NHTSA investigating 2015 Jeep Cherokee after new owner's total-loss fire [w/video]

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a Preliminary Evaluation into the 2015 model year Jeep Cherokee after a single example caught on fire in California. This investigation will decide the cause, scope and frequency of this possible problem and will decide whether a recall is necessary for 50,415 potentially affected examples. According to Automotive News, the Cherokee's owner only purchased the CUV about two days before the fire, and it had been driven less than 100 miles. The new buyer reported parking the Jeep, and noticed a smell like smoke. Shortly after, the vehicle was consumed in flames. There were no injuries, but much of the incident was captured on video. NHTSA is also trying to decide whether another report is related. In this case, a driver noticed smoke under the hood of a 2015 Cherokee with just 45 miles on it, while driving at 60 miles per hour. FCA recalls over 200k Jeep Cherokees for windshield wiper static

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is issuing a recall for over 200,000 versions of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee due to a problem with static buildup disabling the windshield wipers. FCA has identified 158,671 units in the United States. Another 18,366 vehicles are estimated to be affected in Canada, a further 3,582 in Mexico, and 26,049 outside of North America. The problem, according to the first statement below, results from static building up if the wipers are operated in dry conditions. The static could mess with the wipers' control module, rendering them disabled. To fix the problem, dealers will be instructed to install a ground strap to the module. In parallel, FCA is also offering incentives to the owners of certain trucks that were subject to recall but for which remedies were not immediately available. To encourage those owners to bring their older vehicles in for the required service, the automaker will disperse $100 prepaid cards for use at their discretion. The program is offered to owners of certain model year Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Liberty, Chrysler Aspen, and Dodge Durango sport-utility vehicles, as well as certain Dodge Dakota and Ram trucks. Owners of the affected Grand Cherokees will have the option instead to take a $1,000 consideration toward the purchase of a new vehicle or for parts and service. Two filmmakers decided to make the best of this weekend's historic snowstorm by turning New York City into a winter sports enthusiast's wonderland. Popular YouTube based filmmakers Casey Neistat and Jesse Wellens uploaded this video of Neistat snowboarding through the empty streets of Manhattan yesterday. While officials were warning motorists to avoid driving in the blizzard, Neistat and his buddy were being pulled by a Jeep Wrangler through Times Square. It goes without saying that this stunt is suicidally dangerous. There are several moments in the video where Neistat gets pretty close to wiping out on the back of parked, snow covered cars or on the cornerstones of buildings. All to the soundtrack of Frank Sinatra's New York, New York, no less. The police do make a cameo, but NY's finest admit to merely wanting to watch the escapades. "Someone complained about you, so we're going to act like we're talking to you," the unnamed officer can be heard saying on video. The original video has since gone viral, and currently stands at over 6.2 million views in just 24 hours. Despite the virality of their tricks, please do not attempt this in your own snowbound metropolis.
