History: The magic of a name: Jaguar. Since the company started out as the Swallow Sidecar Company and later changed it's name to Jaguar after the war the automobiles they produced were the vision of a single man: Sir William Lyons. Books have been written about the company and races have been won. Sir William Lyons believed that the mystique his cars possessed were about Grace Pace and Space. New money might go for the BMW or Lexus but old money will always go for the Jag.

My Auction:
I will attempt to describe this fine automobile to the best of my ability. All used cars have flaws, especially 22 year old ones so please be realistic in your expectations. I will point out anything that stands out or that you can't see in the pictures as I believe anyone who doesn't isn't being thorough with their auction. Please ask all questions BEFORE you bid. Please view the link to over 150 additional pictures I have posted on flickr.com before you bid, some of them have captions and I want you to know exactly what you are getting. Please read my entire auction carefully BEFORE you bid. Also please be respectful of my auction, these cost real money that I have to work hard for just like you do. Please make sure you have the money in place BEFORE you bid and that you have asked you significant other or whoever you need permission from to purchase an automobile before you bid. I will not cancel your bid for any reason or excuse you give me so if you are one of those guys please don't bid on my auction. Thanks and good luck bidding!

Link to over 150 pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/103399442@N02/ If you click on the individual photos they will get larger. Next click on the diagonal arrows icon that is second from the right. This will supersize the pictures and you can now use the left and right arrows on either side of the screen to scroll through the pictures. Also before you supersize the photos scroll through them and you can see the captions this way.

Exterior Condition: This big cat is finished in beautiful Light Oyster metallic. The paint is as smooth as glass and shines like a mirror. If you run your hand across it, it has that soft feeling just like a new car in the showroom. There are no swirl marks in the paint, it has a deep shine. The leaper hood ornament was stolen at one point so there is a little damage around it shown in the picture I point to with my finger. The top of the left front fender has an area with a little discoloration to the paint that I point to in one of the photos also. Overall the car is amazingly rust free. There are a couple tiny and I do mean tiny rust bubbles I point to in the pictures. All of the door jambs are super clean and rust free. All of the glass is crack and chip free. The chrome is shiny. All of the plastic trim on the bumpers looks terrific. I would say the exterior appearance of this car is outstanding and you would be proud to take it to a British car show today.

Interior Condition: This being the Vanden Plas model you are talking top of the line luxury. This is the most expensive XJ6 they made that year at over $50,000 new. It has lovely Connolly leather hides finished in Doeskin with contrasting brown piping. The only place the interior can reasonably be faulted is the drivers seat. It has some seam separation on the bottom cushion and a hole in the outer bolster, both easily fixed by a good upholstery shop. The passenger seat looks outstanding and the back seats look like it has never been sat in. And speaking of the back seat what a splendid place to motor. This is the long wheel base model and it has the fold out picnic trays in the seat backs and the rear window sunshades. The carpets look new with no stains. Everything in the interior is covered in leather. The wood in the Vanden Plas has a lovely inlay. The front seats are heated for those cold mornings.

Mechanically: This XJ6 runs and drives great! The engine just purrs and is very quiet. This is one of the smoothest cars I have ever driven. It is like all of the controls are coated in thick syrup. No grittyness here. Step on the gas and zoom! Off it goes, this car is very fast. The transmission shifts as it should and the brakes feel terrific. It does not pulsate or anything when you come to a stop. The car tracks straight and true down the road. The oil was just changed a few hundred miles ago. There are no warning lights illuminated on the dash. Every single button and switch works as it should. The A/C blows cold and the heat is hot. The car has new tires. I can only find two things wrong with the car:

1. The passenger side rear window does not go down. It makes a clicking noise when you hit either button but nothing happens. All the other windows and sunroof work fine.

2. There is a lockout on the gearshift that does not allow you to start the car when it is in gear. About once in every twenty times or so when you go to start the car you have to wiggle the gear shift a little because the car thinks it is in gear even though it is in park. It will always start when you wiggle it and this does not happen often. Most of the time it just starts right up without having to wiggle the gear shift. I think the contact on the switch needs to be cleaned.

Thats it, just try finding another XJ6 that is this trouble free. This car is a pleasure to drive and people go nuts for it wherever I go.

European automakers gear up for Brazilian production

Mon, 07 Oct 2013

Brazil is the place to be, apparently. Toyota has been investing in the South American country, as has BMW, which announced a $261 million investment in October 2012, on the heels of an Audi factory announcement in San José Chiapa. The high-end immigration is only set to continue, as Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar-Land Rover have both announced plans to set up manufacturing operations there.
Mercedes is the big news here, as its new facility will see the German manufacturer invest 170-million euros for production of its next-generation C-Class and upcoming GLA-Class. "Brazil is an important future market. With our local production we accept the challenge and take on the competition," noted Andreas Renschler, Management Board member for Production and Procurement at Mercedes-Benz Cars and Mercedes-Benz Vans. Production is expected to begin by 2016.
Jaguar-Land Rover, meanwhile, isn't so concrete in its plans. The news of its investment in South America comes from a job posting for a plant quality manager in Brazil that was picked up by the UK's AutoCar. "Portuguese language skills will be definite advantage" for interested candidates, according to the job listing. The want ad follows on the heels of remarks by Jaguar Land Rover's Dr. Ralph Speth, who said there are "very intensive discussions" with Brazil's government. Unlike Mercedes, there's no mention of which vehicles will be produced in South America, although AutoCar thinks the Freelander, sold in the US as the LR2, is a leading contender.

London skyscraper caught melting cars

Tue, 03 Sep 2013

A new skyscraper under construction in London is apparently to blame for some mysteriously melting car parts on the city's surrounding streets. The 37-story building at 20 Fenchurch Street, nicknamed the "Walkie Talkie" for how it looks, features a convex side of glass windows that apparently concentrates the sun's rays like a kid with a magnifying glass. Instead of smiting ants, however, the building was caught focusing its sun-sourced laser death beam on an innocent Jaguar XJ parked on Eastcheap street. The intense heat managed to melt a sideview mirror, plastic C-pillar cover and Jaguar emblem (scroll down for an image of the damage).
Fortunately, the construction company, Land Securities, had some scruples and reportedly left a note on the car for its owner reading "Your car's buckled, could you give us a call?" They've also since apologized and agreed to pay for the £946 done - about $1,500 - in damages by their blazing hot building. A joint statement with the Canary Wharf district in which the building's located was also released. In it, the developer acknowledges concerns about the reflected light and says it's looking into the matter. The city has also decided to close a few parking bays that could be in the building's line of fire, so to speak, until a solution can be engineered. Since news of the melting Jag broke, other vehicle owners have also come forward claiming the building, re-nicknamed the "Walkie Scorchie," has damaged their cars, as well.
This isn't the first shiny-new-building-attacks-cars story we've heard - architect Frank Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles was built amidst concern that its polished ribbons of stainless steel were blinding motorists and causing accidents, along with raising the temperatures of nearby buildings with its reflected light. The building's surfaces were later given a matte polish.

Jaguar Land Rover gets to work on new university R&D center

Fri, Mar 20 2015

Jaguar Land Rover has a raft of new products in the pipeline, from the new Defender to the next-generation XF sedan. But new product isn't the only thing the British automaker is investing in: it's also opening new facilities around the world, including what it's calling the National Automotive Innovation Centre back home in the UK. Based at the University of Warwick, the new $220-million R&D center is the result of a joint effort between JLR, its parent company Tata, the manufacturing arm of the university and the British government. The facility will bring together professionals from the automaker as well as its suppliers with academics to encourage, as the name suggests, innovation in the automotive sector. Its 355,000 square feet are earmarked to become the hub for Jaguar Land Rover's advanced research activities, including "workshops, laboratories, virtual engineering suites and advanced powertrain facilities, equipped to enable a full range of design, visualisation and prototyping activities." The cornerstore was just laid in a ceremony this week, but the facility isn't due to open until the Spring of 2017 when it will encompass some 1,000 employees, including 600 relocated by JLR to the new location from other sites in the UK.
