2000 Isuzu VehiCROSS, with 38179 original miles, a clean Carfax, and garage kept / lovingly maintained for the entirety of it's life. I purchased the truck from its previous owner of almost 10 years, Euro Motor Cars, in Bethesda, MD. That said, the VehiCROSS is in overall immaculate condition, and it runs, drives, stops, and steers as new. I have added the Curt roof rack, the 4 Hella 4000X lights, as well as the Hella work lamp. The lights have yet to be wired. I have recently replaced the tired OEM shocks with KYB Monomax shocks, but the originals are included with the truck. Below is a comprehensive list of questions posted on the VehiCROSS info forum, along with my answers. Any service history records? I have what I believe to be most of the service receipts from 2004 till current ~How long have you owned it? Since September 2014 ~Electric windows work properly or bind? The drives window is a bit slow, passengers window binds on occasion ~Condition of window rubber track/gaskets...(many have ripped or been cut) All window rubber/gaskets are in excellent condition ~Look behind door panels to see if vapor barrier is present - (may indicate previous work on windows) Doors are untouched ~Window regulator /motor been replaced? Not that I am aware of ~Any oil consumption noted, under ANY conditions? (some seem to consume a little when on prolonged highway driving) No oil consumption whatsoever ~Chrome wheels peeling? Rear wheels have some spots on inside of rim, all 4 chrome face surfaces are perfect ~Any ABS light problems? No ABS issues whatsoever ~OEM CD player still work correctly or ERR3 code? Any jammed CDs? OEM CD player will play every CD I own except for Beastie Boys Anthology. Go figure ~Any problems with TOD? TOD works 100% ~Any clunking when decelerating or accelerating? No clunking whatsoever ~Brand & model of tires & approx tread remaining- Michelin LTX M/S 245-60-18 w/ 95% tread and some drywall cracking due to age ~Do all 4 tires match in brand, size, model & wear? Matching tires with even wear all around ~How long have these current 4 tires been on? Probably since 2004 ~Timing belt changed? Possibly, as the belt appears fresh and is thumb nail pliable ~Original OEM brake pads or replacements? Recent pad replacement with modern upgraded units ~Any fluids dripping, ever? No fluid drips anywhere ~Last time & what fluids have been changed? Last oil change 1500 miles ago ~What type of fluids (synthetic oil or regular, motor oil, diff, tranny, transf case)? Mobile One in motor, unsure of the rest ~Evaluate/describe condition of all cladding - scrapes, holes, deformation, dryness, chalky appearance, any evidence of being "painted" in any way? Cladding is excellent with only two minor imperfections ~Are all cladding screws present? Any striped? All cladding screws are in excellent condition ~Condition of 4 screw knobs on rear door panel (often break off) All 4 knobs are perfect ~Condition of inside door opening levers & mechanism (sometimes broken) All levers and mechanisms are in new condition ~Any unusual /excessive vibrations - very subjective of course No vibrations whatsoever ~Any problems with motor mounts? No problems whatsoever ~Determine the history of the car's physical location, if possible (i.e. East Coast, potential rust, desert, etc) Virginia and Maryland ~Inspect thoroughly for rust!! Any evidence of rusted bolts anywhere? Some oxidation and surface rust on undercarriage bolts and brackets in keeping with the age of the vehicle ~Status of front bumper reinforcement bar? (Often rusts off completely) Bumper reinforcement has no rust whatsoever ~Status of rear license plate light/socket/bracket -(often severely rusts) -will give indication if it was in a rust belt area Bracket in excellent condition ~Evaluate engine bay- clean? dirty? Any evidence of leaking fluids of any type?? Evaluate fluid levels. Engine bay is clean, no leaks, and fluid levels are all to spec ~Evaluate air filter- excessively dirty? OEM or after-market? Filter is immaculate ~Has muffler ever been replaced? What's the status of the current muffler? Rusted, surface rust, etc? OEM, after-market? (Since, as I understand it, these mufflers are no longer available, so an aftermarket one with some modification to the pipes may be required.) The exhaust system appears to be 100% original with some surface rust in keeping with the age of the truck ~Has it had to go through emissions testing recently? (Some states require for registration, some don't) Recently passed Virginia emissions with flying colors ~Ever been lifted or torsion bars cranked? Never lifted ~Condition of CV joints? (Can be damaged after being lifted) CV joints are in excellent condition ~Battery- status, condition and age New Optima Red Top in Sept 2014 ~Any unusual flashing of any lights on dash or shifter? Junkyard Gem: 1997 Acura SLX

Mon, Sep 25 2023

By the second half of the 1990s, the tremendous sales success of the Ford Explorer (introduced as a 1991 model) and Jeep Grand Cherokee (introduced as a 1993 model) had made it clear clear that the future of the American road would be trucks. Any automotive manufacturer not selling a full line of SUV-ish machinery here would be irrelevant soon after the dawn of the new century, and the car-and-bike-centric American Honda Motor Company was therefore in big trouble. The Civic could be used as the basis for a small crossover SUV (which debuted here as the 1997 Honda CR-V), but Honda needed to buy time to design and produce the platform that would underpin the 2001 Acura MDX and 2003 Honda Pilot. That time was purchased via a deal to sell rebadged Isuzu trucks as Hondas and Acuras. Today's Junkyard Gem is one of those Honda-ized Isuzus, found in a Colorado boneyard. Honda began selling the Isuzu Rodeo as the Passport (recycling the name they'd used on the U.S.-market Super Cub motorcycle) for the 1994 model year, and Acura dealers started moving SLX-badged Isuzu Troopers in the 1997 model year. Just to make things interesting in the Isuzu-Honda world, North American Isuzu dealers sold Honda Odysseys with Isuzu Oasis badges at the same time. Isuzu had gone all-truck for the American market after the last Styluses (and closely related Geo Storms) were sold here as 1993 models. Sadly, Isuzu's final (non-commercial) new vehicles sold here were rebadged Chevy Trailblazers and Colorados, more than 30 years after Chevrolet began selling Isuzu Faster pickups here with LUV badges. Honda never did build any body-on-frame trucks, but that proved unnecessary in order to make some money during the CUV/SUV era. The SLX never sold particularly well, but it gave Acura dealers a luxury truck to park next to the Integras, TLs, RLs, CLs and NSXs in their showrooms. After 1999, the SLX was gone, leaving just the 2000 model year as a blank spot for Acura-badged SUVs. This truck held together like a real Honda product, getting fairly close to the 300,000-mile mark (I've found junkyard Accords with better than a half-million miles on their odometers, plus one apiece Civic and CR-V that got past 400,000 miles during their lives). The original owner's manuals were still in the glovebox when I found this truck. At the end, it appears that it was towed away for being parked illegally. Maybe the engine or transmission failed and its final owner just walked away.

GM SUV window switch recall urges owners to park vehicles outside

Thu, 07 Aug 2014

It's not unusual for there to be a lag between an automaker announcing a recall and the official documentation showing up on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website. So it's no surprise that a recent GM campaign took about a month to appear in its official capacity. However, there appears to be some big differences between the two reports with potential safety implications.
In late June, GM announced that it needed to recall 181,984 examples of the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Buick Rainier, GMC Envoy, Isuzu Ascender and Saab 9-7x from the 2005-2007 model years, plus the 2006 Chevy Trailblazer EXT and 2006 GMC Envoy XL. The new documents paint a slightly different picture with 184,611 needing repaired and different model years listed.
The reason for the fix is still the same, though. It's possible for fluid to contact the master power window switch module in the driver's door, which can corrode the part. Eventually this could cause a short circuit, leaving the buttons inoperable and potentially leading to a fire. But the new NHTSA documents add an important note: "A fire could occur even while the vehicle is not in use. As a precaution, owners are advised to park outside until the remedy has been made."

Junkyard Gem: 1992 Geo Storm

Mon, May 15 2017

GM's Geo brand existed from the 1989 through 1997 model years. While mostly remembered today for the Suzuki Cultus-based Metro (which continued to be sold with Chevrolet badging until 2001), there were also Geo Prizms (California-built Toyota Corollas), Geo Spectrums (Isuzu I-Mark), Geo Trackers (Suzuki Sidekick), and Geo Storms (Isuzu Impulse). Storms are very rare now, but I found this one in Colorado last week. The idea of the Geo brand was that it would lure young car buyers in a way that wouldn't be possible with stodgy brands such as Oldsmobile or Buick. While GM never sold as many Geos as hoped, enough hit American roads that they were pretty numerous for a while. 1980s-style pink-and-blue graphics remained relevant into the early 1990s. I'm not sure if these pink decal stripes were done at the factory, at a dealership, or later on in someone's back yard. The Storm GSi was the factory-hot-rod version, but this is an ordinary Storm with the 95-horsepower, 12-valve engine. Automatic transmission, of course. It never made it to 100,000 miles. The car seems to be in good shape, so perhaps something broke at about age 10 and it sat in a garage for the next 15 years. This content is hosted by a third party.
