2014 Infiniti Q50, Lexus IS 250 fail to achieve Consumer Reports 'Recommended' rating

Infiniti and Lexus might be a little concerned now that both of their new luxury sedans, the Q50 and IS250, were unable to net Consumer Reports vaunted "Recommended" rating during their first year on the market. In fact, not only did the two fail to earn a "Recommended" rating, they finished behind the vast majority of the competition after testing, including the BMW 328i, Mercedes-Benz C250, Lincoln MKZ and Volvo S60 T5.
The Q50 managed to snag a "Very Good" rating overall, but CR criticized it's road manners for not being as thrilling as the car it (sort of) replaces, the G37. The mag called the handling mundane and the steering dull, while also remarking on the poor controls. According to CR, the interior quality is "nothing special." Shade was also thrown at the Q50's reportedly poor ride.
Compared to the IS, though, the Q50 got off easy. CR called it "neither sporty nor luxurious," while criticizing the 2.5-liter V6's lack of oomph and poor fuel economy. The mag then went on to lambaste the IS's handling, steering, interior, cabin space and infotainment system.

The Infiniti QX50 is, to be frank, ancient. It hit the market way back in 2007, and has labored on ever since. Through December of last year, the company only moved 2,727 QX50s. The year before, there were only 2,164 sales, and 3,495 in 2012. What do all three years have in common? The QX50 was Infiniti's slowest seller in each of them. Here's hoping, then, that this latest update will boost the 2+2 crossover's appeal. Being shown today at the 2015 New York International Auto Show, Infiniti has made a number of updates to its smallest crossover, with the most notable being a 3.2-inch stretch in its wheelbase and a 4.5-inch increase in its overall length. That makes for an enormous 4.3-inch increase in the legroom of the formerly cramped second row. Infiniti also made slight increases to the overall ride height, of 0.4 inches in for rear-drivers and 0.8 inches for all-wheel-drive variants. Outside of the dimensional changes, Infiniti also beefed up the former EX37's exterior, with new front and rear bumpers that boast SUV-like scuff plating, as well as LED accents in the new headlights and a new grille that is more in keeping with the brand's current design language. LED taillights sit out back as standard, while Infiniti will happily sell consumers an optional xenon headlight package. Infiniti may have updated the exterior, but the cabin looks largely unchanged, aside from the extra space in the second row. It looks like a complete carryover in terms of features, trim and general layout. Also unchanged is the QX50's 3.7-liter V6 engine. Output remains fixed at 325 ponies and 267 pound-feet of torque. Regardless of whether power goes to the rear or to all four wheels, a seven-speed automatic is in charge of managing the power. Next Infiniti FX to gain interior volume

The Infiniti FX, soon to be renamed QX70 thanks to the Japanese brand's convoluted naming scheme, is currently in the midst of its second-generation. And while we like the compact, sporty crossover's driving character a lot, it lacks the "utility" part of the CUV moniker. That lack of cabin space will be addressed in the future, though.
Automotive News recently sat down with Nissan's global design boss, Shiro Nakamura, to talk about the future of what he called "the icon of Infiniti." And while Nakamura-san admitted the FX/QX70's worth to the brand, its sales have long been something of a disappointment. "Exterior and styling-wise, it's very strong as an icon. But to be honest, its sales volume has not been as big as we wanted," a reality Nakamura believes is due largely to its tight cabin relative to its competition.
Finding the right balance might be difficult, though. The FX/QX70 is selling extremely well in both China and Russia, according to Nakamura, because of its looks. Altering that style in order to increase interior space risks alienating a new and important group of buyers for Infiniti. The designer put it best when he told AN, " It is selling well in China and Russia because it stands out. So we want to maintain that striking look." As it stands, we'll likely be living with the current vehicle for a few more years - AN doesn't expect the third-generation of the FX/QX70 to arrive until 2015 or 2016.
