Petrolicious examines a very special Jaguar C-Type

There are rare Jaguars, and then there's this stunning C-Type Lightweight Le Mans. Built in response to the dominance of the Mercedes-Benz 300SL at the 1952 24 Hours of Le Mans, Jaguar made only three C-Types for 1953 and managed to capture first, second, and fourth. These cars featured four-wheel disc brakes – a rarity at the time even in endurance racing – and a lighter aluminum body. The two SU carburetors were swapped out for three Webers, meaning more power and, according to RM Sotheby's David Swig, better throttle response. Swig would know. In the latest video from Petrolicious, he takes the fourth-place C-Type for a ride, giving us a look at the sleek open-roof racer in action, while our ears enjoy the delicious sound of the 3.4-liter, twin-cam straight-six. "What I love about these cars is how communicative they are on the road," Swig told Petrolicious. "How when you're going through a corner, you feel in the seat of your pants and through the steering wheel every little movement, every little pebble that you drive over." Beyond the driving experience, there's something to be said of the historical seat Swig is occupying. "No less than five Le Mans-winning drivers of this period have sat behind the wheel of this car," Swig said, "which almost give you goosebumps." Should you have the money, you can actually put this iconic racing Jaguar in your garage. RM Sotheby's will offer it for auction as part of its glitzy Monterey Car Week event next month. Jaguar F-Pace SUV teased on YouTube [UPDATE]

UPDATE: Stuart Schorr, Jaguar Land Rover North America's VP of communications, reached out and explained that the Detroit section of the F-Pace video was recycled from the car's confirmation announcement at the 2015 North American International Auto Show, shown here. "There is 100 percent no subliminal message and Frankfurt is the debut location," Schorr told Autoblog. The story has been edited to reflect this information. With the Jaguar F-Pace slated to debut in less than 90 days, at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, the teasers are starting to ramp up. That means videos like this, featuring Jaguar design master Ian Callum, which give us short, sweet peeks at the British brand's very first crossover. The big teasers come in the form of Callum's drawings of the F-Pace, combined with short clips of its headlights and taillights as it zooms around the streets of downtown Detroit. That said, none of the images shown are so dramatically different from the C-X17 Concept, the vehicle that previewed the production model and makes an appearance here. We aren't really sure why the Motor City features in the teaser, considering the F-Pace is being unveiled in Germany, but one of the final sequences sees a set of taillights streak past Cobo Center, home of the annual Detroit Auto Show. It's a weird decision to be sure, and leaves us wondering just how much truth there is to reports of the Frankfurt debut. Jaguar crossover won't be based on Evoque or have off-road chops

Jaguar's long-rumored crossover won't be built on the same platform as the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, says the Australian site Car Advice. The future of the new CUV remains uncertain, but if Jaguar does dip its toes into the SUV/crossover pool, though, the new vehicle will likely be a car-based soft roader, lacking (or perhaps more appropriately, not needing) the off-road-engineered chops inherent in Land Rover's small CUV platform.
Jaguar product planner Steven De Ploey explained to Car Advice, "There's many groups around the world [platform sharing] - obviously Volkswagen Group is doing it all the time - but I think we have to be careful. He added, "Jaguar is something quite different... It's about capability, but very much on-road focused capability." That seems to gel with our suspicions that the XQ, as it's expected to be called, will share its platform with an upcoming small Jaguar sedan, the oft-rumored X-Type successor.
Still, we'd recommend taking any mention of a Jaguar crossover with a grain of salt. Based on many of the (quite compelling) statements made by De Ploey against a Jag crossover and previous statements made by Jag's design boss, Ian Callum, the case against a leaper-bearing crossover seems strong. If a high-rider were to arrive from Jaguar, though, the article insinuates that it'd be more in line with the BMW X6 or upcoming X4 - sort of a coupe-based crossover. Like we said, grain of salt. If a Jag crossover is going to arrive soon, the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show is the most likely locale for its debut. We'll find out in a few weeks.
