I purchased this truck from the second owner in Lincoln, NE a couple of years ago. The previous owner purchased the truck straight from the Fire Dept. in or around Thedford, NE. The truck was in service with the Fire Dept. from 1970 until sometime in 2009. On the drivers side fender is the original dealer who sold the truck to the Fire Dept. named Calls Garage(who is still in business today). I called Calls Garage when I bought the truck and they told me they serviced the truck everytime throughout the 39-40 years the truck was in-service. I sent them the picture and the truck brought back fond memories over all those years. So with that said, the miles are accurate on the truck.
MECHANICAL
When I bought the truck I serviced it and buffed the paint out. It had an exhaust leak on the driver side so I took both manifolds off, had them planed and installed new metal gaskets. The exhaust has been replaced at some point and it looks to be the stainless coated pipe. The tires are in great shape with 80-90% tread life left. The brakes seem to work great although I have not had them inspected. Being that I only drive the truck a couple hundred miles a year, it was only important to me that it stopped. Emergency brake does work freely and it holds the truck. From the factory it came with a choke and a hand throttle control. Both work great and work like a charm. I have never put the truck in 4wheel drive, I can do that this week but I'm assuming it works fine because everything is there. Mechanically speaking, I think the truck is great and I would drive it anywhere. Any other questions please call me.
EXTERIOR
The exterior of the truck is 90% original and in great shape for being 43 years old. Rust is a non-factor in this truck, it truly is amazing. The Fire Dept. rattle canned the hood white when the bought it and I eventually had a shop paint the hood red. In my opinion, they did a heck of a job matching the paint. I did leave some dents in the hood and some scratch marks because I wanted the hood to blend in with the rest of the truck. The truck does have some scratches and dents. Besides the hood, the truck has original paint on it. The light on top works great, although I did unhook it from the fuse box because I didn't want to accidentally leave it on. The inside of the bed has been modified to hold a water tank I assume, it's got a couple of drilled holes in it for attachment purposes. That's all I can say about the exterior, mostly original(period correct), some scratches, some dents, but no rust.
INTERIOR
The interior of the truck is amazing. That is the original seat for the truck(no rips or tears). All guages work and everything lights up as it should. The original IH black mat is in excellent condition and really adds to the originality of the truck. The headliner isn't great, but considering it's basically heavy cardboard it's pretty darn good. The steering wheel is great, horn works great. The dash has a couple of cracks, but a good vinyl guy could repair it. Door panels are great and clean up as new. The paint under the black mat on the floor board shine like the exterior of the truck, it's pretty remarkable there's no rust spots. Interior is great, enough said.
ENGINE COMPARTMENT
The engine compartment is amazing. The bolts on the fenders and the brackets for the hood look as new. The black inner fender paint could clean up and look new. The firewall is excellent, very very nice. Engine compartment is really amazing. If somebody spent a couple hours cleaning the compartment, you could eat off it.
SUMMARY
The truck is truly a time capsule. I would keep it but I don't give it the attention it deserves and I don't have the time to drive it. Sorry for the long description, if I missed anything call me. The truck drives great, bid with confidence. Call with questions, 785-633-9336
