgate window works, but not the defroster. This would make a great driver if someone has the patience and time to do floor pans and all the other issues I tried to describe. It always got positive comments wherever I went with it because there just are not many of these around anymore. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. No money orders. SEMA crowns Mustang, FR-S as this year's hottest cars in the building
Wed, 31 Oct 2012After wrapping up the first day of the 2012 SEMA Show, organizers handed out awards for some of the trendiest vehicles on display. Since the whole point of SEMA is to show off new products available in the aftermarket world for use in cars, trucks and SUVs, each year, the show distinguishes the most popular vehicle in various segments. Not surprisingly, this year's Hottest Car and Hottest Sport Compact are the Ford Mustang and Scion FR-S, respectively, while the Ford F-Series brought home the Hottest Truck and the Jeep Wrangler was named the Hottest 4x4-SUV.
More than 2,000 companies are at this year's show, and the display booths represents a "vote" for each car to determing the trendiest vehicles in each of the four categories. It isn't clear if these awards also take cars brought by OEMs into account, but the Mustang and FR-S were definitely well represented by both OEM and aftermarket show versions.
As usual, the OEMs showed up in force at the this year's SEMA Show exhibiting a variety of cars ranging from production-intent cars like the beastly Ford Mustang Cobra Jet to much flashier rides like Scion's Carbon Stealth FR-S.
Chrysler 3.0L EcoDiesel V6: Autoblog Technology of the Year finalist
Wed, 19 Nov 2014Offering a diesel engine in an American pickup is anything but new - Ford, General Motors and Chrysler all offer excellent and almost impossibly powerful oil-burning engines in their various fullsize trucks. What is new and novel about the 3.0L EcoDiesel, though, is its size, and the variety of vehicles that use it. It's the smallest engine, as far as displacement is concerned, currently offered in a large truck in the US, and, for 2014 and 2015, it is available in the Ram 1500 and the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Though it may be small, it's got muscle. While 240 horsepower isn't particularly impressive these days, the engine's 420 pound-feet of torque more than makes up for that. The torque rating is even greater force than even the big 5.7-liter Hemi can muster. Chrysler's well-regarded eight-speed automatic transmission makes the most of all that bull-headed pulling power in both the Ram and Grand Cherokee. Chrysler claims the Ram EcoDiesel 1500 can tow as much as 9,200 pounds when properly equipped, which makes it "90-percent of the Hemi with a night and day difference in fuel economy."
Make no mistake; it's that promise of a sizable fuel economy improvement that many long-haul truckers will be most interested in. In the Ram 1500 that we tested for our Tech of the Year competition, the diesel engine costs $2,850 more than the gas-fed V8, and Ram estimates that EcoDiesel buyers will pay off their investment when compared to the Hemi engine in less than three years, which is considerably less time than the 4.5 or so years the average buyer will keep his or her fullsize pickup. The more you drive, the more you'll save, and the math proves equally as effective in the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Chrysler axes old V6s, goes all-Pentastar
Tue, 03 Sep 2013Old technology has a way of lingering on, particularly at Chrysler headquarters in Auburn Hills. So while the Pentastar V6 has replaced the older engine architecture in just about every application, it still soldiered on in some export markets. But the introduction of a new 3.0-liter Pentastar V6, produced in Michigan and meant only for the Chinese market, has put the final nail in the old engine's coffin.
Fitted into the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Wrangler just introduced to China at the Chengdu Motor Show, the downsized six uses the same architecture as the larger 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. But because of its 2,997cc capacity, it can be exported to China without the increased duty the 3.6-liter or even 3.2-liter Pentastar engines would incur. The 3.0-liter V6 develops 230 horsepower at 6,350 rpm and 210 pound-feet at 4,400 rpm.
Admittedly, it's unlikely, but even though the engine was said to be created solely to undercut tax thresholds in China and Europe, the 3.0-liter Pentastar has recently surfaced in rumors of an application here: as the boosted heart of a potential Cherokee SRT with anywhere from 375 to 410 hp.
