Hyundai expanding US plant capacity for SUV production
Thu, Mar 12 2015With cheap gasoline still driving CUV and SUV sales, three anonymous sources are reporting to Automotive News that Hyundai is looking to expand production at its Montgomery, AL factory with an eye towards production of high-riders. The Montgomery factory is currently responsible for Elantra and Sonata production, although as both sedans have faced slagging sales, Hyundai is seemingly taking a second look at its production priorities. "It's a new assembly line right next to the current Alabama line. State of Alabama is negotiating final terms," one of the sources told AN. The other two sources, meanwhile, indicated that while the company has been mulling expanded production in America, a final decision hadn't been made yet. As for what vehicle could join the Elantra and Sonata on a new line in Alabama, Korea Investment and Securities auto analyst Suh Sung-moon told AN the Santa Fe could move from its current home at the Kia facility in Georgia, although the Montgomery factory could also accommodate production of the compact Tucson (it's unclear if Suh was referencing the next-generation Tucson that debuted in Geneva or the current model) or even a pickup truck, were Hyundai to go such a route. Meanwhile, AN reports that Korea's Yonhap News Agency expects the Montgomery facility to be able to produce 300,000 vehicles, including an SUV, by 2017. While Hyundai declined Automotive News's inquiries, we have our ear to the ground for any official information from the South Korean marque.
2016 Hyundai Elantra gets new Value Edition [UPDATE]
Sun, May 17 2015Update: Hyundai informs us the 2016 Elantra Value Edition actually collects $1,550 in equipment together for $550 more than the Elantra SE with the Popular Equipment Package. The next-generation Hyundai Elantra reportedly debuts at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show in November, but there's still quite a while before the updated model arrives at dealers. To keep the sedan somewhat fresh among a crowded fielded of competitors, Hyundai is giving the 2016 model year a new Value Edition and some small tweaks to other trims. The 2016 Elantra Value Edition rings up for $19,700, plus $825 destination, and all of them come with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with 145 horsepower and 130 pound-feet of torque along with a six-speed automatic. To earn its budget-friendly name, Hyundai claims the new trim bundles $1,000 in features for $550 more than the Elantra SE with the Popular Equipment Package. On the outside, these models get a sunroof, chrome beltline molding, and turn signals in the side mirrors. The improvements are a little more extensive inside with a tilt-and-telescoping, leather-covered steering wheel, push-button start with proximity key, and heated seats. In addition to the Value Edition, the Elantra Limited now gets standard push-button start with a proximity key and dual climate zones. Hyundai claims that it's a $600 value, but the $21,700 price is the same as last year. Finally, the Elantra Sport is losing some features to lower its price. The trim now retails for $1,350 less than last year at $20,250 with the 173-hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder and six-speed manual or $21,250 with a six-speed automatic. However, to make that savings possible, the leather seats and power sunroof are no longer standard features. The interior now has cloth upholstery. Hyundai recalling 140k Sonatas over seatbelts
Thu, Jul 9 2015Hyundai is recalling about 140,000 examples of the 2015 Sonata in North America to repair a problem with the front passenger seatbelt not latching. Specifically, the problem affects 129,000 of the sedans in the US and 10,401 in Canada. On these models, if the seatbelt tongue is forcibly inserted into the buckle at a certain angle, then it can jam and not latch. Only the front passenger side is affected, and driver would be notified because a warning light would illuminate on the dashboard. The safety campaign covers 2015 Sonatas with production dates between April 25 and December 4, 2014, according to a statement to Autoblog from Hyundai, but there are no reports of injuries from this issue. Owners will receive notification by mail in about a month. To fix the problem, dealers will inspect the part and repair or replace it as necessary. Hyundai has already notified NHTSA about the recall, but the campaign hasn't been added to the agency's website yet. Transport Canada has already posted some information about it, though. Related Video: Hyundai Statement: We recently notified NHTSA of a safety recall we are initiating in the U.S. to repair or replace the front passenger seat belt buckle in approximately 129,000 2015 Sonatas that were built beginning April 25, 2014 through December 4, 2014. We are initiating this action to ensure the safety and quality of the vehicles and the continued satisfaction of our customers. In some cases, if the front passenger seat belt "tongue" is inserted into the buckle forcibly at an angle, the buckle may jam, preventing the front passenger from fastening the seat belt. The front passenger's seat belt warning lamp will illuminate if the front passenger seat belt is not buckled while the seat is occupied. This condition does not result in partial latching of the belt and does not affect the driver or rear passenger seat belt buckles. There are no reports of injuries attributed to this condition.
