Hyundai dumps Genesis Coupe for upscale model

Hyundai has confirmed that it is killing off the Genesis Coupe after the 2016 model year. A replacement for the coupe is expected to come after 2017, but it will fit into the automaker's luxury sub-brand, Genesis. "In regards to the Genesis Coupe, 2016 will in fact be the last model year for this popular, rear-drive sporty coupe," Christine Henley, Product PR Manager for Hyundai, told Autoblog. The vehicle is being replaced by something that fits better into the new Genesis brand's lineup. "A new, more sophisticated and luxurious coupe appropriate for the new Genesis brand is currently under development." Previous rumors surmised that the coupe will get a 3.3-liter turbocharged engine, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel-drive. Inspiration for the upcoming coupe could come from the Hyundai HND-9 Sports Coupe Concept that was revealed a few years ago. Currently, Genesis offers the 2017 G80 midsize sedan and flagship G90 sedan. A luxurious, sporty coupe would fit perfectly in between these two vehicles to compete with more established luxury coupe players, as well as newer competitors like the Lexus RC and upcoming Infiniti Q60. Hyundai sketches out HND-9 luxury sports coupe concept ahead of Seoul

Hyundai has dropped a couple of rendered looks at its forthcoming HND-9 luxury sports coupe concept, which will debut at the 2013 Seoul Motor Show. While full details probably won't be released until then, the Korean automaker has said the butterfly-doored machine will bow with a direct-injection, turbocharged 3.3-liter V6 engine good for around 365 horsepower. The mill is bolted to an eight-speed automatic transmission and puts its grunt to the rear tires. While the doors are pure showcar theater, we dig the Aston-inspired long nose and boisterous rear haunches.
Look for the car to receive an actual introduction on March 28, and while we don't expect to see the HND-9 on showroom floors any time soon, some of the creation's design language may make it to production models. Check out the full press release below.

Hyundai, Kia recall 270,000 cold-weather state vehicles over rust

Hyundai has announced plans to recall 240,000 Sonata and Azera models registered in the northern United States over corrosion caused by the use of road salt. Exposure to the salt can cause rust to form (we know, basic chemistry here), and that the corrosion can change the alignment of the rear wheels, according to Reuters.
Sonatas from the 2006 to 2010 model years, built between March 1, 2005 and January 21, 2010, and Azeras from the 2006 to 2011 model years, built between September 27, 2005 and November 22, 2010, are covered only if they were registered in the following states: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Washington, DC. So basically, every state from the Midwest, to the central Atlantic coast, to New England. It is unclear exactly how many Sonatas or Azeras make up the 240,000 total number.
Hyundai is also recalling 20,300 of its 2013 Santa Fe Sports, while sister company Kia is recalling 9,345 2014 Sorentos. This second recall only covers Santa Fe Sport and Sorento models with the base, 2.4-liter engine and front-wheel drive. Apparently, the front axle driveshaft can develop cracks and separate.
