Jaguar Land Rover names ousted Renault boss as new CEO
Tue, Jul 28 2020LONDON — Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has picked ousted Renault boss Thierry Bollore as its next chief executive, with a mission to return Britain's biggest carmaker to profit after a big hit from the COVID-19 pandemic. Bollore took over at Renault in January 2019 after the fall of Carlos Ghosn, but was always viewed as close to the French carmaker's longtime boss and was pushed out in October when the company was looking for a fresh start. Bollore will take over at JLR on Sept. 10, replacing Ralf Speth, whose tenure ends after more than 10 years. "It will be my privilege to lead this fantastic company through what continues to be the most testing time of our generation," Bollore said in a statement on Tuesday. JLR was hit this year first by disruption to sales in China and then by lockdowns across Europe and North America as the COVID-19 outbreak spread around the globe. In 2019, it cut jobs to address tumbling diesel sales, which helped it return to profit. But as the pandemic struck, it slumped to a pretax loss of 422 million pounds ($545 million) for the year ended March 31, 2020. The company has already taken steps to tackle the crisis, including agreeing to a loan facility of around $700 million with lenders in China and further staff reductions. JLR is also in talks with the British government over potential support, according to media reports. Bollore takes over a business that built just over 500,000 cars in 2019/20. He faces a number of tasks, including how to handle the Jaguar brand, which underperforms the Land Rover marque, how quickly to electrify its lineup and a potential hit from Brexit if trade barriers are imposed. JLR has a partnership with BMW on electrification, and parent company Tata Motors recently recommitted to the company. "Tata Group recognizes and values Jaguar Land Rover's future potential highly," said JLR Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran earlier this month. "That is why this company is central to our global automotive presence – a presence that we intend to develop for years to come." Jaguar F-Type Coupe is here, will debut on stage in LA
Tue, 05 Nov 2013When Jaguar previewed its new sportscar two years ago with the C-X16 concept, it showed a coupe form. But when the car hit production as the F-Type, it rolled out in roadster form only. Not that we're complaining, but we all knew it wouldn't be long before Coventry revealed the production coupe, and that's just what it's doing at this month's LA Auto Show.
Jaguar hasn't given us much to go on yet - just a single shot of the vehicle from above and nothing in the way of technical details - but we all know the drill. The F-Type Coupe will essentially be the same as the existing roadster, only with a fixed roof - with a large glass panel, mind you, to let plenty of light in and keep the cabin from feeling markedly more claustrophobic than the open-top version.
That ought to make it a little lighter (though not much) and a little stiffer, but otherwise we can expect more or less the same specs as the convertible. We'll have to wait until the evening of November 19 to know for sure, though, so watch this space for more.
Jaguar Land Rover to skip 2016 Detroit Auto Show
Mon, Nov 23 2015Jaguar Land Rover won't attend the 2016 Detroit Auto Show in January because the automaker will shift its focus to other international shows instead, the company confirmed to Autoblog. "Following a review of our global consumer engagement program, the decision has been made not to exhibit at the Detroit show in 2016," said a company spokesperson told Autoblog. The story was first reported by Automotive News. JLR will continue to attend other US auto shows in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles; plus those abroad in Geneva, Frankfurt, Paris, Beijing, and Shanghai. "We recognize that the Detroit show is a world-class Tier 1 auto show, however, we have had to make this decision to sharpen our focus as indicated," the spokesperson said. Detroit Auto Show PR Manager Max Muncey told Autoblog that the organizers already knew JLR wouldn't be there. "We are in discussions with other automakers to fill that spot," he said about using the open space. The show expects 70 percent of the floor plan in 2016 to be different from last year. The automaker used the 2015 Detroit Auto Show to announce diesel versions for several models, and it revealed the name for the Jaguar F-Pace there. JLR reportedly now has a plan to cut the equivalent of $6.8 billion in costs without firing workers and increase production to a million annual deliveries by the end of the decade. Related Video:
