2000 Isuzu Vehicross Tone Edition on 2040-cars
Kansas City, Kansas, United States
This little beauty is one of the best examples of this iconic SUV offered at any time. I got it two years ago with about 62,542 miles on it.
As a hot rodder I can't leave anything stock so I started spending a lot of time lurking on the VehiCROSS enthusiast web site. There I learned of an early lover of these capable little tanks named Tone. I believe he was from Texas and his passion for these set the standard for all mods and improvements to come. I was able to locate, purchase and install a number of items he had specially made for these rigs. The rest I just learned from other enthusiasts cars and their trial and error modifications which guided me to successfully create the version you see below. For the person who buys this I'd highly recommend the VehiCROSS fourm for guidance and information. Probably the biggest visual mod was losing the factory chrome wheels. These new treads fill up the wheel well with a 'meaty" look without resorting to a lift kit, that has it's own side effects. The Nitto Terra Grappler tires are grippy when needed but quiet on the road. A really good choice. One of the Tone items I was able to get and install was an electronic short shift kit that restores the off the line launch lost to installing "big meats". I've also installed an electronic speedo compensator so it reads correctly with different diameter tires. The very cool built in trailer hitch was a Tone invention which he had fabricated in small batches. None were available when I wanted to install but members kindly emailed me all the specs and had a local fabricator build one for me. I incorporated improved depth that allowed a hitch lock to be installed. These hitches are not for pulling a big trailer but for me it was a way hanging a 3 bike carrier back there. The seats are in great condition because I have used Lexol leather conditioner for years which actually feeds the leather and doesn't dry it out. You can see in the pix I've removed the back seat. It doesn't look like anyone has ever sat in it. I will post more pix as time permits and the week goes on. Another major mod I do to all my liquid cooled cars is installing Evans Coolant. Evans is a Propylene Glycol coolant that contains no water and is much more effective cooling engines. It never breaks down and never needs replaced. Because there is no water, there is no rust, scale,or corrosion and has been proven in over the road trucks with well over 500,000 miles. The advantage in my cars is that it is very gentle on the engine and radiator. Check out the Evans website for more info. The old sound system with the old school CD changer was removed and three VDO gauges with a carbon face plate were installed in it's place Oil Temp, Oil Pressure and a Voltmeter all new and working perfectly. The Kenwood CD player has a thumb drive slot plus a iPhone port, removable face, all speakers replaced with mid level Pyle including new tweeters in upper door and topped off with a JVC mini powered sub under the drivers seat with a control mounted on the center console. New Bilstein shocks, new front axles/CVs, new turbo muffler and Supertrapp great sounding exhaust, K&N free flow, permanent air filter, new sunroof installed,Hella driving lights, Hella fog lights, a new front bumper[under cladding] back door release from button on dash or alarm key fob[s]. Junkyard Gem: 1990 Isuzu Pickup, Zombie Response Edition
Sun, Feb 19 2023Isuzu-built pickups first went on sale in North America for the 1972 model year, but with Chevrolet LUV badges. Elsewhere, they were known as the Isuzu KB or Isuzu Faster, But eventually they got Isuzu badges in America, and were named the Isuzu P'up in the early 1980s. Later, they became simply known as the Isuzu Pickup (following Toyota's lead after the US-market Hilux became just the Toyota Truck) starting when the third-generation Faster debuted for 1988. Here's one of those trucks, found in a Denver self-service boneyard last Halloween. I see a lot of zombie-themed decor on junkyard vehicles, mostly just a single decal here or there (often combined with snowboarding and/or cannabis-themed stickers), but someone went above and beyond in the zombification of this Isuzu. This truck started life with a coat of dark blue paint, but that's just too cheerful when you're out hunting down the undead. Now it has a thick coat of flat black and "Toxic Waste Green" stickers everywhere. It appears that you can buy this sticker set on Amazon for under $30 right now. Remember when you'd see these Metal Mulisha stickers all over? In case you're looking for some Get Up Stand Up Light Roast coffee, Marley Coffee has you covered. Someone should write a doctoral dissertation about the stickers found on vehicles in Denver car graveyards. The engine is the 2.6-liter Isuzu straight-four that went into so many Amigos and Rodeos over the years. You should have four-wheel drive and a manual transmission when pursuing zombies across the wastelands of eastern Colorado, especially in the winter, and this truck has both. There's no telling how many miles were on it at the end, because some junkyard shopper nabbed the instrument cluster. While four-wheel-drive small pickups are useful even at age 32, the rust plus the manual transmission (plus the Zombie Appearance Package) would have made this one a tough sell for its final owner. When you have Isuzus of the late 1980s and early 1990s, you have Joe Isuzu! Did you know Joe Isuzu was a phone phreaker? The Isuzu Pickup was slightly cheaper than the Toyota Truck, if you considered only the stripped-down base versions. The only things scarier than Isuzu trucks are Isuzu trucks on sale!
16 things I learned about the Isuzu VehiCROSS
Wed, Apr 8 2020There are plenty of cars I remember existing, but actually know very little about due to the passage of time or just not particularly caring when they were new. Take the Isuzu VehiCROSS, which I fondly recall as this wackadoo off-roader from the late 1990s and early 2000s. But honestly, that's about it. So, since I've got a little extra time kicking about, I decided to fall into the rabbit hole labeled Isuzu VehiCROSS for an hour to see how much I could find out about this SUV (or "sport/utility" in 1999 parlance) that shared labeling with the watch I wore in 1999. Enjoy. 1) The VehiCROSS was not based on the Rodeo, as I always assumed, but rather the Trooper RS. Oh, so that bigger, boxier Isuzu they turned into an Acura? No, no, no. The RS was the two-door Trooper, and specifically the second-generation two-door Trooper, which I just discovered was a thing. And what a gawky, dorky, that-has-to-be-Photoshopped thing it was. Apparently, the Trooper RS was sold in the United States from 1993 to 1995, and in very small numbers. That is not surprising. 2) It was probably obvious, but the VehiCROSS was based on a concept car. Specifically, a concept car shown at the 1993 Tokyo auto show. 3) The quick turnaround from concept to its Japanese market introduction for 1997 was the result of some innovative manufacturing methods at the time (it arrived in the United States in 1999). According to the Motor Trend first drive, "There would be no time-consuming clinics, no 'courtroom drama' with the finance department, and to oversee the project, a 'Zip Team' consisting of 15-20 members was given the task of developing the vehicle in about half the normal time." Among its accomplishments, the team came up with a way to more quickly and cheaply produce the VehiCROSS' unique body pieces. Again according to Motor Trend, Isuzu used carbon stamping dies inside of the conventional cast iron dies. Though the carbon could be used far fewer times and result in a reduced overall capacity, they cost one-third to one-half as much and could be made in about six weeks – the cast iron ones would take four months and run about $1.5 million in 1990s dollars. Isuzu estimated they'd only be able to produce 2,400 VehiCROSSes per year until the carbon dies wore out. Then that would be it. According to sales data on Wikipedia, Isuzu managed to sell 2,005 in the U.S. alone in year 1 and 4,153 in total. In Japan, there were 1,805 sold in total.
Florida man found dead inside SUV covered in parking tickets
Wed, Dec 7 2016A woman in Fort Lauderdale, FL, got a nasty shock last month when she discovered a corpse sitting at the wheel of a heavily ticketed SUV parked near the Broward County Courthouse. According to the Sun Sentinel, Carolyn White was walking down a street in Fort Lauderdale when she spotted something strange. An Isuzu Axiom with deeply tinted windows was parked at the curb festooned with parking tickets. Curious to find out how someone could get that many parking tickets, she went to investigate. "I was being nosy," she told the Sentinel. "I never let the meter man catch me. I never got a parking ticket and I wanted to know why somebody else got caught. And that's what made me look inside." When she approached the vehicle, she discovered more than just a pile of tickets under the wipers. An elderly man was sitting in the driver's seat, slumped face down over the center console between the seats, clutching a credit card in a still hand. "Oh my God, please tell me this man is not dead," was White's first thought, she told the paper. Unfortunately, he was. The Broward County Medical Examiner stated the man in the SUV, Jacob Morpeau of Miami, had been dead for quite some time when White discovered him. Records show that the Isuzu was ticketed in that space numerous times between November 12 and November 15, including twice in the space of three minutes the morning Morpeau's body was discovered. "I can understand why the meter person probably didn't see him from the driver's side," said White. "He was underneath the steering wheel, his head was in the middle of the seat, between the two seats. But you could see him on the passenger's side. That's how I seen him, from the sidewalk." Fort Lauderdale city officials declined to comment on the incident, but an email from the City Clerk's office stated that the $160 dollars racked up while Morpeau sat dead at the wheel of his SUV would be dismissed due to "extenuating circumstances".
