10 automakers sued over keyless ignitions

Keyless ignition has rapidly proliferated throughout the auto industry to become a fairly normal feature on new cars. It's supposed to offer the convenience of keeping the fob in your pocket and just pressing a button to drive away. However, ten major automakers are now being sued in US District Court over claims that the system is dangerous, Reuters reports. The suit alleges that people are forgetting to shut off the engine, and the lack of an idle timer is the cause for 13 deaths by carbon monoxide poisoning and multiple injuries. The suit currently includes 28 plaintiffs, according to Reuters, but the lawyers are asking for class-action status to potentially add many more. The case goes after a major swath of the industry, including BMW, Daimler, FCA, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan, Toyota, and Volkswagen, plus their related brands like Acura, Infiniti, Mini, and Lexus. In all, over five million vehicles are affected. The assertion here is that people walk away from their vehicle without shutting it off because they believe the engine shuts off automatically. If parked in a garage, carbon monoxide can build up, leading to poisoning. The lawyers claim automakers know this is a problem and also cite 27 complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about the issue, according to Reuters. The plaintiffs are asking for an automatic shut-off and damages from the companies. These concerns have come up before, though. Toyota previously faced a lawsuit over a carbon monoxide death after a woman accidentally left her Lexus running. Also earlier this year, GM recalled 64,186 examples of the 2011-2013 Chevrolet Volt because owners weren't shutting them off. The problem resulted in two injuries, and the company released a software update to limit the idling time.

Infiniti teases a new concept for the Detroit Auto Show

Infiniti is the latest company to join a steadily growing list of big reveals at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show. It just released a teaser image of a concept it will display. It looks fairly typical of Infiniti, with long flowing curves, and the company's signature grille. And of course, it will be painted white. The company revealed very little about it, not even a name. But a quote from Infiniti's Executive Design Director may shed a bit of light on the car. He talks about "more compact and less intrusive powertrains" giving freedom to design, and that this car has a "long cabin." This leads us to believe that this concept may feature some kind of alternative powertrain, perhaps hybrid or fully electric. It could even use a smaller version of Infiniti's variable compression engine. We also think that this car may have a profile akin to the Jaguar I-Pace, with a much more cab-forward look. When Jaguar revealed the I-Pace, it made a big deal about how going to electric propulsion gave them the opportunity to rethink what looks luxurious, sporty and aggressive, since there wasn't an engine at the front to require a long nose. Infiniti's design director's words sound pretty similar. We'll have more information and photos when the car is fully revealed at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show. Nissan bringing Infiniti brand to Japanese market

Ever hear that the best stuff is saved for export? Just ask Japanese luxury car buyers. It's been decades since Japan's largest automakers set out to take on Europe's finest with dedicated luxury brands of their own, but they have kept those brands largely out of their own domestic market and sold them almost exclusively overseas. But that's beginning to change.
In 2005 Toyota launched the Lexus brand - which it had been exporting since 1989 - in Japan. Honda reportedly planned on bringing its Acura brand to its home market just a few years later, but ended up delaying the move. Now Nissan is reportedly preparing to launch the Infiniti lineup in its own backyard.
This according to a report published in the Japanese business daily Nikkei and now making the rounds of the English-language press. The plan apparently involves offering at least part of the Infiniti model line in domestic Nissan dealers, holding off for the time being on launching a separate dealer network in Japan.
