Up for sale is the awesome 1978 International Harvester Scout 2! It is in excellent condition! The frame is solid and the body is solid as can be with no rust through. The paint has been re-done several years back but was a great quality job. There are a few scratches, but nothing serious. The vehicle was a daily driver for years. It has a black soft top in pretty good shape. The top is a few years old, but has been in storage for most of its life. It keeps water out and can easily be removed and that's whats important. The floors are solid as can be and look new underneath! The floor pans are all in excellent condition and the body panels are as well. Even the driver's side inner fender (where the battery is located) that is very prone to rusting is still in excellent condition!!!! The scout was garaged/carport stored since purchased new and is a 3 owner vehicle. It has right at 92000 original miles on it!! All glass is in good shape as well. The body appears stock with the exception of some aftermarket added front and rear tube bumpers.
Interior: good condition and has been restored a few years back. You can see some age on it, but overall in good shape ! The seats do have a little fading from days of sitting in the sun at the golf course from the second owner but are sturdy and solid and still feel good. The carpeting appears to have been redone a few years back, but is in good condition. Under the carpet there is a layer of dynamat type material to keep heat/sound out and under that the floors are in excellent condition with NO rust through anywhere on them! The rear seat is also a fold and tumble model and it matches the front seats as well. The center console is still there and in good shape. The dash has a few small cracks on it, but still in overall good condition. Previous owner added a new JVC Cd player and 4 new Memphis car audio speakers to the vehicle. They sound great!
Exterior/ Suspension: Scout has a spring over setup with gives approximately 5" of lift. It was done right and it appears that only good quality products were used. The second owner had the lift and suspension work done at a shop in North Carolina. The third owner also had the same shop add a 3" body lift with urethane bushings as well to give this acout about 8" of lift that was done the correct way by a professional shop.
The paint is glossy and looks nice, but does have a few small scratches here and there. The most noticeable is on the rear quarter panel on passenger side (see pic). Also the passenger side door has scratches on the fender where the door was not adjusted properly by the prvious owner and the door was rubbing the fender and has scratched off some of the paint. I have adjusted the door now (Pics shows passenger door before it was adjusted) , but the scratches are still present.
Engine starts right up and does not have all the usual scout oil leaks that are common on these vehicles. The trans shifts smooth, and runs good! 4x4 works good and it has auto locking original front hubs on it.
I got it from a guy who needed money so I bought it and fixed it up and got it back in good mechanical shape and am offering it up for sale at what I've got in it. I don't really want to sell it, but promised wife I would at least list it since I already have another scout. I just hate seeing them sit and rust away or be stripped for parts. This one is one of the best bodies I have seen. It was used as a pleasure vehicle by all 3 owners and was primarily driven in the summers. You will be able to tell when you see it that it has been pampered.
Recently replaced parts are: battery, brake booster, brake flush, brakes serviced/adjusted, trans fluid exchange, transfer case fluid, differentials serviced, oil and filter changed, tune up, fuel system serviced, new fuel lines, new fuel filter, new air filter, new 160 degree thermostat, coolant flush, had the carb adjusted (was running rich when I got it) and I'm sure there is other work that I have done that I forgot to mention.
It runs and drives great, but will need 2 new tires soon as the front tires are slick. Rear tires have probably 90% tread remaining. The tires are 38.5x14.50x15 super swamper tsl/sx radials. Also front steering stabilizer and all 4 shocks will need to be replaced soon as they are a few years old now and the bushings have cracking/dryrot and 2 of the bushings are missing. ($450 for 2 new tires and aprox $150 for shocks and stabilizer shock).
Of course this is a used vehicle and is not perfect by any means, but a great scout that's able to be driven and enjoyed from the start or an excellent candidate for a complete restoration that wouldn't require much work at all! I have driven it on several trips on about 45 mins to an hour each way with no issues.
I would advise any buyers to come take a look/drive before purchasing if it is feasible, but I do not think you will be disappointed in it at all! It is a solid scout it better condition that 90% of them out there that's able to be driven from the day you get it.
I WILL ADD MORE PICTURES OF THE SCOUT LATER THIS WEEK AS I AM ABLE TO. I HAVE BEEN STORING THE SCOUT AT MY PARENTS HOUSE SO I WILL TRY TO SWING BY AND TAKE A FEW MORE PICTURES OF INTERIOR, SCRATCHES, ETC....
