Jaguar Land Rover names ousted Renault boss as new CEO

LONDON — Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has picked ousted Renault boss Thierry Bollore as its next chief executive, with a mission to return Britain's biggest carmaker to profit after a big hit from the COVID-19 pandemic. Bollore took over at Renault in January 2019 after the fall of Carlos Ghosn, but was always viewed as close to the French carmaker's longtime boss and was pushed out in October when the company was looking for a fresh start. Bollore will take over at JLR on Sept. 10, replacing Ralf Speth, whose tenure ends after more than 10 years. "It will be my privilege to lead this fantastic company through what continues to be the most testing time of our generation," Bollore said in a statement on Tuesday. JLR was hit this year first by disruption to sales in China and then by lockdowns across Europe and North America as the COVID-19 outbreak spread around the globe. In 2019, it cut jobs to address tumbling diesel sales, which helped it return to profit. But as the pandemic struck, it slumped to a pretax loss of 422 million pounds ($545 million) for the year ended March 31, 2020. The company has already taken steps to tackle the crisis, including agreeing to a loan facility of around $700 million with lenders in China and further staff reductions. JLR is also in talks with the British government over potential support, according to media reports. Bollore takes over a business that built just over 500,000 cars in 2019/20. He faces a number of tasks, including how to handle the Jaguar brand, which underperforms the Land Rover marque, how quickly to electrify its lineup and a potential hit from Brexit if trade barriers are imposed. JLR has a partnership with BMW on electrification, and parent company Tata Motors recently recommitted to the company. "Tata Group recognizes and values Jaguar Land Rover's future potential highly," said JLR Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran earlier this month. "That is why this company is central to our global automotive presence – a presence that we intend to develop for years to come." 'New' continuation Jaguar XKSS to debut in November in LA

Jaguar announced on Tuesday two important debuts for Jaguar Classic's continuation models, the Lightweight Jaguar E-Type and the new XKSS. In November, the Jaguar XKSS continuation model will make its debut in California to coincide with this year's LA Auto Show. The company revealed the plan to build nine of these cars a few months ago in order to complete the original production run. That run began in 1957 when Jaguar began building road legal versions of unsold D-Type race cars. However, production stopped short when a fire at the Browns Lane factory destroyed the remaining cars. Jaguar explained that the company will use what they learned from developing the Lightweight E-Type continuation series, and Jaguar Classic employees will build these XKSS models to the original specifications. View 46 Photos In addition to the XKSS public reveal, the 2015 Jaguar Lightweight E-Type will soon make its competition debut. The car in particular is chassis number 15, one of the six continuation cars, and it will compete in the Jaguar Classic Challenge race on July 9 at this year's Le Mans Classic. Another automotive icon will be behind the wheel of this iconic sports car. Top Gear presenter and automotive journalist Chris Harris will pilot the E-Type at Circuit de la Sarthe alongside an array of other vintage Jaguar race cars. Like the XKSS continuation cars, the Lightweight E-Types were also built to finish their respective production run. And although these continuation cars are only a couple of years old, they are identical to the originals and are thus FIA compliant for historic racing. Related Video:

Seven-figure cars highlight day one of RM's Monterey auction

RM Auctions is one of several houses holding auctions during the Monterey weekend, and Friday night's festivities got quite pricey. Seven-figure vehicles were not at all uncommon during the first day of the two-day event, with the 1953 Ferrari 375 MM Spider, seen above, crossing the block for $9,075,000.
Other big earners included a pair of rare Ferraris, a 1950 166 MM Barchetta and a 1955 750 Monza Spider, which took $3,080,000 and $4,070,000, respectively. Outside of the red Italians, a 1939 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special captured $7,480,000 while a stunning, color-appropriate 1955 Jaguar D-Type took $3,850,000. Thought it seems impossible, tonight's auction is expected to see even more high-dollar action. The winner of the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours, a 1928 Mercedes-Benz 680S Torpedo Roadster is expected to command over $10 million. Also crossing the block will be a car we reported on a few weeks back - a supremely rare 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spyder. One of only 10 in the world, it's expected to take anywhere from $14 to $17 million when it hits the stage tonight.
