This truck still looks amazing. It's timeless design creates personality and character, something many vehicles lack.

Aside from the visual aesthetic of the truck it is a very capable utility vehicle. A solid rear axel with a limited-slip differential, rally-based suspension with heat expansion reservoirs, Recaro leather sport seats, 18” wheels, a 3.5-liter V6 engine, and (at the time) the revolutionary Torque-On-Demand 4WD system (made by the same company that pioneered the critically acclaimed Volkswagen/Audi DSG transmission). But enough with the history lesson, I’ll leave it to you to do your homework, as I’m sure you have if you’re serious about buying one.

This specific Vehicross is a 2001 Victory White Ironman Edition with ~65,000 miles (1 of 86 Ironman editions from 2001). I am the third owner, and like the two gentleman before me, I have done everything within my power to keep this vehicle 100% OEM. The rims are original, the stereo and CD changer are original, there no aftermarket mods, no fancy subwoofers. I've done my best to keep the essence of the original vision alive.

Interior
This Vehicross is clean on the inside. Seeing the dashboard and center console fully illuminated (no lights burnt out) without any check engine lights (no ABS or TOD problems) is a sight to behold. It still feels new. It’s like stepping into a time machine. The leather of the Recaro seats has held up respectively, showing some wear, but less than you would expect. The original spare tire still holds air perfectly, all of the jack equipment is stowed in a near original state, and the cargo bungie still has lots of spring in it.

Exterior
Being that the second owner was frequently deployed in the military, this Vehicross spent a lot of time in storage. Because of this, it has very little rust on the upper body. The white paint is still bright when it’s clean, with a few scratches I’ve identified in the photos. The headlights and fog lights illuminate just as bright as they ever did, and all side markers and brake/tail lights glow as expected. The roof rack and plastic black cladding around the base of the exterior stays nice and dark when maintained appropriately (I use Meguire’s Back to Black), and when contrasted by the bright white, is stunning.

Mechanical
Often what still functions normally under the hood doesn’t get the spotlight. However, it is important to note that the engine in this truck is still reliably cranking out 215 HP and 230 LB-FT every day (and without any measurable oil burn). Since I took over ownership I’ve changed the oil & filter myself every 2,500 miles. The transmission still shifts smoothly and the dynamic TOD is fascinating to watch as it transfers power in real-time to the different sets of wheels in slippery conditions. It does not leak oil (engine or drivetrain), coolant, or wiper fluid. The suspension is still firm and the tires have at least 50% of their tread left. I recently completed the 60,000 mile maintenance which included a flush of the front and rear axels, transfer case, coolant, brake fluid, air filter, rear propellor seal, and serpentine belt. The only non-OEM part I have installed is a Dynomax muffler because the original just wore out.

A few maintenance items to note are as follows: First, the A/C does not blow cold. It has been this way since I purchased the truck, and I’ve never had it diagnosed. Second, I must top off the brake fluid every month or so. I have not been able to diagnose where the leak is since it is so slow, but my $8 bottle of brake fluid has gotten me through the last year and half without any issues. As with most Vehicross’ the automatic windows struggle a bit to go back up. Although this is a straight-forward fix, I’ve never taken the doors apart. There are also a few nicks and scratches in the plastic around the cargo area in the rear, but nothing out of the ordinary. The chroming on the 18” rims has begun to separate. From a distance it’s difficult to perceive, but up close it’s evident. Many enthusiasts may want to upgrade the rims to something more aggressive, something I’ve always considered, but never done. Some of the silver of the Vehicross/Ironman Edition logo on the driver's side has also flaked off. There are some scratches in the cladding below the passenger side door, also noted in the photos. The headlights have a slight haze at the tops, but once again, nothing out of the ordinary.

I’m sure you will have specific questions, please feel free to send me a message or give me a call at 614.560.3393. I’ll be more than willing to share my experiences or coordinate a meeting. I have all of my service records as well as many records from the previous owners. I have all of the original documentation, user manuals, and two sets of original keys with remotes. I welcome bids from out of state, and I am more than excited to pick you up at the airport or help schedule vehicle transport. This truck has been a blast to own, I've set the reserve low, and I'm excited to pass it on to the next enthusiast!

GM re-recalls 11k SUVs

Tue, Oct 13 2015

General Motors is recalling a bunch of previously recalled SUVs because, well, they still aren't quite fixed. The latest repairs are necessary on 10,974 SUVs in North America, including 9,932 in only the US. Affected models include the 2006-2007 Buick Rainier, Chevrolet Trailblazer, and GMC Envoy; plus the 2006 Trailblazer EXT and Envoy XL. While not listed by NHTSA, a statement by GM to Autoblog says the 2006-2007 Saab 9-7X and Isuzu Ascender are also affected. In these SUVs, it's possible that liquid could get into the driver's door master power window switch module and cause a short circuit. This could potentially lead to a fire, and owners are urged to park the vehicles outside until repaired. GM has been trying to fix this issue for years. It started as an investigation into fires, and that led to a recall for about 250,000 vehicles in cold-weather states. A nationwide campaign came in 2013 for 193,000 of them in the US. Last year, the automaker decided to replace the whole module as a repair. However in a recent investigation of these recalls, GM discovered that this latest group of SUVs never received the new part. According to documents submitted to NHTSA (as a PDF), "Some dealers incorrectly used the labor code associated with module replacement when, instead of replacing the module, they only added a protective coating to the module." To fix things this time, the models finally get the correct component. Related Video: GM Statement General Motors is recalling 9,932 older midsize SUVs in the U.S. because they were mistakenly excluded from an earlier recall. Certain 2006 Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL, and 2006-2007 TrailBlazer, Envoy, Buick Rainier, Saab 9-7X and Isuzu Ascender vehicles may continue to have a condition in which the printed circuit board inside the driver's door may corrode and short if exposed to certain fluids such as melted snow containing road salt. GM is aware of four fires but no crashes, injuries or fatalities associated with the expanded recall. The total number of vehicles being recalled, including Canada, Mexico and exports is 10.974. Customers are urged to park these vehicles outside until repairs have been made. GM reported this recall to the NHTSA on September 23.

Junkyard Gem: 1994 Isuzu Rodeo 4WD

Tue, Feb 28 2023

After a decade in which Isuzu-built Chevrolet LUV pickups, Isuzu-engined Chevrolet Chevettes and Isuzu Geminis with confusing "Opel by Isuzu" or "Buick/Opel Isuzu" badges, Isuzu finally began selling Americans its vehicles with Isuzu badging in the early 1980s. There were Isuzu cars, sure, but the P'up pickup and (starting in 1984) the Trooper SUV showed that Isuzu was likely to rake in the most yen by selling trucks on this side of the Pacific. The three-door convertible Amigo appeared here in 1989, but it was a little too small and silly to sell much among the suburban-commuter set. For the 1991 model year, a five-door Amigo sibling showed up: the Rodeo. The early Rodeo is getting quite rare today, but I was able to find this fairly clean '94 in a Denver-area self-service yard a few months back. These trucks, which were based on the same chassis as the P'up (known as the Isuzu Pickup after 1987) sold well in Colorado. You could get the first-generation Rodeo with rear-wheel-drive, but the four-wheel-drive version made more sense if you wanted to slog through snow and mud in the Rockies (or just feel safe when crossing a parking lot dusted with the white stuff). This truck has true four-wheel-drive, not what eventually became known as all-wheel-drive, but at least the higher trim levels had automatic locking hubs instead of the manual sort that forced you to stop and kneel in the mud to switch. Americans loved automatic transmissions nearly as much in 1994 as we do today, but they cost a lot more relative to manuals back then. This truck has a five-speed manual. The MSRP on this truck was $19,249, or about $39,075 in 2022 dollars. If you wanted it with an automatic transmission, the price went up to $20,349 ($41,310 today). The air conditioning in this one cost an additional 850 bucks (1,725 bucks now). The engine is an Isuzu 3.2-liter V6, rated at 175 horsepower. This truck was built at Subaru-Isuzu Automotive in Indiana; Subaru eventually bought out Isuzu's share of the joint venture and now only Subaru models are built there. Just to add another manufacturer to the mix, Honda sold rebadged Rodeos with Passport badges (and rebadged Troopers as Acura SLXs). This one was well-cared-for, looking clean for a machine with close to 200,000 miles on the clock. We can assume that some costly mechanical ailment finally sent it to this, its final parking place.

Junkyard Gem: 2004 Isuzu Axiom

Sat, Jun 10 2023

Though the final Isuzu-badged car sold in the United States was the 1993 Isuzu Stylus, Isuzu did very well selling trucks here during the remainder of the 1990s. Things still looked pretty good for Isuzu as the new century dawned, but by then everybody had upped their truck game and many of the competition's offerings made Isuzus seem old-fashioned. Isuzu cooked up a distinctive new body for the Rodeo chassis, arranged to have it built at Subaru's plant in Indiana, and called it the Axiom. You won't see many Axioms today, but I found this last-year-of-production example in an Oklahoma City car graveyard recently. As we all know, the decline and fall of Isuzu in North America accelerated quickly as the 2000s progressed. The VehiCROSS was interesting but just too weird and it got the axe after 2001. The increasingly antiquated Trooper held on through 2002, the Amigo (aka Rodeo Sport) through 2003, and that left just the Axiom and Rodeo to hang on by their fingernails into 2004. By 2005, the only new Isuzu-branded passenger vehicles sold in the United States were two rebadged Chevrolets: the Ascender (Trailblazer) and i-Series pickup (Colorado). In early 2009, Isuzu announced that it would be departing, presumably forever. You can still buy new Isuzu commercial trucks here, of course. The 2004 Axiom had MSRPs starting at $24,849 for the S trim level with rear-wheel-drive and going up to $30,499 for the upscale XS with all-wheel-drive. That's about $40,703 and $49,958 in 2023 dollars. Joe Isuzu was brought back after a decade of retirement to pitch the Axiom. Note that Joe's brag in this commercial is how much cheaper the Axiom was than the Volvo Cross Country. This truck is the cheap Axiom S 4x2, which still seems well-appointed. The 2004 Axiom's 3.5-liter V6 engine made 250 horsepower and 246 pound-feet, up from 230 horsepower and 230 pound-feet in the 2002-2003 Axioms. The power improvements were the result of the switch to gasoline direct injection fuel delivery for the '04 Axiom. Isuzu was so proud of the system that it applied these badges. The only transmission available was a four-speed automatic. The Axiom was introduced to the American public as the SPYMobile in the 2001 film "Spy Kids." The body and interior of this one appear to be nice enough for a 19-year-old vehicle, so we can assume that it showed up in this place as the result of expensive mechanical problems. We'll get to the Joe Isuzu ads in a moment.
