2016 Jaguar XE pounces on the Parisian port

It's been about five years since Jaguar discontinued the misguided X-Type and exited the compact luxury sedan market, but today marks the British automaker's re-entry into the segment with the public debut of the all-new XE.
Pitted against the likes of the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the new Jaguar XE is based on an all-new aluminum architecture that will underpin many new felines to follow, and packs a new family of four-cylinder engines. That is, aside from the range-topping XE S pictured above, with the super-six borrowed from the F-Type.
Conservatively styled but elegant and uniquely Jaguar, the XE isn't set to arrive Stateside until 2016. So unless you're planning a trip overseas (with a stop at a Jaguar showroom on the itinerary), our gallery of live shots from the floor of the Paris Motor Show here at the Porte de Versailles may be the best look you'll be getting at Coventry's latest for the next couple of years.

Ian Callum says Jaguar could do new wagon after all

Just the other day we brought you a report from Automotive News Europe that indicated that Jaguar was getting out of the wagon market. Now it turns out that may not actually be the case. Following the ANE report, Jaguar design boss Ian Callum tweeted out that he had been misquoted. "I said there would be no XE Sportbrake," wrote Callum. "Nothing more!" While stopping short of spelling out what the British automaker has in the pipeline, Callum's implication (by process of elimination of other Jaguar models) is that the new XF could still breed a wagon version. The previous XF Sportbrake, which also came in XFR-S performance spec, was only the second wagon Jaguar had ever made. The first was based on the X-Type that preceded the new XE; offering a long-roof version of that new sports sedan is apparently off the table, but even with the new F-Pace crossover ostensibly filling the role, a new XF Sportbrake could yet become a reality. Of course none of that means that such a wagon would make its way to North America. But we take a great deal of stock in what Callum has to say on the subject, seeing as how he designed every one of the models in question. The X-Type Sportwagon was offered Stateside, however the XF Sportbrake never was, and in addition the F-Pace promises to be a big player for the automaker on this side of the Atlantic. Jaguar confirms XE reveal for September 8

Jaguar has a whole raft of new products in the pipeline, from the long-awaited replacement for the XF mid-size sedan and a likely XJ-based replacement for the XK coupe and convertible to the production version of its C-X17 crossover concept. But arguably the most important will be the all-new XE, a compact sports sedan pointed squarely at the BMW 3 Series - a market segment which Jaguar last nipped at with the regrettable X-Type, one which it is now committed to tackling head on.
The British automaker has been trickling out a steady stream of details on its upcoming XE, from the initial announcement in March to the reveal of the disguised prototype in May and most recently the details released just last week of the new Ingenium engine family that will provide its motivation. Now Jaguar has confirmed the XE reveal timeframe and some more salient details of its chassis.
Set to be unveiled in London on September 8, the XE will reach European showrooms in 2015 and our shores in 2016. That's when buyers will be able to get their hands on what Jaguar is already characterizing as "a true driver's car; one that redefines the concept of the sports sedan."
