1983 Jeep Scrambler CJ8 six-seater with power-steering and manual transmission. All lights work properly - turn signals, high beams, brake lights, reverse, gauges, etc.
The body is virtually rust-free! The entire body tub and underbody has been stripped down to bare metal and treated with POR-15 rust protectant coating (see one of the pictures of the undercarriage in the rear of the vehicle). The frame is similarly rust-free, not rot anywhere.
258 cubic inch 4.2 liter inline 6-cylinder engine, starts right up and runs great. 4-speed manual T-176 transmission and Dana 300 transfer case. 4wd engages and works properly.
Newly rebuilt carburetor (installed last week) which is now tuned to a perfect idle and runs great at 85mph as well. It's got the more reliable and responsive Motorcraft 2100 carburetor with manual choke, nutter bypass, high-flow K&N filter, GM TFI distributor upgrade, and manual throttle for in-cab idle modulation. I have two extra Motorcraft 2100 carburetors as well as some other parts that will be included with the Jeep.
Centerforce II clutch installed, and aftermarket exhaust (a nice, low tone, not loud). New battery, starter, and starter relay. Steering linkage is tight and brakes are good.
Bestop Supertop soft-top and two-piece soft-doors -- like new condition. New windshield and windshield frame and rubber cowl.
Fold-forward adjustable front bucket seats, Bestop fold & tumble rear bench with removable headrests. Two folding rear seats with seatbelts from a 1990's Ford Ranger which fold up and out of the way when you need the storage space in the rear. All new seatbelts, with modified TJ Wrangler seatbelts in the front with the YJ buckles for added safety. Also has a removable, steel locking security console with armrest. Boss audio CD player/radio with aux-cable plug and remote, Pioneer box speakers in rear, Boss speakers in dash.
32x11.5x15" Goodyear Wrangler MTR's newish with less than 10k miles on them. Wheels appear to be American Racing Baja Alloy wheels. Aftermarket bumpers front & rear, with 2" receiver and shackles. Rear tire carrier has been removed but is in good condition and will be included with the Jeep.
It's a great mild-mannered family vehicle (my part-time daily driver in the summer), and isn't heavily modified. It would take a little work and a new paint job to turn this into a showroom Jeep Scrambler (it would be well worth the time & effort), or you could go the other direction and modify for offroad use (I would rather see it continue its life as a daily driver or restored to showroom condition and preserved, but that's for the buyer to decide). If planning to use as a daily commuter vehicle, I would recommend installing the Chevrolet K5 Blazer heater blower-motor (directions can be found online), an easy modification which will make this vehicle very hospitable in the winter months (please just avoid the salt!).
Not sure of mileage, but it's a great daily driver, and very reliable for a 30 year old Jeep!
Be assured this is a turnkey vehicle which you can confidently drive home as soon as it's yours, even if you live very far away!
The paint job is not professional, it looks decent but you'll see in the pictures it isn't a high gloss finish. Some chips and imperfections etc.
There were two small patches rusted through the floor (driver and passenger outer floorpan area) which didn't spread beyond the 3" size (a full rollcage had previously been removed which uncovered these). These spots were treated and patched up with POR-15 fiberglass, and can easily be cut out and welded if you do decide to go the 'showroom restoration' route.
Also, there is slight bending of the body sheet metal in the typical area near the lower-front corner of the passenger door. It's not rust, just warped a bit.
The fuel gage doesn't work - I've got a replacement (which will be included with the Jeep) that I just never got around to installing. Also, I like the Spartan look of the steel dashboard, but if you'd like a black plastic dash I can get one pretty easily.
These are great vehicles -- the CJ-8 is similar to the CJ7 (Renegade and Laredo editions were made of both, and the Comanche trucks as well as the Wranglers trace their lineage back to the CJ's) but with a different body style -- extended as a pickup truck for utility purposes. The CJ8 and CJ7 were designed to provide a more comfortable alternative to the CJ6 and CJ5, respectively. The Scramblers were only manufactured for a few years in the early 1980's, and less than 30,000 were made. Today, only a few thousand are left in various stages of condition, many are pretty bad, and far fewer are still in drivable condition with the body intact. This is an American relic. Thanks for looking, and to prospective buyers, I hope you can preserve it, and that you enjoy it as much as our family has.

Jeep Cherokee faces on-sale delay
Sat, 23 Mar 2013A report in The Wall Street Journal looks at some of the obstacles to the 2014 Jeep Cherokee that go beyond its mootable yet "very contemporary" looks, almost all of them based on Fiat's financial position. Starting with that sheetmetal, in defense of it SRT president Ralph Gilles and Jeep design head Mark Allen said they wanted to "make sure the design still looks modern five years from now."
The WSJ piece doesn't cite longevity as a factor, instead saying that its features originated in a design for an Alfa Romeo, the transformation into a Jeep design meant allowing Chrysler get it to market more quickly and save "hundreds of millions of dollars" in engineering.
The need for Fiat to save money while it weathers the European situation has cut budgets for development, engineering and the pace of retooling the Toledo, Ohio plant to build the Cherokee. In a familiar case of snowballing at work, among the effects will be pushing back the Cherokee's volume sales date and delaying updates to some of Chrysler's other products.
Baby Jeep to join Renegade in FCA's plan for new Italian-built models
Tue, Nov 27 2018FCA is boosting its European production, introducing new models that will be built in currently under-utilized manufacturing facilities. Among the new models is a new small Jeep, smaller than the current Renegade, as Automotive News reports. FCA's Mike Manley mentioned the entry-level Jeep model earlier this year, also saying that the vehicle is targeted to European and possibly Latin American customers; in the summer, Autocar placed the launch date in 2022. The new "baby" Jeep would be made in the same factory in Pomigliano, Italy, as the small Fiat Panda, which is a top seller in Italy. The current generation Panda was introduced in 2011; if it gets a replacement in 2022, it could possibly share a platform with the Jeep model — or, the Jeep could be an eventual outright replacement for the Panda. One of Fiat's earlier core products, the Punto hatchback, was canned in August, and that production capacity will be used to make the Jeep Compass instead, at the Renegade-producing Melfi factory in southern Italy. The Compass has not previously been built in Europe. The Fiat model portfolio would be shrunk to just the 500 model family and the Panda — the 500 would also be FCA's key electric vehicle offered in Europe. It is not yet clear whether the electric 500 would be made in Turin, Italy, or in Poland; Turin might also get a Giardiniera-badged wagon version of the refreshed 500. As for the Alfa Romeo brand, it is set to gain an even bigger SUV model than the Stelvio, based on the Maserati Levante's platform. The Levante's sales have suffered recently in China, but Maserati does have light in the horizon: The Alfieri 2+2 grand tourer is still in the cards, with a launch expected for 2020 and both a convertible and an electrified version planned to follow. The Alfieri would be made in Modena, Italy, according to Automotive News' sources. None of these plans namedrop the storied Lancia brand, which has been shrunk to just the Ypsilon hatchback, based on the same platform as the current 500 and Panda. Despite that, the Ypsilon was again the second-bestselling car in Italy after the Panda in October. It is unlikely that FCA will be able to ignore this, but it is just as unlikely that any development money will be afforded to come up with a replacement for the Ypsilon, which is as similarly old as the Panda. Perhaps official announcements expected on Thursday will also clarify what will happen to Lancia.
Georgia jury awards $150 million in Jeep fire case
Fri, Apr 3 2015FCA US continues to fight allegations that some Jeep Grand Cherokee and Liberty sport-utility vehicles are unsafe because of the possibility of fires in rear-end collisions. In one recently decided case, a jury in Georgia awarded $150 million in damages to a family whose child died in a blaze in 2012 in a 1999 Grand Cherokee. The jury believed that FCA acted with "reckless and wanton disregard," and didn't do enough to warn owners, according to Reuters. The automaker was found liable for 99 percent of the damages, and the remaining one percent was for the driver who rear-ended the family's SUV. In a statement from FCA US, the company said that it is considering an appeal. Under Georgia law, the automaker was allegedly unable to present a three-year investigation of rear-impact data to jurors. This was the same information the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration used to decide that the '99 Grand Cherokee "did not pose an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety." The original recall for the models covered 1.56 million examples of the 2002-2007 Liberty and 1993-1998 Grand Cherokee. With the fuel tank located between the rear axle and bumper, NHTSA and FCA eventually agreed to install a trailer hitch for extra protection. A further 1.2 million 1999-2004 Grand Cherokees owners received notice of a customer service action to have their vehicles inspected, though no hitch installed. Subsequent tests showed this remedy to be effective for impacts below 40 miles per hour. The automaker has maintained the SUVs met the applicable safety standards of the period when they were built. The company was chastised by NHTSA last year for low repair rates of the problem. FCA US LLC Statement Regarding Walden v Chrysler Group Verdict: April 2, 2015 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US is disappointed and will consider an appeal of this verdict. It is unfortunate that under Georgia Law the jury was prevented from taking into account extensive data submitted to NHTSA during a three year investigation, which included more than 20 years of rear impact accident data for tens of millions of vehicles. This and other information provided the basis for NHTSA's determination that the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee did not pose an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety.
