First peek inside Hyundai's hybrid Prius fighter

There are two new vehicle rumors that the auto industry can't seem to get enough of these days: "Tesla fighters" and "Prius fighters." The former category is filled up by Porsche and Audi and more. In the ranks of those who want to take on the world's best-selling hybrid, we can add Hyundai, but this time with a potential twist. First, let's take a look at the latest spy shots of the potentially 2017 model year gas-electric hybrid, including our first look inside. This car will be based on the next-generation Elantra that is also supposed to arrive in 2017. Rumor has it that a medium-sized lithium-polymer battery pack could offer 38 electric miles before the 1.6-liter engine takes over. The new hybrid will likely have a new name and could appear at an auto show at some point in 2016. We've seen other versions of this Prius fighter disguised in different camo. Well, alongside the standard gas-electric vehicle, it appears that Hyundai might also be working on an all-electric version of its "Prius fighter." Wearing the "AE" moniker, the all-electric version isn't guaranteed to arrive when the gas-electric car does, and may show up later, according to Green Car Reports. This all fits with Hyundai's promise, in 2014, to introduce a new all-electric car for the US market. We won't be surprised if it has wireless charging, too.

Hyundai N 2025 Vision Gran Turismo concept coming to Frankfurt

Hyundai will be using the Frankfurt Motor Show to tout its N Performance sub-brand and the future possibilities it could create. A purely conceptual extrapolation comes via the N 2025 Vision Gran Turismo, which joins the expanding list of carmaker-created superfast racers for Sony's Playstation game. The company's 2016 World Rally Championship entrant will grace the stand, previewing the car Hyundai will use to try to dethrone Volkswagen. It is a completely new racecar based on the next-generation five-door i20, still undergoing testing now but planned for competition at the 2016 Monte Carlo Rally. The RM15 concept shown at the Seoul Motor Show will be the third demonstration of Hyundai's enthusiast intentions. The carmaker says the mid-engined, Veloster-based coupe is about "suggesting how N driver-focused technologies could come into production," but we imagine that won't mean installing a 296-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbo-four where the rear seats are. All three cars are intended to rework perceptions of the South Korean company, which is working to "create striking and pioneering high performance cars" and make "real and emotional connections with customers." Hyundai Veloster facelift includes new 7-speed DCT, light cosmetics

Hyundai hasn't given the Veloster the exterior overhaul that we expected, but it has outfitted the quirky, oddly doored hatchback with some new tech, at least in the Korean market. The biggest change for the Veloster is confirmation that the previously rumored seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox will replace the current six-speed unit in the Turbo. It's mated to the same 1.6-liter, forced-induction four-cylinder featuring 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. The exterior receives a few tiny tweaks, too, with new wheel designs and slightly different silver trim around the grille, but the bigger changes are found in the cabin. Those alterations aren't limited to new materials: Hyundai has included a new engine sound equalizer for the Veloster that lets drivers select from six different engine soundtracks. The instrument cluster also gets slightly altered, and there are new two-tone looks for the seats, as well. According to a blog post by Hyundai, the price for the Turbo with the seven-speed dual clutch starts at 23.7 million won ($22,000). Unfortunately, there's no official word whether these changes are going to make it across the Pacific to the US market.
