I am selling my 1989 Jeep Wrangler, YJ which I have owned since 1990.  I purchased it from the original owner at 9,000 miles and used it as a daily driver throughout the 90's.  During the last decade or so, I have kept it garaged and only used it as a weekend recreational vehicle-especially without the top, for summertime activities s/a float trips, camping etc.  Although it looks like a rock climber, it has never been used off road except for gentle trips through my farm to check my cattle operation.  I have always assumed that I would never part with it, but life has given me a reason to change my mind.  My 22 year old daughter (who was born about the same time I bought the Jeep) and her husband are buying their first home.  I have elected to contribute the proceeds from the sale of this vehicle toward their down payment.  


A few years ago, I made several upgrades to the Wrangler, including a suspension lift, new Warn front bumper with 8,000# winch, new wheels/tires (which have now have about 10,000 miles on them) and rear bumper w/swing-out spare tire support rack.  At the same time, I had a fresh coat of exterior paint applied along with the black fender flares and running boards.   New front and rear seats were installed at this time also.  Since this time, the vehicle has been used as evidenced by the numerous dings, scratches and worn areas which have developed in the finish.  I have attempted to reveal these in the numerous photos.  You will also notice one pic of the rear seat demonstrating a partial thickness cut in the seat cover (see pic with iPhone and hand shown for perspective). This does not appear to affect the integrity of the fabric since it is not a full thickness defect.  Also notice the three shots of the paint crazing on the two front fenders.  
These have no evidence of rust, but appear to be defects of the paint only.  I painted the hardtop 10 or 12 years ago, and you can see from the pictures that the frequent removal and replacement has placed several scratches, nicks, and dings in this.  If I was keeping the Jeep, I would paint this again for a quick, low cost upgrade.  

Mechanically, the Jeep has no known problems.  It has always been a dependable auto that starts and runs smooth.  In preparation for the sale, I wanted to verify that there were no mechanical issues with the vehicle, so I brought it to my mechanic and told him to go through it and fix anything that needed repair.  He first performed a carburetor cleaning, but when this was done, I didn't feel it idled smooth so I took it back.  He ended up performing a Nutter bypass and put on a new carb.  I had read online that this would be a real power booster and I have to agree.  Just like promised by various websites, it now starts, runs, idles and accelerates better than ever.  Please note: the Nutter bypass might prove to be a problem with licensing in those states with strict emissions testing; please check your state's regulations on this before bidding or you might end up having to undo the bypass.  Everything else seems to be working fine except for the following two items: The Jeep has A/C, which is not currently cold. The last two or three years that I drove it with the top on required additional freon at the start of each summer season-then it always worked fine.  As I mentioned above, I have only used this Jeep without its top for the past few years, so I haven't had the need for A/C and didn't put any freon in for some time.  I have no reason to believe that it needs service beyond refrigerant, but I cannot be 100% positive-since I haven't tried this in 3-4 years.  The instrument panel gages all work appropriately except for the gas gage, which reads full-until half the tank is used, when it starts declining.  It reads 3/8 when the tank is empty.   

If you are looking for an attractive, low mileage, essentially original Jeep that is mechanically sound, you search is over; this is the one you've been shopping for.  When driving down the road, this beautiful Jeep will turn heads-especially with the top off.  On the other hand, if you are looking for a flawless vehicle or a perfect ground up restoration-this is not your car.  Although it is well above the norm for a 24 year old automobile, it is not perfect.  As my pictures have attempted to show, close scrutiny will reveal several imperfections.  I have greatly enjoyed this Wrangler and I cared for it like a member of my family.  Except for trips, it has never spent any nights outside of a garage.  I am sad to see it go, but I trust it will be an attractive/dependable automobile which will bring many years of pleasure to its new owner like it did for me.

2013 Jeep Wrangler Moab Edition

There will forever be a soft spot in my heart for the Jeep Wrangler. The last one I owned was red, and, as a 1990 model, had the square headlights derided by Jeep enthusiasts who grew up on the Civilian Jeeps that descended from their General Purpose military ancestors. As a teenager, I couldn't have cared less what shape its headlights happened to be - to me, a Jeep Wrangler represented freedom; a carefree do-it-all machine equally at home with the top stowed away in the summer or with the heater on full blast in the snowy clutches of Old Man Winter. In Dr. Seuss parlance, my square-headlighted Sneetch was just as worthy as any round-headlighted Sneetch.
All that said, I'll be the first person to advise against buying a Jeep Wrangler of any sort for owners who don't plan to use it as its makers intend. There's no good reason to punish yourself with a stiff and springy ride, a loud and somewhat drafty (though generally water-resistant) interior or the poor fuel economy expected of a block-shaped vehicle if you don't enjoy its other, more exciting benefits.
Of course, Jeep has done its darndest over the years to make the Wrangler as civilized as possible while keeping it as capable as federal law will allow. The 2013 Jeep Wrangler Moab edition is one of Jeep's latest attempts to attract attention from the upper reaches of the active lifestyle set, and I spent a week with one to see what makes the Moab special.

Now that the marketplace has been oversaturated with cute-utes, crossovers, and CUV coupes, are we about to see a resurgence of real, honest-to-God SUVs? Ummm... maybe. The stars seem to be aligning in that direction, at least that's the sense I'm getting. We know an all-new Jeep Wrangler is only a few auto shows away; and that Jeep is about to introduce a new Grand Cherokee Trailhawk for 2017, in the same rugged spirit of the successful Cherokee and Renegade Trailhawks. Ford has hinted at a neo-Bronco, after showing the concept above in 2014 to wet the mouths of all those Duck Dynasty-types out there. And, and... wait for it... I recently learned that Subaru sent a questionnaire out to some Forester owners asking if they might be interested in an off-road package if it were offered. The items listed were pretty hardcore, serious stuff, such as: integrated tow/recovery hooks, additional ground clearance, more rugged wheels, skid plates, altimeter, front-view off-road camera, improved approach and departure angles, advanced differentials, Inclinometer, full-size spare tire, upgraded off-road suspension components, more aggressive tires, off-road driving mode (engine, transmission, throttle, and steering settings), more rugged styling, low-range gearing, and a more advanced traction management system. Folks that's not my wish list (well, actually it is), but those are words from Subaru, asking if that's what customers would like to see. Need proof? Go to the SubaruForester.org website. So... no promises or guarantees here, and feel free to call me a rumormonger if you like; but the next few years could prove very interesting for those who actually do go off road. Chrysler investing $20M in Toledo plant to support 9-speed auto production

In 2011, Chrysler announced a $72-million investment in its Toledo Machining Plant to modernize production of the eight- and nine-speed torque-converters for automatic transmissions made there. That upgrade work won't be finished until Q3 of this year, but Chrysler has already announced a further $19.6-million investment to increase production capacity for the nine-speeders.
The extra units will be necessary because the nine-speed transmission they'll be mated to is going into three popular models: it will debut on the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, then go into the Chrysler 200 and Dodge Dart. The company predicted that this year alone it would sell 200,000 units equipped with the nine-speed tranny, and it is spending some $374 million in addition to the investment in Toledo to upgrade production capacity for it.
The work attached to this new investment won't begin until Q3 of 2014, and it will be finished by the end of that year. There's a press release below with all the details.
