This auction is for a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 finished in Wild Berry Metallic (a.k.a. Black Cherry, Aubergine or Purple) with the Quartz Grey Barton/Bishop premium velour interior. Code named ZJ, it’s powered by a high output 190 horsepower and 225 lb. ft. of torque 4.0 liter straight 6-cylinder engine that has earned the reputation of being one of the brand’s most rugged and reliable powerplants in recent history. In fact, this engine has been used by Jeep since 1987 and was itself an evolution of a 258 cubic inch engine from back in the AMC days of the 70’s. So desirable it has been that it’s powered various Jeeps all the way up to the 2006 models. It features a cast iron block and cylinder head for excellent durability, an aluminum valve cover and intake manifold for reduced weight and multi-point fuel injection for maximum power output. This 4.0L engine is more than capable of performing any job you can give it, from carrying cargo with over a half ton of payload capacity to towing a heavy trailer. While it’s not as powerful as the V8 engine, you can get much better fuel economy with 22 to 24 mpg real world highway driving compared to the V8 which will barely reach 16-17 mpg. And it runs great on regular grade gas. Of course the 6-cylinder engine is much easier to work on with much more room under the hood than the V8.
The engine is mated to an Aisin AW15 5-speed manual transmission which sets this Grand Cherokee apart from all the others out there, and perhaps puts it into the semi-collectable category of Jeeps in the same vein as 5.9L models a few years later. The 5-speed was only available in 1993 and 1994 with estimates of around 1,000 so equipped in the first year and only about 300 for ’94 making this example especially rare. So in effect, the Grand Cherokee is the last full sized SUV sold in America to be equipped with a manual transmission. This transmission has a low first gear that provides brisk acceleration when starting off, while the high top gear allows for effortless highway cruising and good fuel economy. Finishing off the Grand Cherokee’s powertrain is a Command-Trac® four wheel drive system with a New Process 231 two-speed transfer case and rugged Dana axles front and rear. This 4X4 system has four driving modes. 2WD is designed for all normal driving conditions where low traction isn’t an issue. 4 High is for driving in snow, mud, sand or off paved roads and can be engaged on the fly at any legal speeds. 4 Low is for situations that require extra pulling power at low speeds such as when crawling over rocks or pulling a boat up a steep boat ramp. Neutral is for disconnecting the axles from the powertrain and is used most often when the vehicle is towed behind an RV with all four wheels on the ground. This Grand Cherokee is fully equipped with all the desirable safety, comfort and convenience features and equipment including:

I checked the truck out top to bottom and found no evidence that is was ever wrecked or that it even has had any previous paint or bodywork done to it. Remember, it’s hard enough to find a three year old or 30,000 mile vehicle that hasn’t had at least a fender-bender requiring a bumper, hood or fender to be replaced or repaired, let alone a 20-year-old truck with over 200,000 miles on it. The interior is beautiful as well. It has excellent upholstery, carpet, dashboard and door panels with no cracks, rips or tears or any significant signs of age. The truck doesn’t look or smell like it was ever smoked in. In fact, it’s not even equipped with a lighter. The cargo area looks like it was hardly ever used and the engine compartment has been fully detailed and is clean enough to eat off of. Mechanically it runs and drives great. The engine and transmission pulls strong and yet feels smooth both while accelerating and throughout the cruising range. The clutch is tight with no slippage and the shifter goes through the gears precisely with a little notchiness mostly when cold. The steering wheel is on dead center going down the road with no shakes or vibrations at speed, the brakes are firm with no pedal pulsations or pulling to one side when stopping and the suspension is tight. The A/C blows ice cold. It has a matching set of four BFGoodrich all-terrain tires size LT235/75R15 with very good tread on the fronts and fair to good tread on the rears. These tires are M+S rated and have a deep lug tread design for excellent off-road traction yet still provide a smooth quiet highway ride year round. They have been balanced with coated stick-on balance weights mounted on the inside of the wheel for a super clean look. These weights won’t corrode and turn ugly like cheap uncoated weights. The truck has been fully checked out and serviced with nearly $2,700 worth of new or recent parts, maintenance and repairs with original Mopar or other name brand parts so that only your enjoyment rather than your immediate attention will be required on delivery. Some of the items checked or serviced include:
Photos of some of the parts replaced and service done:
Oil change:
Oil filter:
Air filter:
Fuel filter:
Fuel pump:
Throttle body cleaning:
Spark plugs with the proper amount of anti-seize on the threads:
Spark plug wires:
Distributor cap:
Distributor rotor:
Serpentine belt:
Battery:
Front brake pads:
Front brake rotors:
Rear brake shoes:
Rear brake drums:
Parking brake adjustment:
Brake fluid flush and change:
Right rear axle shaft:
Clutch master cylinder:
Clutch slave cylinder:
Muffler:
Tail pipe:
Rear hatch supports:
In addition to the above service, all the accessories and electrical systems have been checked. All the power windows go up and down properly from the master switch and all the individual switches. All the power door locks including the rear hatch lock and unlock properly from all the switches and the remote. The radio works. The cruise control works. The power mirrors work. The headlights work on high and low beam. The fog lights and all the other exterior lights work. All the interior dome and courtesy lights work. The speedometer and all the gauges work. The heater and A/C works. If you are serious about buying a ZJ Grand Cherokee in general, and a hard to find 5-speed model specifically, this is about as low as they go in this nice condition. Remember, you can get a great deal on Ebay with prices sometimes way below retail, but no bidder is going to “steal” a vehicle and no seller is going to give one away either. Also when comparing prices to the other Grand Cherokees listed, remember the things that you won’t have to spend money on soon after getting it home. With this truck you won’t have to spend $600 on a fuel pump replacement, you won’t have to spend $500 for a new set of tires, you won’t have to spend $300 on a complete front brake service, you won’t have to spend $300 on a complete rear brake service, you won’t have to spend $250 on a tune-up and filters service, you won’t have to spend $250 on an exhaust system. With many of the other listings on Ebay, you’re lucky if they even check the oil before delivery. This is a one lady owner southern truck originally from West Virginia which is probably why it’s so clean. CLICK HERE to see the original 1994 title. The truck has a clean Carfax. CLICK HERE to see the Carfax report. It comes with all the books:
And both sets of factory keys and remotes including the valet key:
While most dealers just buy a vehicle to flip in a week or two, I bought this Jeep at a dealer auction more than a year ago to use as one of my personal drivers which is why I serviced it top to bottom. And I’m also passing on the savings in this Ebay auction. If instead of selling it back at a dealer auction I can sell it here on Ebay for a similar price and avoid dealer auction fees and transportation expenses, and the new owner gets the car at a true wholesale price, then both buyer and seller make out ahead. There are many other nice Grand Cherokees listed for $2,000 to $3,000 that may seem like good deals (although none with the rare 5-speed), but if after getting it home you find it needs another $3,000 in parts and repairs, it’s no bargain. If you know what this truck is, you know what it’s worth. If you are looking for a 5-speed Grand Cherokee in excellent condition at a good price, then this truck is hard to beat. Also remember that we don’t charge dealer processing fees or document fees that many other listings have for $200 or more and bury in their fine print. And don’t be fooled by some other auctions that are advertised as NO RESERVE and start at $100 or some other low price. Since no dealer is going to risk losing thousands of dollars if their auction doesn’t bring enough money, you can be pretty sure he has some “people” bidding on it for him. Especially those auctions that are private listings where it says “User ID kept private.” Also, because my reserve is close to the Buy It Now price, don’t think that you will get a much better deal if you just keep bidding it up instead of using B.I.N., especially if you need it delivered. TERMS OF THE AUCTION ARE AS FOLLOWS: Since this truck may be advertised locally, auction can be canceled at any time (unless auction ended early with BUY IT NOW) due to prior sale without liability to any bidder. A down payment of $500 (plus any additional delivery charge) is required within 3 days of the close of the auction, balance due in cash on delivery or certified funds on delivery if I deliver it or you pick it up, or before it’s dropped off at the transporter if a shipping company is transporting it, but no later than 7 days after the close of the auction without prior agreement. I accept bank or certified checks, money orders, credit cards through PayPal (accepted for down payment only). If paying balance with funds other than cash, buyer to fax copy of monetary instrument no less than 24 hours before picking up vehicle. The truck is sold as is. Buyer is welcome to inspect truck BEFORE the end of the auction or to have someone check it out on your behalf provided you authorize whoever is checking the truck to provide me with a copy of the results. I have tried to accurately describe this truck, both mechanically and cosmetically but you can expect a certain amount of minor flaws on ANY used truck including squeaks, rattles, drips, nicks, chips, scratches, blemishes and any other marks that are consistent with the age and mileage of the vehicle. There is no possible way to include all minute details and imperfections, however, I believe my listing accurately depicts this vehicle and if there are any issues they are noted in the description. Also remember that a vehicle is made up of thousands of mechanical parts and components and in an older or higher mileage used vehicle a part that is working fine now may go bad the next day, in a week, or a month from now. It’s nearly impossible to tell when a particular part or component will fail as most don’t exhibit prior symptoms, however, proper preventative maintenance as this truck has received, can prevent most problems or breakdowns from happening. In fairness to all bidders the reserve price will not be disclosed so please don’t even ask. Buyer responsible for transportation and truck must be paid for in full before it can be released. May deliver. Email or call for delivery quote or for any other questions. atikovi@email.com Maryland and District of Columbia dealer. Phone 202-246-5201. Please do not bid if you don’t intend to buy. FREE DELIVERY TERMS: Free delivery within 500 miles of the Washington DC area if bidder purchases vehicle with Buy It Now. (35 cents per mile for additional miles as shown in MapQuest.com from zip code 20001 to your address.) That is still the same rate as when I started on Ebay 14 years ago even with more than double the gas prices. Remember, the Buy It Now option disappears once the reserve price is met. The Buy It Now price is $3,995. AUCTION ENDS: 10:00pm sharp, EASTERN TIME Tuesday January 14th unless Buy It Now is used. |

NHTSA investigating why Jeep recall fix is taking so long
Mon, 07 Jul 2014Jeep's saga with the National Traffic Safety Administration and the voluntary campaign to repair 1.56 million vehicles for allegedly unsafe trailer hitches, is getting yet another chapter. The controversy appeared to finally be over in January when the automaker found a supplier for the replacement parts. Nothing is ever that easy, though, and the government regulator is now requesting documents from the company to clarify why the repairs are taking so long to begin.
Jeep parent company Chrysler has until July 16 to submit documents and answers to NHTSA explaining the situation. The regulator claims that despite its compromise to inspect and repair the models with improper hitches in June 2013, Chrysler didn't find a part supplier until December and didn't order the replacements until January. The government agency believes that the first components weren't manufactured until May of this year and vehicles may not actually be repaired until as late as August. According to the report, if the Chrysler doesn't supply what NHTSA is asking for, the agency could "take additional appropriate action as warranted."
Throughout this entire process, Chrysler has asserted that the vehicles met the applicable crash test standards of the time, and it has kept NHTSA abreast of the repair activity. In a recently released statement it said that the regulator analyzed eight rear impact reconstruction tests and found the replacement hitch to be safe. To keep up with the high demand for replacements, Chrysler is working with multiple suppliers, and they are running three shifts, six days a week to get the parts ready as soon as possible.
Jeep Renegade sales being held due to powertrain issue [UPDATE]
Wed, May 20 2015UPDATE: An unnamed FCA US source has clarified to Automotive News that while there is a software issue, it does not concern the transmission. The Jeep Renegade appears to be facing early software problems that are similar to the ones at the introduction of the Cherokee a few years ago. The issue is keeping the brand's latest compact crossover away from dealers until the situation can be resolved. The fault reportedly deals with the software controlling the Renegade's nine-speed automatic transmission. FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne briefly talked about what was happening in an interview with Automotive News. "I'm having a very bad engineering day," he said. "It's a combination of attributes of that vehicle that is making my life horrible." The company boss predicted at the longest it could take until mid-June to fix things. Through April, Jeep has sold 5,157 Renegades, including 4,214 of them in that month alone. Autoblog reached out to an FCA US spokesperson to learn more about the software problem, but the company had no comment. Getting the software right to control the nine-speed automatic plagued development of the Cherokee. The issues delayed the model's launch in 2013, and the company was still releasing improvements for some vehicles this year.
FCA CEO Mike Manley will run Americas for Stellantis after PSA merger
Sun, Dec 20 2020DETROIT — Fiat Chrysler CEO Mike Manley will run operations in the Americas when his company merges with FranceÂ’s PSA Peugeot early next year. FCA Chairman John Elkann announced ManleyÂ’s new post on Friday in a letter to employees. ManleyÂ’s role in the merged company had been a mystery. PSA CEO Carlos Tavares will run the overall company, to be named Stellantis. Shareholders of both companies will vote on the merger Jan. 4 to seal the deal creating the worldÂ’s fourth-largest automaker. The merger is expected to be completed by the end of March. PSA will get six seats on the new companyÂ’s 11-member board, which will be chaired by Elkann. The Americas, especially the U.S., are key to the new companyÂ’s success. Fiat ChryslerÂ’s Jeep and Ram brands are highly profitable, and Tavares has long wanted to sell PSA vehicles in the U.S. Manley has been the Italian-American automakerÂ’s CEO for 2 1/2 years, taking over when Sergio Marchionne died in 2018. Stellantis will have the capacity to produce 8.7 million cars a year, just behind Volkswagen, the Renault-Nissan alliance and Toyota.
