Jaguar readying a pop-top F-Type Coupe? [w/poll]

Typically convertibles are spun off of coupes, but sometimes it goes the other way. Like the Porsche Cayman that was based on the Boxster, the Lotus Exige spun off of the Elise, and the Jaguar F-Type, which arrived as a roadster before the coupe debuted. But if the latest reports are to be believed, Jaguar could be planning something in between.
According to Auto Express (which has, mind you, been known to stretch the rumors out some), Jaguar is toying with the idea of offering a partial convertible version of the F-Type - something Porsche would call a Targa (and which we would too if Stuttgart weren't so litigiously protective of the name). The additional roof configuration would give the F-Type three body-styles, giving its customers more choices.
It wouldn't be the only sports car to offer three roof options: There's the Porsche 911, of course. Ferrari once offered GTB, GTS and Spider versions of the 348 and 355. The Chevy Corvette has been offered in all three forms, as was the Pontiac Solstice many moons ago. But that kind of variety in roof configurations has become scarce. Ian Callum says Jaguar could do new wagon after all

Just the other day we brought you a report from Automotive News Europe that indicated that Jaguar was getting out of the wagon market. Now it turns out that may not actually be the case. Following the ANE report, Jaguar design boss Ian Callum tweeted out that he had been misquoted. "I said there would be no XE Sportbrake," wrote Callum. "Nothing more!" While stopping short of spelling out what the British automaker has in the pipeline, Callum's implication (by process of elimination of other Jaguar models) is that the new XF could still breed a wagon version. The previous XF Sportbrake, which also came in XFR-S performance spec, was only the second wagon Jaguar had ever made. The first was based on the X-Type that preceded the new XE; offering a long-roof version of that new sports sedan is apparently off the table, but even with the new F-Pace crossover ostensibly filling the role, a new XF Sportbrake could yet become a reality. Of course none of that means that such a wagon would make its way to North America. But we take a great deal of stock in what Callum has to say on the subject, seeing as how he designed every one of the models in question. The X-Type Sportwagon was offered Stateside, however the XF Sportbrake never was, and in addition the F-Pace promises to be a big player for the automaker on this side of the Atlantic. Jaguar shows the face of its upcoming XE S sports sedan

Jaguar has a bunch of projects in the hopper, from the replacements for the XJ sedan and XK coupe/convertible to its very first crossover. But arguably the most important among them is the XE - the British automaker's upcoming new sports sedan. Coventry has given us all sorts of peeks at what to expect from the new XE, from a shadowy rendering of the front end to a photo of a camo-wrapped prototype. But this is our best look yet.
As part of an announcement of a planned audio-visual spectacle scheduled to herald the arrival of the XE, Jaguar has released the image you see above, showing the undisguised XE in apparent S specification. From what we can see, it sports a fascia that looks pretty much exactly as we'd expect, though that's no bad thing. The XE is set to introduce the new Ingenium family of 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines. Whether the XE S shown here would carry a version of that (with a potential supercharger) or transplant the 3.0-liter supercharged V6 from the F-Type S remains to be seen, but whatever's under the hood, we'd expect it to hold the top end of the XE range - at least for the car's introduction before a potential R, R-S or SVR version might come along to supplant it.
One way or another, don't be surprised if you see some BMW 3 Series sedans pacing down the street nervously for the next little while.
