Intro:

For your consideration is this 1970 Jaguar E-Type fix head coupe (two seater) Series 2 (S2) with manual transmission.  It is in its original specification and is numbers matching.  This E-type was a nice original driver that traveled 85,000 miles, then throughout 2011-2012 received $22,000+ worth of professional mechanical and cosmetic refurbishment (detailed receipt included).  This is an absolutely beautiful, stunning, and eye catching vehicle that is extremely pleasant to drive and is ready for the road.  It retains its very uncommon original paint color, dark blue, and gray interior.  Only about 3,000 Series 2 fix head coupes were brought to the United States and are a great value compared to earlier models and convertible E-Types.  There are 130+ photographs, 6+ minutes of high definition video, and a detailed description below for you to get a better idea about this E-Type’s condition.

Exterior:

The finish on this E-Type is the original dark blue color.  The body work was professionally performed in 2011.  The quality of the finish/body work is of VERY presentable driver quality but not $100,000+ Concours quality.  Notice in the pictures and video clips that the finish has beautifully deep and detailed reflections.  The dark blue has an excellent tone and pops out on sunny days.  The clearcoat was wet sanded/flat sanded with 2000 grit sandpaper to achieve the mirror like finish it currently has.  From about five feet away, the finish on this E-Type looks nearly perfect.  When a very detailed enthusiast knowledgeable about paint work sticks their nose up close to it, some detailed imperfections can be noticed.  The average car person or car show spectator generally would not notice these imperfections unless they were pointed out.  I would like to point these out because as stated, this a VERY presentable and attractive driver that can be brought to shows but not a Concours 100 point winning show car.  This E-Type has of course been buffed with compound, polished, and hand waxed since being wet sanded but some extremely light clearcoat scratches from the 2000 grit sandpaper can be seen on a few areas when the sun is out full force and one bends down close to the body and at just the right angle.  It is too minor and limited to show up in the photographs.  There are a few limited/contained areas of needle tip size or smaller white specks in the paint (ex: some spots on roof, some spots on cowl).  It is not over the whole car or on every body panel.  It is limited and did not even show up in the photographs.  The hood, doors, and hatch were painted on a different day than the body of the car thus resulting in a very slight and subtle difference in the tint of blue.  When it is a perfectly sunny day, the difference in tint is very faint, and can be noticed only on certain views of the car, more so when looking for it, and also more so by detailed enthusiasts.  I showed off the E-Type at a British car show and no one noticed unless I pointed it out to them.  When it is not perfectly sunny, it generally cannot be seen and is minor enough to not show in the photographs.   There are a few other minor knicks, scratches, and etcetera here and there that generally are not seen from five feet away.  Other than that, the finish is absolutely stunning.  The paint lacks texture, is quite smooth, and very reflective.  Notice the quality of the reflections on the different body panels in the photographs with the Jaguar book next to the body.  When kneeling down and looking down the side of the body, it is very straight and smooth, not wavy.  This E-Type looks impressive and the high gloss, smooth, and straight dark blue aids the visual appeal.  This E-Type stands out from the reds, blacks, silvers, greens, and other much more common colors.  Overall, VERY presentable paint.

The rest of the exterior is presentable as well.  As stated, the body panels are all impressively straight.  They are not wavy. I am not able to find a ding on the body.  No evidence or records of significant damage ever.  The panels were stripped to bare steel prior to the paintwork being performed.  The body/VIN is numbers matching.  Gaps throughout are great, with the driver door being slightly pushed out due to new weatherstripping which should compress over time.  The passenger door jamb still needs the vertical weatherstripping piece ($50).  Lenses overall are nice with Lucas headlamps units up front.  Chrome/trim throughout is presentable, shines, and is reflective, almost perfect looking from five or so feet away, but with close inspection on some of it, it shows typical wear such as pitting and scratches.  Hatch window trim is present but not installed.  Glass throughout overall is good, some minor wear, and some scratches on the driver glass as well as other minor scratches on the upper part of the windscreen.  It was not significant enough to show up in the photos.  None of the glass has any cracks or significant stone impacts.  The chrome wire wheels look absolutely beautiful and show some typical aging/oxidation.  The redline tires are new and contrast very nicely from the dark blue.  The underbody and engine bay is not Concours clean but is impressive.  Those areas have been refurbished with cleaning, paint, and numerous part replacement throughout.  Underside of the hood sheet metal also is great.  All in all, the exterior of this E-Type collectively is very presentable and visually appealing.

Interior:

The interior of this E-Type is mostly original, overall complete, and shows some patina.  The dashboard is very nice and would not need much attention.  The pad does not have any cracking, rips, or other issues.  Gauges overall look good.  Some touch up here and there could be in order like on the choke knob or enjoy as is.  Steering wheel is original wood and has received some repair.  Headliner shows age, has some markings, but is not drooping.  The driver seat shows some wear.  The passenger seat shows more wear and has some cracking/separation.  Head rests are present and fine.  Seat belts are present and are fine.  Door panels are original and have some scarring due to the window cranks hitting them.  Hatch area material shows typical wear to be expected.  The interior overall is presentable and shows expected patina for having traveled 86,000 miles.  It does not distract from the beautiful exterior of the vehicle but a future owner may wish to refurbish the interior.  Excellent complete interior kits can be purchased from many different sources like www.osji.com and cost about $3,200.  I personally would just enjoy the E-type as it is but a future owner may opt for such interior work being done and this has been considered in the value of this vehicle.

Mechanical:

This E-Type is impressive mechanically and well sorted.  This was a nicely running and driving vehicle prior to receiving the recent refurbishment, not some sort of barn find.  It has received about $15,000 worth of mechanical refurbishment since 2011.  I have a four page itemized receipt with totals and dates scanned and pictured.  There are some mechanical details that can still be worked out like with any 40+ year old car but the major important aspects in many of the different systems (suspension, brakes, engine, cooling, etc.) are taken care of resulting in this being a very fun to drive vehicle.  Some of the significant recent work includes:

-New stainless steel exhaust, new manifold studs

-New clutch, new slave cylinder, new reservoir

-Rebuilt carbs

-Engine serviced, cleaned, and painted, new choke cables, new water pump

-Starter rebuilt

-Radiator reconditioned, new fans

-New ball joints

-New battery, cables, and tray

-New brake master cylinder, front brake rotors, some brake hose replacement

-New tires and tubes

-New u-joints

-Rear hubs: One hub rebuilt, one replaced

-Fluids throughout

As stated, there are a few items that could still be sorted.  The tachometer works intermittently, with it functioning less often than not.  A British car needs to drip something, and this one drips from what looks like what be the rear seal of the transmission.  It is not so extensive to the point that the car should not be driven.  With the car sitting, it will leave about a 50 cent piece diameter size of gear lube underneath it and will drip on the exhaust.  A temporary heat shield could remedy that.  This E-Type does have factory A/C which is known to be somewhat useless.  The compressor and other under-hood parts are supposed to currently be en-route via the mail to me as they were left at the shop where the car was refurbished.  If and when I do receive those parts, I will ship them at my expense to the new owner if received after the E-type is picked up if the new owner wants them.  Other than those items, I am unable to think of what else could or should be done.  Those involved in the classic car hobby know the above are pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of the vehicle.

One of the sweetest parts of the E-Type is its engine.  The engine is numbers matching to the car (7R9274-9).  I hate to say it as it is an un-intended pun, but this 4.2L inline six cylinder just purrs.  It starts up cold most often on the first try, otherwise usually the second.  It has a stable idle without surging or sputtering.  The valvetrain and other internals sound silky smooth.  It stays strong at the proper temperature, even on 90+ degree days.  Extremely excellent oil pressure.  Excellent throttle response throughout the RPM range.  The 4.2L offers gobs of torque down low to cruise all day in 4th gear and revs strong and smooth through the RPM range if more spirited driving is in order.  Absolutely no issues noticed in regards to the engine.  The dual overhead cam engine itself sounds beautiful as does the note from the stainless steel dual exhaust.  Notice in the video clip how the engine purrs real nice and smooth from idle to driving.  The gearbox is the original four speed unit and it shifts very sweetly.  It is nice and tight.  Absolutely no grinding/synchro issues whether it is warmed up or not.  Reverse is fine as well.  Driveshaft, differential, axels, and hubs are good to go as well with no issues noticed.  Steering system is fine.  Suspension overall is very compliant and comfortable.  It rides quite smooth and confidently.  Tires are brand new which help aid driving enjoyment as well.  The brakes offer excellent feedback and are the original four disc system all around.  No rotor warp, leaking, or other issues noticed with the braking system.  Odometer works and reads 86,000 miles.  Headlights, turn signals, brake lights, wipers, fuel gauge, and etc. work as well.

 Conclusion:

The Jaguar E-Type is a very special vehicle.  The fix head six cylinder two seater coupes are considered by many to be the most attractive vehicles ever produced in the world.  In the context of when these vehicles were produced, E-Types also offered impressive technology and performance compared to its competitors.  The engine is a big, torquey, and high horsepower for a little sports car, dual overhead cam 4.2L inline six.  Fully independent suspension with disc brakes at every corner was standard.  The Jaguar E-Type was a great value compared to other options back in the day (Aston Martin, Maserati, Ferrari, Austin Healey, Porsche) and the Series 2 E-Type holds true to that right now today as well.  These cars are so pleasant to drive.  The sound the engine makes is intoxicating.  The view from the cockpit of the power bulge and rounded fenders makes one feel like they are in something very special.  And of course, it is the type of car that when parked in the garage, one can just sit and stare at.  Needless to say, it receives tons of positive attention and from all ages (ex: Yesterday while out for a cruise and ending up behind a brand new Aston Martin, the driver stopped me to compliment the E-Type).

This numbers matching E-Type offered for your consideration is an extremely clean and presentable example that is ready to be driven and should be driven.  Its finish shines beautifully and is a very uncommon, complimentary, and eye catching color.  This E-Type has been well sorted mechanically and can be enjoyed as is or with some more effort be brought up to another level.  With consideration for this E-type’s originality, excellent mechanical condition, and beautiful cosmetic condition, I have tried to set the asking price fairly at $48,500.  Serious buyers are welcome to contact me with any questions.  Preferred calls are between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM central time.  Clean title.  Fuel tank is full and car is clean, ready for its next caretaker.

Jaguar to reveal small sedan at Paris show

Wed, 11 Dec 2013

Small sedans are big business for luxury automakers. The C-Class is the top seller for Mercedes-Benz, much as the 3 Series is for BMW, but Jaguar has historically missed out on that market. Its last attempt, the X-Type, proved woefully inadequate, and Jaguar hasn't attempted to take on that market again since. But that's all about to change.
Coventry has been working on a new small Jaguar for some time now (using test mules like the one above wearing modified XF body panels), and according to the latest reports coming in from the UK, it will showcase the result of those efforts at the Paris Motor Show next October. The show car will take the form of a pre-production concept that is expected to preview the production version very closely before the final item is unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.
Tipped to be called XS (somewhat appropriately for the brand's smallest model), the new sedan is expected to be the first to use the company's new aluminum platform previewed by the C-X17. Expect styling to follow along similar lines to said crossover concept and the F-Type sportscar, with eventual sedan, wagon and coupe versions to round out the family.

All Jaguars and Land Rovers to get diesel engines... almost

Mon, Jan 12 2015

Virtually all Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles – except the F-Type sports car – will get a diesel engine option in the next three years, the company confirmed Sunday night at an event before the Detroit Auto Show. The aggressive blitz begins this fall, when the 2016 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport will launch with available turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 diesel engines. They will push out 254 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque, while returning fuel economy of up to 28 miles per gallon on the highway. The combined rating in city and highway driving will be 25 mpg. The Rovers will be followed in 2016 by the XE sedan and F-Pace crossover, which will offer the 2.0-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engines, in addition to gasoline units. The diesel-powered XE is expected to get at least 40 mpg on the highway, Jaguar Land Rover North America CEO Joe Eberhardt said. The oil-burners are expected to offer 20-to-30 percent improvements in fuel economy compared with gasoline engines, depending on the vehicle. JLR's announcement comes as gasoline prices have plummeted in the United States, and regular fuel costs about $1 less than a gallon of diesel, according to AAA research. Still, the company is taking the long view, and Eberhardt said diesel engines offer greater performance and range than other options. JLR expects about 20 percent of its customers will opt for diesel engines. "We strongly believe this is what our customers will want, regardless of the fluctuations in gas prices," he said. Autocar compares new Maserati Quattroporte to Jaguar XJ

Mon, 07 Jan 2013

Autocar's Steve Sutcliffe took the 2014 Maserati Quattroporte on a spin along snowy mountain roads to test it for a specific brief: as a limousine for the chauffeured class. It's sporting credentials are impressive: Twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V8, 532 horsepower, 475 pound-feet of torque in casual circumstances that rises to 532 lb-ft in overboost, a 0-to-60 mile-per-hour sprint of 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 191 mph.
However, citing Maserati's desire to not just increase its sales to 50,000-per-annum by 2015, but to sell many more of its cars in China, Sutcliffe wanted to find out if the livery side of the Quattroporte could match its sport sedan side. So after taking the pilot's seat and trying out the sport settings, Sutcliffe hops in back to test out the CEO's seat.
Then he compares the Quattroporte against the long-wheelbase Jaguar XJ with its supercharged V8, a sedan that's 15,000 pounds less expensive than the Maserati. It doesn't take long for him to find that one of them is a clear winner when it comes to transporting VIPs. To find out which one, enjoy the video below.
