Recently, we took a vacation to Australia, because sometimes we have to get away from all of that other travel and good living that we withstand in order to bring you the latest car news. While there, we grabbed the keys to a Hyundai i40 Tourer, essentially the Sonata wagon we never got a chance to love here.
Even though it didn't have a manual transmission, it did have a diesel and, for reasons beyond that oil-burner, our enduring affections. No, this story will not include another plea for Hyundai to bring it to the US - it likely wouldn't stand a chance against our crossover- and size-crazed mania, but it's a brilliant fit for markets that appreciate tidy haulers.

HyFive hydrogen infrastructure gets $51M boost across Europe

"High five!" was one of the catch-phrases of Sacha Baron Cohen's Kazakh comedic alter ego Borat. A real-world HyFive is being announced by a power broker named Boris. And this is serious business. London Mayor Boris Johnson has announced a program called HyFive, which will see automakers and other entities invest 31 million British pounds ($51 million US) in a demonstration project for hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. By next year, London will have three hydrogen refueling stations, while there will be one each in the Danish cities of Aarhus and Odense and one in Innsbruck, Austria. Leaders of the program are planning for other stations in Sweden, Germany and Italy. The five participating automakers are BMW, Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler, Honda, Hyundai and Toyota, while other companies involved include Copenhagen Hydrogen Network, ITM Power and Linde. Those OEMs will make 110 fuel-cell vehicles available for deployment in Bolzano, Copenhagen, Innsbruck, London, Munich and Stuttgart. The program represents an effort to address the "chicken or egg?" challenge inherent to establishing a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle market. While the powertrain technology provides benefits by combining fossil-fuel-like refueling times with long driving ranges and zero emissions, establishing a refueling network and building fuel-cell vehicles is prohibitively expensive, especially in low volumes. The London mayor is no stranger to green transportation technology. Late last year, Johnson made himself available for a photo opportunity with Ecotive and Frazer-Nash, which had developed a six-passenger extended-range plug-in taxicab. Hyundai will open up some hydrogen fuel cell patents in Korea

Last year, Tesla made its electric vehicle patents open source. Last month, Toyota did the same with some of its hydrogen fuel cell patents. Now, Hyundai is going to let some Korean companies get access to the automaker's patents as parts of a innovation center project in Gwangju, South Korea. Just Auto reports that about 1,000 "unused patents" belonging to Kia and Hyundai will be made available to participants in a new automotive start-up hub. There will be 12 of these hubs in Korea, not all focused on hydrogen fuel cells. Hyundai said that it will help raise $164 million to help turn Gwangju in a center for eco-friendly industry. Phil Floraday, Hyundai Motor America manager of Midwest Product Public Relations, told AutoblogGreen that, "The main purpose of the patents mentioned in the story will be to nurture small- and medium-sized businesses in the Gwangju area. While we cannot clarify all the patents at this time, we can tell you that they are not entirely focused on FCEV or eco-friendly patents only."
