The Kia Soul EV has been awarded a MotorWeek's Drivers' Choice Award. Winning the honor for Best Eco-Friendly Vehicle, "The Kia Soul EV is the perfect EV," according to MotorWeek host and executive producer John Davis. "It has more power and range compared to other affordable all-electric vehicles. Plus, its funky style makes driving the Kia Soul EV really cool." The Soul EV has a driving range of about 93 miles on a single charge, and offers an interior roomy and comfortable enough to earn MotorWeek's praise. Read more in the press release below. Virgin Hotels will provide its Chicago guests car services in the Tesla Model S. Guests can get rides to and from the hotel in a red, dual-motor Model S P85D. Virgin Hotels offers the EV services as part of its sustainability program. "Tesla is the hottest electric car on the road right now, and we're elated to provide our hotel guests with this chic house-car service while also helping to reduce our carbon footprint," says Virgin Hotels vice president of sales and marketing Doug Carrillo. "For Virgin Hotels it's important to provide services our guests desire but do so with the environment in mind whenever possible." Hyundai has announced the first lease of its Tucson Fuel Cell in Canada. Hyundai chose the Vancouver couple, Jennifer Ma and Clayton Crawley, as the first buyers in part because they live near both a dealership and a fueling station, the latter of which sources its hydrogen from a chemical company that produces the gas as a byproduct. Crawley, whose children love the beach, says, "Getting there while reducing our environmental impact will be awesome." Read more at Automotive News. The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is providing $30 million in grant money for Proterra electric buses. Six transit agencies will buy 28 of the EV buses for a variety of projects. Proterra CEO Ryan Popple calls the funding a "tremendous validation for the company." In total, the FTA is handing out $55 million in grant money for the deployment of American-made electric buses. Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell sales not hitting target [UPDATE]

UPDATE: Hyundai spokesperson Derek Joyce contacted Autoblog to clarify that 1,000 units is a global production goal, not a sales goal. Hyundai's aim to get 1,000 examples of the Tucson Fuel Cell out to the public worldwide is falling well behind the company's original hopes. As of the most recent accounting through May 2015, the Korean automaker has managed to move just 273 of them globally since the FCVs first went on sale in Korea in 2013. Hyundai reportedly sold 76 Tucson FCVs in 2013, 128 in 2014, and 69 so far this year, according to Korea's Yonhap News Agency. Of those, the vast majority were shipped to the US and Europe with 116 and 117, respectively. Another 29 remained in South Korea. However, the automaker's vice president of corporate and product planning in the US said in May that it had actually only leased about 70 of the vehicles here. The 1,000-unit global goal by the end of 2015 is almost certain not to be met. The Yonhap News Agency points to a lack of refueling infrastructure as a major problem in marketing the Tucson Fuel Cell. There are 11 hydrogen stations in all of South Korea, and just of them are in Seoul. The situation isn't much better in the US with around 10 of them open to the public, mostly in California. In Korea, cost is also an issue because even the recently reduced price of 85 million won (76,170) is high and comes without government subsidies.

Hyundai shows Walking Dead Veloster Zombie Survival Machine at Comic-Con

The Walking Dead, the hit zombie apocalypse show on AMC, has enjoyed a marketing tie-in with Hyundai for two seasons now. If you've watched the show, you'd no doubt seen Rick Grimes, his sociopath-in-training son Carl and emerging hero Glenn Rhee avoiding the dead behind the wheel of a light-green Hyundai Tucson. That relationship expanded beyond the show when Hyundai brought an Elantra Coupe-based Zombie Survival Machine to last year's San Diego Comic-Con.
For this year's Comic-Con, the new Zombie Survival Machine is just a touch faster, funkier and deadlier. Based on a Hyundai Veloster Turbo and built by Galpin Auto Sports to decapitate as many Walkers as possible, this four-door hatch has been heavily modified. The headlights, taillights and windows are all protected with a combination of wrought iron and chainlink fencing. There's also plenty of armor on the body panels.
Passive zombie killing features abound, like the "horde plow" on the front bumper and sawblade grille. But by and large, the majority of the Veloster Turbo Zombie Survival Machine's offensive power comes from a combination of firearms and chainsaws. A .50-caliber machine gun is mounted on the roof, along with a pair of assault rifles on the hood. Each door features blades along the base and a machine gun. Melee weapons can be found in the back, including a spiked baseball bat or katana.
