1978 International Harvester Scout 2 Ii 4x4 345 V8 4 Spd Runs Great Restored on 2040-cars
Brunswick, Georgia, United States
Up for sale is my 1978 IH Scout 2. Its got a 345 V8 and 4 speed manual transmission. It starts right up and runs smooth as silk! It has approximately 10" of lift and drives really well for a lifted vehicle! The scout has been garage kept its entire life. I have unfortunately had to keep it under my carport since I do not have an extra space in my garage at my new house. The vehicle is clean and rust free both on the body and underneath. The floor pans are solid and it is better than any I have seen. The body appears to be all original metal and it does not appear to have any replacement panels installed to the best of my knowledge. The paint is shiny and the body does have a few small scratches and dings from being driven and a few small dings by the front of the passenger door where the door caught the fender somehow when it was being delivered to Georgia by the previous owner (I have no idea how it happened, just going by what he told me :) ) Also the door opens fine and closes fine, no issues, it just has a few small dents.
The interior is in good shape to have some age on it. It has carpeting throughout along with heat insulating panels under the flooring to keep noise and the heat from the engine bay out. The floors are solid as can be underneath this carpeting. The gauges work, although the previous owner had a new aftermarket oil pressure and temp gauge installed so it would be more accurate them the old factory style gauges. The factory voltage and fuel gauges are still hooked up and work great. Speedometer is also hooked up and works, but speed is off due to the larger tires being installed. The scout's heat works great and the scout has an a/c system installed, but the belt has been removed by the previous owner so I have no clue if it works. I think it would be safe to assume that it does not work since they have removed the belt. Not sure what it would need to get it back up and running, but I would bet that the refrigerant is low and it has not been converted over to R134a yet. The compressor would be a great candidate to be used for an onboard air setup so you can air up your tires or run power tools on the trail! The scout has a newer CD player installed along with 4 Memphis car audio speakers. It has a factory center console installed as well. Dash is in good shape although it does have 1 or 2 cracks in it, but I planned on having it wrapped in vinyl at some point. The back seat is also in good shape for its age and it is the fold and tumble model that is highly desired. The soft top is in good shape and was mainly kept in storage since the scout was stored in a garage and only driven in nice weather. The soft top does have 1 small spot where a small holes (size of a dime) was in it but it has been repaired. The top is very easy to take on and off.
The brakes work great. There are new brake lines ran throughout the vehicle and there is a new booster installed. The rear brakes were cleaned and adjusted a while back. The scout starts right up and runs great. It has recently had a tune up with new spark plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter, distributor cap and rotor button replaced. Also there is a brand new Pertronix electronic ignition system installed. The scout has a newer carburetor installed as well. I believe it is a Edelbrock model, but I would have to double check. The scout does not appear to have any oil leaks as I have not seem any drips or spots in my carport. When I got the scout there was a little oil seepage on the engine, but I cleaned it off and tightened down the valve cover bolts a little and the oil pan bolts a little and have not seen any oil residue come back. The transmission fluid has been drained and filled with fresh fluid. Also the front and rear differentials have been drained and filled along with the transfer case. The drivetrain is solid and everything feels great. 4x4 works great and engages and disengages as it should. The auto-locking hubs also work great! I believe these are WARN hubs, but can't remember off the top of my head. The fuel tank is a newer replacement high capacity model and it has no leaks and was removed and does not have any rust or damage inside. The fuel sending unit was also replaced when he tank was inspected.
The lift is a spring over axle conversion and also has a 3" body lift installed along with new urethane body bushings so the body does not squeak like most vehicles with a body lift. It rides great and is solid! The wheels are a polished aluminum wheels that cleans up nicely! I will add more pics so you can see how they clean up! The tires that are installed are 38.5x14.50x15 Super Swamper TSL SX and the rears are like new but the front are slick. They all hold air great but the front tires need to be replaced before you were to take a long trip in it. I have been driving it around town and back and forth to work some (90 miles round trip) with no issues, but they really need to be replaced before you drive it far. I guess I am just used to driving it and am familiar with how it drives :) I have been looking for a good set of tires reasonably priced and have found many sets of like new 35" and 37" tires cheap, but I have been holding out the find a pair of the same tires to match. If you decided to go the new route these tires can be purchased for around $300 each if you have a friend at a tire shop. Retail they are around $350-380 a tire.
The scout would make a great truck for someone that really enjoys these old vehicles! It has been a fun truck to have, but my wife says that something needs to go because she says I have too many toys (I've got a 2013 jeep unlimited rubicon, this scout, a 1979 Scout 2, and a 1971 Ford Bronco). I told her I would list it to make her happy, but I know what the scout is worth and expect to get close to the value of it. I just want someone to get it that will enjoy it as much as I have. I have had many of these old scouts over the years and this one has the best body of any I have seen! Every time I drive it, I have people giving me the thumbs up and always stopping beside me and asking questions about it. It gets a TON of attention and people seem to love it.
If you have any questions please give me a call. I work a normal job Mon-Fri and I am not always able to get to a computer to respond quickly but I can receive calls anytime. My number is 912-223-8714. You can also message me through Ebay as well but by phone would be the quickest way to reach me.
