March Madness upsets good for auto advertisers

There are no Cinderella teams left in the NCAA men's basketball tournament - the fairytales ended with Georgia State's loss to Xavier over the weekend. And even though the Sweet 16 is composed of elite teams - at the time of writing the lowest-ranked squad is 11th-seeded UCLA, which has most championships of any school in the country - there are still underdogs and surprises, and they are good for NCAA business and advertisers. Last year the March Madness Live app, which allows users to watch games on the go, was downloaded 4.5 million times, a jump of more than 40 percent over 2013. Buick sponsors the iOS version of the app, but more than a million of those downloads were for the Android version, sponsored by Infiniti since 2011. Part of Buick's engagement is a "Boss Button" on the livestream sites that can quickly mask the page with something your boss won't question you over. It also sponsors a trick-shot competition for fans, has a display in Bracket Town during the Final Four, and its cars lead the team buses through the city. Infiniti said last year's tourney increased online searches for the brand by 25 percent in March, and things are going even better this year: it's round-by-round bracket game drew 477,859 total entries in 2014, this year's game has signed up 534,350 already and the tournament has another two weeks to go. The luxury brand is all over the event, promoting the QX60 through to the Final Four, then moving its efforts to the Q50. It sponsors the Coaches vs. Cancer charity and will have an Infiniti Lounge near the Final Four venue in downtown Indianapolis. 2016 Infiniti QX50 is new and improved, kind of [w/video]

The Infiniti QX50 is, to be frank, ancient. It hit the market way back in 2007, and has labored on ever since. Through December of last year, the company only moved 2,727 QX50s. The year before, there were only 2,164 sales, and 3,495 in 2012. What do all three years have in common? The QX50 was Infiniti's slowest seller in each of them. Here's hoping, then, that this latest update will boost the 2+2 crossover's appeal. Being shown today at the 2015 New York International Auto Show, Infiniti has made a number of updates to its smallest crossover, with the most notable being a 3.2-inch stretch in its wheelbase and a 4.5-inch increase in its overall length. That makes for an enormous 4.3-inch increase in the legroom of the formerly cramped second row. Infiniti also made slight increases to the overall ride height, of 0.4 inches in for rear-drivers and 0.8 inches for all-wheel-drive variants. Outside of the dimensional changes, Infiniti also beefed up the former EX37's exterior, with new front and rear bumpers that boast SUV-like scuff plating, as well as LED accents in the new headlights and a new grille that is more in keeping with the brand's current design language. LED taillights sit out back as standard, while Infiniti will happily sell consumers an optional xenon headlight package. Infiniti may have updated the exterior, but the cabin looks largely unchanged, aside from the extra space in the second row. It looks like a complete carryover in terms of features, trim and general layout. Also unchanged is the QX50's 3.7-liter V6 engine. Output remains fixed at 325 ponies and 267 pound-feet of torque. Regardless of whether power goes to the rear or to all four wheels, a seven-speed automatic is in charge of managing the power. Vettel and Coulthard drive Russia's very unfinished Sochi Circuit

The next Winter Olympics will happen in Sochi, Russia from February 7-23, 2014. Sometime after that, barring any delays, a portion of the Sochi Olympic Park will be turned into the Sochi Olympic Park Circuit, a 3.65-mile track for the first Russian Grand Prix in 100 years (the last of two Formula One grands prix were held in St. Petersburg).
As we've come to expect from the Infiniti Red Bull team, it recently sent Sebastian Vettel and brand ambassador David Coulthard to the unfinished venue to run the route in Infiniti M sedans and offer some impressions. With average cornering speeds above 62 miles an hour, Coulthard called it a fast street circuit in the Monaco vein.
