As ridiculous as it may sound, the reason I have decided to sell this fantastic automobile after only 487 miles is because it is TOO nice.  I am a building contractor that was looking to replace my aging Suburban, that I use daily for work, with something more a little more exciting.  There aren’t many SUV’s that are more exciting that the Jeep SRT so I tracked one down online that was in transit to a local dealer, equipped with all the perfect options.  As soon as it arrived I took delivery the next day.  Before unleashing it to the public though I made subtle modifications to the truck that I feel should have been part of the factory SRT package from the beginning.  All work was done professionally by a top-level body shop.  Here is a list of the improvements:

  1. The factory chrome grill surrounds were painted Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat (exact match to the trucks main color, but a slight contrast to the solid black front fascia that is standard on all SRT’s).
  2. The factory plastic grills were replaced with black powder coated stainless steel grills, manufactured by T-Rex.  Please be aware that these first two modifications required the complete removal of the front bumper cover and front fascia, not an easy job.  This was all done professionally and perfectly.
  3. The front factory chrome Jeep emblem was replaced with a gloss black emblem, a genuine Mopar part.
  4. The rear factory chrome Jeep emblem was removed and professionally painted gloss black to match the front emblem. (A black emblem for the rear tailgate is not yet available in the aftermarket.)
  5. One chrome SRT emblem was added to each front door and looks completely factory, they are also genuine Mopar parts.  Surprisingly, there is only one SRT emblem on the truck from the factory and that’s on the rear tailgate.  Not enough SRT advertisement, in my opinion, for a 70k automobile.
  6. And now for the most important modification of all.  All the chrome trim surrounding the side windows was painted satin black.  In my opinion, there is no place for chrome window trim on an SRT, it looked really out of place.  The satin black paint looks as if it came like that from the factory and looks absolutely stunning.

The truck also comes with an extended warrantee, which extends the factory 36 month/36,000 mile warrantee to 60 months/75,000 miles.

The next desirable feature that this truck has was gotten through pure luck.  When the body shop did the paint matching for the grill surrounds, he told me that the factory Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat paint (paint code PXR) comes in 9 different shades, which is considered normal production variations.  This truck has the darkest black of all nine shades.  The black paint on some Grand Cherokee’s is light and looks very charcoal like, which is why I was hesitant to get black at first, but this car is very black and looks awesome.  It’s just the luck of the draw.  You can order a brand new Jeep in Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat and it may not look like this one.

As far as use goes, the car was driven back and forth to the body shop (to perform the aforementioned upgrades), twice to dinner and once to work.  It was when I finally drove it that one day from job site to job site that I finally realized there was no way I could use this beautiful truck for work.  I had to find a safe place to park it at whatever construction site I visited and worried about it all day long.  The truck is just too nice for my needs.  Knowing in the future I would eventually be driving it through mud, gravel, etc., to get to my job sites made me a little nauseous.  I drove it straight home and it has been in my climate controlled garage ever since.  So if you are looking for an essentially brand new Jeep SRT, only better, this is the truck for you.

Jeep Wrangler Polar Edition coming to America

Wed, 23 Oct 2013

Jeep originally took the wraps off its Polar Edition Wrangler at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, and at the time, we figured this would be a Europe-only affair. (Perfectly fine, since we US customers haven't exactly been lacking special edition Wrangler models over the years.) But now, and as Jeep says, just in time for winter, the automaker has announced that the ice cold Wrangler will be hitting North American showrooms in November.
Based on the Wrangler Sahara model, the Polar Edition can be had in either two- or four-door body styles, with a unique Hydro Blue paint job as the featured color. (Buyers can also opt for less-special Billet Silver and Bright White hues.) Other exterior enhancements include a body-colored hardtop, 18-inch gloss black wheels, the Powerdome (power bulge) hood, and unique decals all around the body.
But the Polar Edition isn't just about some paint and stickers. Jeep has fitted this Wrangler with a Dana 30 front axle and Dan 44 rear axle, as well as the Trac-Lok anti-spin electronic rear differential. Like all US-spec Wranglers, the Polar Edition uses Jeep's 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, producing 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Both a six-speed manual and five-speed automatic transmission are available.

Jeep Cherokee joins Altitude trim line

Wed, 22 Jan 2014

Jeep fans spoke up last year by naming the Altitude trim level, and the automaker rewarded them with an assortment of cool Jeeps sporting a sinister, blacked-out appearance. Joining the ranks of Jeep models offering an Altitude trim level is the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, and this might be the best looking of the new Cherokees - including the Trailhawk.
Like the previous versions of this model, the 2014 Cherokee Altitude adds black wheels and exterior trim and molding, and it's only offered in four colors: black, silver, white and granite (shown above). You definitely have to love the look of the black accents since the Altitude raises the Cherokee's price by $2,000 to a starting MSRP of $24,995 (not including destination). Jeep says that the 2014 Cherokee Altitude is a limited-edition model, but there is no mention of any specific production figures.
Joining the new Cherokee Altitude are the updated versions of the Grand Cherokee Altitude and Wrangler Altitude with similar limited color combinations and pricier MSRPs starting at $35,290 and $31,595, respectively. These three new Altitude models will go on sale this spring joining the Compass Altitude and Patriot Altitude, which are on sale now. Scroll down for more info on the updated 2014 Jeep Altitude lineup.

Gilles defends 2014 Jeep Cherokee design as "very contemporary"

Thu, 28 Feb 2013

Following the forced-hand introduction of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, there has definitely been a mix of responses revolving around everything from its design to the return of the legendary nameplate. As evidence of this, just check out the 1,000+ comments in our article last week and some of the many opinions that were voiced. Following this not-too-warm reception, Ward's Auto had a chance to talk to Chrysler designer chief - and SRT president - Ralph Gilles, who shed a little more light on the styling direction of the new Cherokee.
Rather than looking to previous models for inspiration, Gilles says that the Cherokee has been designed to be more contemporary, with Mark Allen, head of Jeep design, adding that a main goal was to make sure the design still looks modern five years from now. Interestingly, Gilles does point out that one of the design elements incorporated on the new Cherokee that pays homage to past Jeeps is the sharply downward angle for the leading edge of the beltline, which he notes is meant to mimic the look of the old YJ and TJ Wrangler models fitted with half doors. Of course, the squared-off wheel openings - a signature Jeep cue - are still used.
This is probably a design that will need to be seen on the street in actual daylight to properly assess, but in the meantime, we'll bring you full images and impressions when the Cherokee debuts at next month's New York Auto Show.
