The 4.0 Liter straight six cylinder engine runs strong, the automatic transmission shifts smoothly. The 4-wheel drive (H and L) engages smoothly and operates normally. The engine starts right up, even on the coldest morning, even after sitting for a few days. The engine does not blow smoke or leak fluids, and passed a Virginia emission inspection in August 2013.

The upholstery is in good condition and is without tears, rips stains or marks, except for the side of the driver’s seat, which shows some cracking in the vinyl (see picture). The carpeting is in good shape (no rips, tears or stains) and there are 2 sets of floor mats (one set is rubber, one set is carpet like), but the floor mats are in worn condition (not shown in the photos). The rear seat folds forward for more cargo room, and this feature works correctly.

The Jeep is equipped with a trailer hitch and wiring to connect to the trailer (shown in the photos). The Jeep was used to haul a canoe, and the hitch was never overloaded. The after-market CD receiver includes the wiring to connect an amp (wiring includes: R/L audio, power and turn-on connections). An amp can be installed in the rear of the vehicle and the head unit can be set to drive a sub or full range amplification system. The CD receiver includes a remote control and includes various aux. connections on the front and back of the receiver. The CD receiver is connected to the built in speakers in the front doors and rear roof.

The Jeep’s paint is in good condition for a 15 year-old vehicle. There are some minor dings and scratches, and there is some minor rust. The pictures were taken right after a wash, and you can see the paint is still shinny. The car was garage kept for the first 10 years of life, and this was driven primarily as a commuter car to and from work.

The Jeep was a gift from an Aunt and Uncle for my son on his 16th birthday in August 2013. The Aunt and Uncle where the original owners of the car, and was purchased by them in February 1999. The Jeep was occasionally used for travel with dogs, and although I cannot detect a pet smell, my son’s allergies were triggered, so the Jeep will not work out for him and we are selling it to buy something else. People with allergies may want check it out before bidding. The Jeep also has a low gas mileage, about 16-18 MPG, but the engine has not been tuned-up in a while, which might make a difference. Not all of the accessories function 100%. The power window switch at the driver’s door works correctly, but the window switches at the other doors operate intermittently. The power lock system does not lock the rear driver’s side door – the lock is gummed up and requires a lot of force to operate. It can be worked by hand with a lot of force. The remote lock fob stopped working when it got cold in October. I have changed the battery in the fob, but it does not work. The fob will be included in the auction. The AC needs to be recharged – we were told that the AC system has a slow leak and when charged up in the spring, it would last all summer. In August 2013 there was not any cold air. The heater blows nice and hot. The cruise control would not engage.

In August 2013, I needed to buy 4 new tires and have some front end suspension work done to get the Jeep to pass inspection in Virginia. My investment was $1200, which is where the auction starts. The mechanic recommended having rear suspension work done, as the original shocks were still on the car. I did not have rear suspension work done. The tires have about 500 miles on them, but they are all-season highway tires. If you are into 4-wheeling, you may want to consider different tires. The cold snap we had last week caused the windshield of the Jeep to crack. The crack is about 15 inches long and the windshield may need to be replaced depending on your state’s inspection requirements (see the pictures). Since this happened less than a week ago, I cannot say crack movement is complete. The first day it got a little bigger, but has not expanded since.

The Jeep has never let me down. It always starts up, runs strong and gets me where I need to go. I have been driving it as a commuter vehicle since August. The Jeep would be fine for a long distance drive as Aunt Betsy’s son delivered the Jeep to us after an 800 mile road trip.

Stellantis announces ‘Circular Economy’ business to drive revenue, decarbonization

Tue, Oct 11 2022

Stellantis has already announced its plans to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2038. Today, the automaker has announced a new business unit to help it reach that goal while generating 2 billion euros per year in revenue by 2030. The “Circular Economy” business will help make revenue less dependent on finite, rare and ecologically problematic materials. The Circular Economy model features what Stellantis calls a “4R” strategy, comprising remanufacturing, repair, reuse and recycling. The goal is to make materials last as long as they can, reducing reliance on the acquisition of those precious new materials in the future by returning them to the business loop when theyÂ’ve reached the end of their first life. Through these processes, Stellantis says it can save up to 80% raw material and 50% energy compared to manufacturing a new part. Remanufacturing, or “reman” in Stellantis shorthand, means dismantling, cleaning and rebuilding parts to OEM spec. Nearly 12,000 remanufactured parts are available for customers to purchase. Some remanufacturing is done in-house, and some with partners and through joint ventures. Repair is pretty obvious — fixing parts to put back into vehicles. This also consists of reconditioning, to make a vehicle feel like new. Stellantis boasts 21 “e-repair” centers for repairing electric vehicle batteries.  Reuse refers to parts still in good condition from end-of-life vehicles sold as-is. Stellantis says it has 4.5 million multi-brand parts in inventory. These are sold in 155 countries through the B-Parts e-commerce platform. Reuse also refers second-life options, such as using batteries outside of automotive purposes. Recycling involves dismantling parts and scraps back into raw material form that is then looped back into the manufacturing process. Stellantis says it has collected 1 million parts for recycling in the past six months. Recycling doesnÂ’t get counted in that aforementioned 2 billion euros of revenue, but it does save the company money on acquisition of raw materials. As for batteries, specifically, Stellantis expects this recycling business to ramp up after 2030, when the packs currently in service begin to reach the end of their lifecycle. Stellantis will use its new “SUSTAINera” label to denote parts that are offered as part of its Circular Economy business.

FCA recalls 894k total vehicles worldwide in two campaigns

Fri, Oct 30 2015

FCA is recalling a total of 893,698 vehicles worldwide in two campaigns to fix problems with inadvertent airbag deployment, failure of the anti-lock brakes, and stability control systems in the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Liberty, Dodge Journey, and Fiat Freemont. 559,703 of these vehicles are in the US. The larger recall affects 284,089 examples of the 2003 Jeep Liberty and 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and there are also 13,411 of them in Canada, 6,277 in Mexico, and 48,212 outside the NAFTA region. Because of "electrical noise beyond the tolerance of the airbag electronic control module", part of that component can fail, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This can cause the front and side airbags to deploy and the seatbelt pre-tensioners to activate inadvertently. FCA US has seven reports of alleged injuries from this problem. To fix the situation, the Jeeps need their Occupant Restraint Control modules replaced, as well as the front- and side-impact sensors. According to the NHTSA, the replacement parts won't be available until early 2016. Still, FCA US will advise owners about the problem in a letter by the end of December and will send a second notification when the components are ready. The second campaign affects 275,614 examples of the 2012-2015 Dodge Journey in the US; plus 78,148 of them in Canada, 36,471 in Mexico, and 151,476 left-hand drive units outside of NAFTA where it's sold as the Fiat Freemont. On these vehicles, water intrusion can disable the anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control, although a warning light often illuminates when this issue occurs, and the problem doesn't affect regular braking. There are also no reports of injuries or accidents. To fix the issue, dealers will seal the ABS wiring harness and will replace any already affected components as necessary, like the ABS module or the headlamp and dashboard wiring harness. Statement: Occupant Restraint Control Modules October 30, 2015 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US LLC is voluntarily recalling an estimated 284,089 older-model SUVs in the U.S. to replace their Occupant Restraint Control (ORC) modules and front and/or side-impact sensors, as required. Within this vehicle population, FCA US became aware of seven injuries caused by inadvertent air-bag deployments and advised NHTSA accordingly. The affected vehicles are not equipped with Takata Corp. air-bags. The Company is unaware of any related accidents.

Jeep Cherokee faces on-sale delay

Sat, 23 Mar 2013

A report in The Wall Street Journal looks at some of the obstacles to the 2014 Jeep Cherokee that go beyond its mootable yet "very contemporary" looks, almost all of them based on Fiat's financial position. Starting with that sheetmetal, in defense of it SRT president Ralph Gilles and Jeep design head Mark Allen said they wanted to "make sure the design still looks modern five years from now."
The WSJ piece doesn't cite longevity as a factor, instead saying that its features originated in a design for an Alfa Romeo, the transformation into a Jeep design meant allowing Chrysler get it to market more quickly and save "hundreds of millions of dollars" in engineering.
The need for Fiat to save money while it weathers the European situation has cut budgets for development, engineering and the pace of retooling the Toledo, Ohio plant to build the Cherokee. In a familiar case of snowballing at work, among the effects will be pushing back the Cherokee's volume sales date and delaying updates to some of Chrysler's other products.
