1966 Xke Coupe Series I on 2040-cars
Clayton, New York, United States
I purchased this car last summer from my 82 year old neighbor, who bought it new in 1966. While the speedometer says it has 25k miles, he states that the original mileage is around 45k, as the speedo was broken for some time. Initially, this was his only car. It sat outside as he lived in a condo in Montreal. It has seen its share of winters. At some point, he stopped driving the car, and stored it in his barn. When he sold the farm, the car sat in the garage under his house. The car is completely original, including engine, chassis, and gearbox. (matching numbers) The car was repainted (original BRG color) about 10 or 15 years ago. While the paint is in good shape, the prep work left a bit to be desired, as if you look closely sanding marks can be seen in some areas. Additionally, the rockers have been fiberglassed, I’m assuming because of rust. The work looks wonderful though, and unless you looked underneath and saw some mat overlapping, you’d never know. The floors are solid as is the spare wheel well. As the pictures show, the body is straight as an arrow. The only visible rust is on the inner panel under the air cleaner. I got it running when I got it home. It has great oil pressure (approx 40lbs hot idle). The carbs need to be rebuilt. It spits and carries on, then comes to life. I installed a Pertronix ignition. A new fuel tank was installed about 5 years ago. Additionally I purchased a new water pump (installed), a 3 row Aluminum radiator, and 8 blade electric fan, and all new hoses as a precaution. (they have yet to be installed) The heater assembly is rusted on the bottom and was removed, but is included as is the original radiator and fan. Brakes and clutch work, though the brakes take an extra pump to bring the pedal to the top. Transmission shifts fine. The interior is completely original and is in rough condition. Included in the sale is a brand new OSJI complete biscuit interior kit, (Major Kit) including new seat cushions, dash cover and headliner. It is the most complete kit they offer. To the best of my knowledge the car is complete with the exception of the chrome that goes on either side of the windshield. Currently the car is as shown with the bonnet off and the radiator out, which is how it is being sold. I have not titled the car in my name. My neighbor is Canadian, and that’s where the car was stored. I imported the car to the US and have the proper documents in hand. Theoretically, you could be the second owner. I have many original documents for the car, including the service coupon book! This car is a good candidate for a fun driver, or has great bones for restoration. I thought I had the time to do this car, but found that I do not. |

Jaguar Heritage to auction off part of its classic-car collection
Mon, Feb 19 2018A few years back it was reported that Jaguar Land Rover had purchased the James Hull classic car collection in its entirety. The collection is beyond significant, as it was at the time of sale the biggest single collection of British cars in the world and the largest private car collection in the UK. Consisting of 543 cars, it ranged from the mundane to the obscure, including some extremely rare prototypes. There were 130 Jaguars, for example, from the C-type to the D-type to the XKSS. When the cars were put up for sale in 2014, the asking price was a not-insubstantial $170 million. JLR didn't reveal how much it spent to buy the cars, but now it seems the carmaker is about to recoup some of those costs. At least 50 cars from the collection will be sold by auction house Brightwells, as part of the Affordable Classics at Bicester sale on March 21; some reports have said JLR would be eventually offloading as many as 100 cars. Looking at the listing, there are some definite gems in there. Not all cars are British, as there are Citroens, Mercedes-Benzes, a Fiat and a Goggomobil. Jaguars and Land Rovers are notably absent from Brightwells' listing, which we take as a clue that the sale will consist of cars not crucial to JLR's wellbeing and heritage. That said, for a lover of British cars there's a possibility to grab something truly interesting: For example, the Reliant Scimitar Ferguson 4x4 Prototype must be worth preserving. A 4WD pioneer also known for Massey-Ferguson tractors, Ferguson fitted its system in Jensens as well as a prototype 4WD Mustang in the 1960s. The fiberglass-bodied Reliant sports car is an interesting sidenote in Ferguson's history. Then there's a Vauxhall Chevette 2300 HS, which is a veritable rally-bred RWD hot hatch in comparison to the American market Chevrolet Chevette, its distant relative. On the hot hatch front, there are also Metro and Maestro turbos, which offer plenty of poke in a light, boxy body. Or if you view the internet's popular "Worst Cars Ever Made" lists as shopping lists, you could build your own collection of slightly dodgy cars: Start with the unfortunate-looking Vanden Plas Allegro, continue to the malaise-tastic Morris Ital Camper, and finish it off with a late-model Lada Riva wagon from the mid-1990s. Some cars are in tip-top shape, and some are best seen as restoration projects, like the very pretty Borgward Isabella coupe from 1960.
NHTSA is investigating FCA shifters for roll-away accidents again, this time the rotary units
Tue, Dec 20 2016It seems FCA's shifter troubles aren't over yet. Now, just a few months after issuing a recall to resolve user-related issues with its monostable shifters, the company is again under investigation by NHTSA. The issue is related to the potential for cars to roll away when the rotary-style shifter is not properly placed in park. Two FCA models are the subject of this investigation: the 2013–2016 Ram 1500 and the 2014–2016 Dodge Durango. NHTSA estimates about 1,000,000 vehicles would be affected if a recall is issued. The investigation was started following 43 complaints of vehicles rolling away while supposedly being in "park." Among the complaints were reports of 25 crashes and 9 injuries. NHTSA does point out that in every incident, the parking brake was not engaged. A representative from FCA also gave us an official statement regarding the investigation: "FCA US is cooperating fully with NHTSA's investigation, the scope of which is limited. Other vehicles equipped with rotary shifters are not included. In accordance with prudent practice, the Company joins NHTSA in urging all drivers to use their vehicles' parking brakes." View 35 Photos As mentioned above, other Chrysler products with rotary shifters, such as the Pacifica minivan and 200 sedan, are not involved in this investigation. One of the key differences, as the representative told us, is that these vehicles have electronic parking brakes that automatically engage if the driver does not select park and then opens the door with the seatbelt unbuckled. The Ram 1500 and Durango feature mechanical, manually operated parking brakes and therefore cannot activate the brake automatically. Because this is currently an investigation, an exact cause for the incidents has yet to be determined, and none of the vehicles have been recalled. It's possible there could be a mechanical defect. However, the issue could be a confusing interface causing user error, as was the case with FCA's monostable shifters, where drivers think they've put the car in park but actually haven't. Something that indicates it could be a case of confused users is that NHTSA also opened an investigation into 2012–2014 Jaguar XF and Land Rover Range Rover Evoques for similar issues. Both vehicles use a rotary shifter and have had roll-away complaints levied as well. Even if it is a case of user error, FCA and Jaguar Land Rover may still have to recall their vehicles.
