Judge reduces damages in fatal Hyundai crash to $81M

Hyundai no longer has to pay $248 million as part of a court ruling from a fatal accident in Montana that killed two cousins in a 2005 Tiburon. The judge hearing the appeal revised the amount down to a total of about $81 million. She upheld the original $8.1 million in actual damages but reduced the punitive damages to $73 million from the previous $240 million.
According to Bloomberg, the judge refused Hyundai's desire to reduce the amount even further. She said in her court order that the company showed "an indifference to or reckless disregard of the health and safety of the motoring public."
In the original case, the families' attorneys alleged that the cracking of a faulty steering knuckle caused the fatal accident. Hyundai argued that fireworks had been let off inside the vehicle, which caused the driver to swerve and crash. In a statement released after the ruling, the automaker claimed that evidence supporting its defense was barred from the trial. According to Bloomberg, had the original amount of damages been upheld, it would have been the sixth-highest amount awarded by a jury in the US this year.

Hyundai teases new Tucson ahead of Geneva [w/video]

Hyundai is giving us a pretty thorough tease of the design for the next-gen Tucson in sketch form ahead of the model's debut at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show on March 3, thanks to a newly released video and image. Up front, there's the latest version of Hyundai's chrome-framed hexagonal grille, and the squared-off wheel wells lend a more rugged appearance. According to the Korean brand's design boss Peter Schreyer in the CUV's announcement, the shape is meant to be a combination of flowing surfaces and sharp lines. The styling definitively takes some cues from the Hyundai Intrado concept from last year's Swiss show. While the grille is larger now, the two of them share similar shapes for the squinting headlights and more pronounced, bulging proportions overall, compared to the current Tucson. Also, judging by the additional shots in Hyundai's teaser video, the rear drops the show car's boomerang-shaped taillights and tiny hatch opening for more conventional features. While no interior looks are included, the clip suggests a more muted hue than the Intrado's eye-searing orange. 2014 Hyundai Equus priced from $61,000*

During an event in Ann Arbor, Michigan today, Hyundai officials confirmed that the updated 2014 Equus sedan, which goes on sale this week, will be priced from $61,000, *not including $920 for destination. That price is for the base-level Signature version; the upgraded Ultimate trim will carry a base MSRP of $68,000. Both prices represent a $1,750 increase over the 2013 model.
Hyundai introduced the 2014 Equus at this year's New York Auto Show, and while it hasn't been vastly reworked, there are a few thoughtful updates both inside and out. For starters, there's a restyled grille flanked with standard LED fog lamps, as well as new 19-inch alloy wheels. Inside, Hyundai has fitted a new instrument cluster and center stack, as well as more premium wood trim.
There's more technology inside the Equus, as well. The instrument cluster now benefits from either a 7.0- or 12.3-inch LCD information screen, and there's a 9.2-inch display in the center of the dash. For rear seat passengers, there are dual 9.2-inch monitors, as well as redesigned console controls.
