1973 International Scout II: International has been building Trucks, Pickups and later Travelalls since 1907. In the late 1950s IH began a design plan to produce a vehicle to compete with the Jeep CJ and by late 1960
the first Scout was available. 1961 was the first model year and "Scout 80" was the designation for the new Scout models. The Scout 80 evolved into the Scout 800 which led to the Scout IIs that were manufactured from 1971 to 1980 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
The Scout II is most identifiable by its different front grills. For 1 year only, the 1973 Scout II's had 14 vertical bars between the headlights, a split in the middle, seven bars on each side surrounded by chrome trim pieces and an
International model plate low on the left side. The Scout II offered the following engine block options including the; 196 4-cylinder, 232 6-cylinder (early production), 258 6-cylinder (later production), 304 V-8, and 345 V-8. When is comes to performance
on any level it is often said that there is "no substitute for cubic inches". The same holds true with Scouts and many owners of the era preferred the larger V8s. Today's collectors looking for a unique and classic SUVs are drawn to the more powerful
examples that perform nicely in modern day driving conditions.
In our constant search for unique classic cars, trucks and SUVs, we located this low-mileage Scout II in Lake Havasu, AZ. The owner stated the his grandfather was the original owner and he was selling because, "...it just wasn't getting enough use." He explained that had been the case since new as it was never a primary vehicle and he was 100% positive the current 45k mile odometer reading was accurate. Upon arrival to TX we found the Scout II was in running order and the condition was very original as stated. We set out to restore the International with a goal of making it suitable for comfortable daily driving and maintaining as much originality as we could. Broncos, Jeeps, K5s, and Scouts are still not (and maybe never will be) 6-figure classics. Therefore our restoration was modest but the results will both make a new owner proud and leave him only a few small cosmetic needs (to keep the ownership fun!). The original Burnished Gold Metallic paint color was applied and several items such as the original; steering wheel, shift knob, front bumper and hubcaps were left in place. The interior was treated to brand new seats, carpet and headliner. The final steps included an extensive check of the major mechanics and the addition of brand new rubber on all 4 corners. Features and options include; 345ci V8, Automatic Transmission, 4WD (4x4), Locking Front Hubs, Power Steering, Removable Top, Chrome Mirrors, Chrome Front Bumper, Heavy Duty Custom Rear Bumper, Beige Cloth Bench Seating, Cloth Floor Mats, Owners Manuals, Factory AM Stereo Controls, 15" Factory Wheels & NEW Falken Rocky Mountain 31x10.50 R15LT Tires!
