Infiniti Q60 Concept paints a pretty picture of the brand's future

Infiniti's final teaser for the Q60 Concept may have given away the shape of the curvy coupe ahead of its debut at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, but that's not necessarily such a tragedy for this model because the design has so many subtle touches. The more you look at it, the more cool details and ornate lines you notice. What initially looks fairly simple up front belies a multitude of fascinating details, including the F1-inspired lower air dam and the subtle fin at the tip of the hood. The design around the C-pillar may be complicated but is also attractive thanks to the confluence of design from the rear fender arch, beltline and crescent-shaped cutout in the window. The concept's interior also takes a minimalist approach. It's predominantly covered in cream leather and features sports seats in quilted leather. A mix of Alcantara and carbon fiber trim are able to show off the concept's performance intentions, though. Meanwhile the glass roof makes sitting behind the wheel feel airy and inviting. Underneath, the Q60 Concept's arching hood is the company's conceptual 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V6 and a seven-speed automatic. Infiniti promises the production of the mill is coming in the next two years. The big question is whether the mix of sharp edges and flowing lines on the Q60 Concept really see production without too much alternation. Infiniti plans to unveil the production version next year. Infiniti Q60 Concept previews sexy styling, twin-turbo V6

Okay Infiniti, this was worth the waiting and teasing. Behold, the Q60 Concept, the coupe that foreshadows a future production two-door while also introducing a new family of 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V6 engines. It's fair to say we like it very much. Of course, this is not our first unfettered look at the Q60 Concept. Infiniti's final "teaser" image showed off the final product, but now we can analyze it from all angles, including the lovely, almost S-Class Coupe-like rear end and the clean, fashionable cabin. The Q60 Concept's design, particularly in the swoopy profile, comes across as organic and muscular, particularly in the shape of the front fenders and rear haunches. The car's dead front view reveals a few styling details that were overshadowed by the angle of the teaser image, like the interesting ridge that runs from the grille into the powerfully domed hood. A fixed glass roof gives the cabin an open-air feel, while the overall layout is largely reminiscent of the current Q50 sedan, only with cleaner, updated materials that we wouldn't bet on making production. Thin sport seats look supporting and feature quilted leather bolsters, while a two-tone steering wheel spices up the driving environment. Under the Q60 Concept's hood is the same 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V6 that was first shown on the Q80 Inspiration Concept from the 2014 Paris Motor Show. According to Infiniti, the direct-injected six-pot will arrive in a production car within the next two years. In the Q60, a seven-speed automatic handles power delivery, although it's unclear if a similar gearbox would be used alongside the production engine. Other notable features on this sleek two-door include Infiniti's Direct Adaptive Steering system and the new InTuition system, which promises a "fully customizable digital environment." Infiniti puts EV plans on hold again

Think of it as the green-automotive industry's version of Groundhog Day. Nissan's Infiniti division is putting plans for its first mass-production electric vehicle on hold. Again. The Infiniti LE, whose concept version was unveiled 2012's New York Auto Show, is again being put up on the proverbial blocks, USA Today says, citing a presentation by Infiniti executive Michael Bartsch at a recent company event in Detroit. Essentially, the Nissan division has bigger fish to fry, in the form of boosting overall Infiniti sales, and doesn't yet want to put the effort into introducing the Infiniti LE. The Infiniti EV plans were first postponed by then-Infiniti President Johan de Nysschen during the summer of 2013, as de Nysschen wasn't quite buying into Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn's ambitious electric vehicle sales projections. De Nysschen resigned last summer to join General Motors' Cadillac division. One issue may be the fact that the Infiniti wouldn't be all that different from the Nissan Leaf. Despite the fact that US sales of that EV surged 34 percent last year compared to 2013, to 30,200 vehicles, an Infiniti version was apparently not enough of a selling point within the company. While the Infiniti is sportier looking than the Leaf and would boast inductive, wireless charging, it would have a similar power output and single-charge range as the Leaf.
