2000 Isuzu Vehicross Tone Edition on 2040-cars
Kansas City, Kansas, United States
This little beauty is one of the best examples of this iconic SUV offered at any time. I got it two years ago with about 62,542 miles on it.
As a hot rodder I can't leave anything stock so I started spending a lot of time lurking on the VehiCROSS enthusiast web site. There I learned of an early lover of these capable little tanks named Tone. I believe he was from Texas and his passion for these set the standard for all mods and improvements to come. I was able to locate, purchase and install a number of items he had specially made for these rigs. The rest I just learned from other enthusiasts cars and their trial and error modifications which guided me to successfully create the version you see below. For the person who buys this I'd highly recommend the VehiCROSS fourm for guidance and information. Probably the biggest visual mod was losing the factory chrome wheels. These new treads fill up the wheel well with a 'meaty" look without resorting to a lift kit, that has it's own side effects. The Nitto Terra Grappler tires are grippy when needed but quiet on the road. A really good choice. One of the Tone items I was able to get and install was an electronic short shift kit that restores the off the line launch lost to installing "big meats". I've also installed an electronic speedo compensator so it reads correctly with different diameter tires. The very cool built in trailer hitch was a Tone invention which he had fabricated in small batches. None were available when I wanted to install but members kindly emailed me all the specs and had a local fabricator build one for me. I incorporated improved depth that allowed a hitch lock to be installed. These hitches are not for pulling a big trailer but for me it was a way hanging a 3 bike carrier back there. The seats are in great condition because I have used Lexol leather conditioner for years which actually feeds the leather and doesn't dry it out. You can see in the pix I've removed the back seat. It doesn't look like anyone has ever sat in it. I will post more pix as time permits and the week goes on. Another major mod I do to all my liquid cooled cars is installing Evans Coolant. Evans is a Propylene Glycol coolant that contains no water and is much more effective cooling engines. It never breaks down and never needs replaced. Because there is no water, there is no rust, scale,or corrosion and has been proven in over the road trucks with well over 500,000 miles. The advantage in my cars is that it is very gentle on the engine and radiator. Check out the Evans website for more info. The old sound system with the old school CD changer was removed and three VDO gauges with a carbon face plate were installed in it's place Oil Temp, Oil Pressure and a Voltmeter all new and working perfectly. The Kenwood CD player has a thumb drive slot plus a iPhone port, removable face, all speakers replaced with mid level Pyle including new tweeters in upper door and topped off with a JVC mini powered sub under the drivers seat with a control mounted on the center console. New Bilstein shocks, new front axles/CVs, new turbo muffler and Supertrapp great sounding exhaust, K&N free flow, permanent air filter, new sunroof installed,Hella driving lights, Hella fog lights, a new front bumper[under cladding] back door release from button on dash or alarm key fob[s]. Junkyard Gem: 1988 Chevrolet Spectrum Sport Coupe
Wed, Aug 23 2023Before General Motors created the Geo brand for cars built or designed by its overseas partners, the Chevrolet Division put its badges on U.S.-market versions of the Toyota Corolla Sprinter, the Suzuki Cultus and the Isuzu Gemini. Those cars were known as the Nova, the Sprint and the Spectrum, and all became Geos starting with the 1989 model year. Today's Junkyard Gem is one of the last Chevy Spectrums ever sold, found in a Denver self-service yard a few months ago. Midway through 1988, the Chevrolet Spectrum abruptly became the Geo Spectrum and was assigned to the 1989 model year. This car was built in May 1988, making it one of the very last of the pre-Geo Spectrums. The Chevrolet/Geo Spectrum was available as a four-door sedan and as a three-door hatchback, from the 1985 through 1989 model years. For 1988 only, a Spectrum Sport Coupe package, featuring some trim upgrades and these rad decals, could be had on the hatchback. This car was essentially identical to its Isuzu-badged counterpart, the I-Mark. In 1988, the MSRP for the cheapest possible Chevy Spectrum hatchback (the stripped-down Spectrum Express) was $6,495, while its somewhat better-equipped I-Mark twin started at $7,439 (that's $17,128 and $19,617 in 2023 dollars). Meanwhile, the base Hyundai Excel hatchback listed at $5,295 and the Yugo GV cost a hilarious $4,199 ($13,963 and $10,941 in today's money). Power came from this 1.5-liter SOHC four-cylinder, rated at 70 horsepower. A turbocharged version with 110 horsepower was available as well. You could get an automatic transmission in the Spectrum, but this car has the base five-speed manual. This car didn't get the optional air conditioning, but at least it has the traditional Isuzu HVAC control icons featuring blow-dried hair and high-heeled dominatrix boots. Just over 170,000 miles on the odometer. Someone installed a pretty good (for the 1980s) Blaupunkt Charlotte CR148 cassette deck in the dash. This was a necessity if you wanted to enjoy full appreciation of the music of the era. The Spectrum is special! It's as slick as city rain. "I didn't spend a lot of money but with my Spectrum it looks like I did." Joe Isuzu mocked Toyota salesmen when pitching the I-Mark. As was nearly always the case during the 1980s, the JDM ads for the same car were much more fun. They should have recreated this commercial with Spectrums.
Junkyard Gem: 1997 Acura SLX
Tue, Nov 27 2018When I'm prowling wrecking yards, I'm always on the lookout for obscure examples of badge engineering, and the weirder they are, the better I like them. While I haven't managed to spot a junked Suzuki Equator yet, I have photographed such rarities as the Saab 9-2x and Isuzu Ascender. A few weeks ago, I encountered one of the real oddities of the Honda-Isuzu dealmaking of the 1990s: a 1997 Acura SLX, a luxed-up Isuzu Trooper that sold very poorly and is now mostly forgotten today. Plenty of Acura SUVs designed and built entirely by Honda roll out of American showrooms today, but the 1990s SUV boom caught Honda by surprise. The first MDX wasn't ready until the 2001 model year, so Honda made a deal to take Isuzu Troopers, apply wood and leather inside and Acura badges outside, and cash in on North Americans' increasing disdain for minivans, sedans, and station wagons. Americans were very familiar with the Trooper, which was sold here from the middle 1980s until the 2002 model year, when the Chevrolet Trailblazer-based Ascender went on sale. The Isuzu name stuck around on these shores until 2008. The SLX was a decent enough truck, but there was no disguising its proletariat Trooper roots from status-conscious SUV shoppers who wanted to look more oligarchic while conquering a half-inch of snow in the mall parking lot. It didn't help that the 1997 Trooper L listed at $27,800 and the SLX Premium cost $38,300 (that's about $44,200 and $60,900 in inflation-adjusted 2018 bucks). SLX sales started off weak and plummeted after that. After 1999, the SLX was done. I spent years trying to find one in California and Colorado wrecking yards, but the few that were sold seemed to be sturdy enough to stay alive for a couple of decades. Finally, this high-mile '97 appeared in a Denver yard. This content is hosted by a third party. To view it, please update your privacy preferences. Manage Settings.
Junkyard Gem: 1996 Isuzu Trooper
Fri, Sep 9 2022Though Americans had been buying the Isuzu-built Chevrolet LUV pickup since the 1972 model year (plus plenty of Isuzu-derived Chevettes and Chevette components later on), the first widely available Isuzu-badged vehicle available here was the LUV-sibling P'Up. That was the 1981 model year, and the I-Mark (Gemini) and Impulse (Piazza) soon followed. Later in the 1980s, GM (which owned a hefty chunk of Isuzu by that time) began selling Isuzu-built Spectrums and Storms with Chevrolet and/or Geo badges… but Isuzu started its United States business by selling trucks, and that's the only type of Isuzu you could buy new here when the company departed our shores in 2009. The Trooper SUV first went on sale here for the 1984 model year, and eventually the Trooper became the biggest-selling Isuzu in North America. Here's an example from the sales heyday of the middle 1990s, found in a Colorado self-service yard. In its homeland, this truck was known as the Bighorn. Elsewhere around the globe, however, it went by far too many names to list here (though Trooper was the most common). Highlights include the Holden Jackaroo and Caribe 442. Honda's desperation to cash in on the 1990s North American SUV craze led to the creation of an Acura-badged Trooper, known as the SLX and sold here from the 1996 through 1999 model years. As part of this arrangement between Isuzu, GM, and Honda, the Isuzu Rodeo became the Honda Passport here (confusing every North American who had ever bought a Passport-badged Honda Super Cub, which got that name so as not to run afoul of the builders of the Piper Super Cub aircraft) and Isuzu dealers sold Honda Odysseys with Oasis badges. Once we'd gotten a few years into our current century, the only Isuzu-badged vehicles you could buy new here (not counting commercial trucks) weren't even built by Isuzu at that point. One was the Ascender (a badge-engineered Chevy Trailblazer) and the other was the i-Series pickup (a badge-engineered Chevy Colorado). Oh, sure, a handful of Axioms and Rodeos slunk out of American Isuzu showrooms in the early years of the 2000s, but the clock really started ticking for Isuzu USA when the final Troopers showed up for 2002. When this truck was built, Isuzu was engaged in an eye-gouging, kidney-spearing price- and financing-deal war with Mitsubishi Motors and its Montero.
