1964 Jeep Wagoneer 4x4

A running project, this 1964 Jeep Wagoneer has a chevrolet small block installed with two barrel rochester carburetor.  The rest of the drivetrain consists of a T-86 three speed manual floor shift transmission, Dana 20 transfer case, and Borg Warner R10 (Rancho) overdrive.  The overdrive is attached on the rear driveshaft only and will only function in two wheel drive.  A larger than stock gas tank was installed at some point, but otherwise the rest of the chassis is stock.  This jeep is all manual (no power steering, no power brakes, no power windows).

Recently, the radiator was thoroughly cleaned (top tank removed, rod tubes, re-solder, leak tested, and painted).  Other new parts:

  • Radiator hoses/heater hoses
  • Clutch master cylinder
  • Fuse block
  • Battery, battery cables and hold down
  • Fan Belt
  • Fuel filler hose
  • Fuel filter
  • Air Cleaner
  • Rebuilt carb
  • PCV, valve cover gaskets, PCV hose

Engine:

The engine is a Chevrolet small block with deck suffix XCB (service replacement CE0A02T), the cylinder heads are late 60's double hump castings.  I have found different information for the XCB code and it is either a 327 or a 350, but I don't know for sure.  It is mounted to the chassis using a Hurst motor mount; this engine was installed in the late 1970's according to a previous owner.  The engine runs well, sometimes a little puff of oil smoke when it starts.  Exhaust exits through ram's horn manifolds and dual glasspacks.  The exhaust system is old and not very pretty underneath, but does not have any noticeable leaks.

Transmission:

The transmission is a rebuilt T86 three speed, however the reverse gear does not work.  This transmission was rebuilt by a gentleman in the Bay Area and was installed by myself, I have pulled the top cover on the transmission and could not find any obvious internal issue why reverse does not work (the shift fork was engaged, the gears appear to be in perfect shape although I cannot see the cluster gear to verify its condition).  First gear does work, which is the same sliding gear as reverse (although reverse goes through the reverse idler).  I would assume that the transmission needs to be removed and disassembled to fix this issue.  The previously removed T86 comes with the jeep as well, although it is in very poor shape and I would assume that the only good part on it is the case and top plate.

Body:

The body has some rust as shown in the pictures.  Part of the floorboards have been replaced (drivers side foot well), but the same spot on the passenger side needs to be replaced as well.  There is also some rust along the edges of the floorboards near where they meet the body.  The area behind the rear wheels needs to be replaced on both sides of the vehicle, and on the drivers side the area above the wheel has some small holes.  On the roof, there is some rust in the drip rail on the front and back of the roof on both sides.  It does not appear to go through the roof, on the drivers side only it was ground down to bare metal and was not through.  There are some small bits of rust showing on the edge of the windshield gasket.  Lastly, the area above the tailgate hinges has some rust.  The only filler (bondo) that I can see on the body is in the tailgate.  Another early tailgate is included, although it has other issues including a crease and bullet hole (but no rust).  The extra tailgate also has the glass and winder mechanism.  There is an extra set of bumpers that come with the truck as well.  Two of the doors hinges are tight and will need some attention (maybe new pins).  All doors and latches function.

Interior:

The interior needs to be completely redone.  At some point, a later model interior was installed as shown in the pictures.  Included is two rear seats (one early and one later model one) and one front bench seat (early model), there are door panels which are all late model.  The window winder mechanism on the drivers side works, but the splines are damaged and will need attention.  The headliner needs to be replaced and there are not any carpets.  The dash is complete, but needs to be disassembled and repainted.  Another heater control panel in very nice shape is also included.

Other:

The front axle is a dana 27, the rear is a dana 44.  There are some unknown brand of locking hubs on the front axle, it has four wheel drum brakes.  The wiring needs to be finished, a new fuse block was installed and some of the engine wiring was redone, but the majority of work still remains.  When I acquired this jeep it had an electrical short and a lot of poor add-on wiring which I have completely removed, I did my best to keep the majority of the existing harness there.  The tires have tread, but are cracked from age.  There is a scratch on the front windshield where something got under the wiper blade on the passenger side.

Extras:

As previously mentioned, an extra tailgate, rear seat, transmission, bumper, heater control, and set of 4 centerline wheels are included.  There are a few minor small parts that also come with the jeep.  I will also offer a Muncie M20 transmission with adapter to Dana 18/20 transfer case and hurst shifter/linkage for an additional $500 on top of the auction close price to whoever purchases the Jeep if they would like it.

Please note that this is a project car, and while I have done my best to accurately describe the condition there may be some small items that I missed.  In-person inspection is recommended.  Buyer is responsible for shipping, if required.  $500 Deposit due within two days of auction close.  Lastly, I reserve the right to end the auction early.

Hank the Autodog takes a ride in the long-term 2014 Jeep Cherokee

Wed, May 13 2015

Autoblog readers, meet Hank, my 40-pound, six-year-old Shar Pei and Staffordshire Terrier mix, a combination also known as a Pit Bull. Pit Bulls and car enthusiasts have a lot in common. They're a little intimidating to your average man on the street, but at the end of the day all they want to do is feel the breeze in their ears. Dogs who love car rides are the ultimate enthusiasts, and Hank especially is a canine connoisseur of cars. There is nothing Hank likes more than to hop in and go for a ride. With an owner like me, he has developed refined tastes when it comes to cars. As our long-term Jeep Cherokee is about to leave the Autoblog Garage, and since the weather is warming back up, it's the perfect time to give our Autodog one last spin in his favorite Jeep. We wanted to see what a car ride looks like from a dog's perspective. Luckily, we have a cache of GoPros and plenty of cars on hand to give Hank one last chance to go for a window-down ride. After many pets, treats, and drives around town, we put together this video montage of Hank's best day ever.

Jeep spied testing new compact crossover

Tue, Nov 24 2015

Jeep is preparing a new crossover to slot in between the Renegade and Cherokee. Spied here for the first time, the new model is expected to arrive sometime around the middle of the new year. And with it, FCA's off-road brand will finally have a successor for the Compass and Patriot. From the little bit we can project at this early stage, the new C-segment Jeep is expected to ride on a modified version of the platform that underpins the Renegade and Fiat 500X. Motivation is tipped to come from the company's new 2.0-liter turbocharged Hurricane inline-four mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. We expect it to come in front and all-wheel-drive versions. The big question mark at this point is what the vehicle will be called. As the replacement for both the Compass and the Patriot, this model could adopt either nameplate – or it could wear a new one entirely. If the Renegade and 500X are anything to go by, the new Jeep could be offered as a Fiat as well, which could easily be dubbed the 500XL. We'll have to wait and see, but in the meantime you can check out the prototype – albeit in camouflaged form – in the image gallery above. Related Video:
