Judge reduces damages in fatal Hyundai crash to $81M
Wed, 24 Sep 2014Hyundai no longer has to pay $248 million as part of a court ruling from a fatal accident in Montana that killed two cousins in a 2005 Tiburon. The judge hearing the appeal revised the amount down to a total of about $81 million. She upheld the original $8.1 million in actual damages but reduced the punitive damages to $73 million from the previous $240 million.
According to Bloomberg, the judge refused Hyundai's desire to reduce the amount even further. She said in her court order that the company showed "an indifference to or reckless disregard of the health and safety of the motoring public."
In the original case, the families' attorneys alleged that the cracking of a faulty steering knuckle caused the fatal accident. Hyundai argued that fireworks had been let off inside the vehicle, which caused the driver to swerve and crash. In a statement released after the ruling, the automaker claimed that evidence supporting its defense was barred from the trial. According to Bloomberg, had the original amount of damages been upheld, it would have been the sixth-highest amount awarded by a jury in the US this year.
Hyundai i20 Sport previews future N Division hot hatches
Fri, Jan 8 2016Hyundai is in the process of launching its own performance sub-brand that, eventually, will yield its own line of hot hatches. But while we wait for those to arrive, the Korean automaker has given us a little taste of what's to come with the i20 Sport you see here. Launched exclusively in Germany (where Hyundai Motorsport is based), the Hyundai i20 Sport is based on the Korean automaker's Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo rival – and the basis for its World Rally Championship contender. The new Sport variant is more of a warmed-over job than an outright hot hatch, but it's not without its share of performance enhancements. The suspension is lowered and mounted to 18-inch OZ wheels. It features a new aero kit, though you might have missed it given the attention-grabbing (but optional) graphics. And the engine – while just a modest 1.0-liter turbocharged inline-three – produces a not inconsequential 120 horsepower. That's fairly competitive for an engine that size... especially when you can row the most out of it with a six-speed manual like the one fitted to the i20 Sport. Those specs are a promising harbinger of things to come. Hyundai's N division has already recruited top talent from BMW M GmbH, shown us where its heart is at with the N 2025 Vision Gran Turismo concept, and promoted itself through the company's WRC effort. We're looking forward to seeing how the i20 N (or whatever it's called) will shape up, but in the meantime the Sport model you see here gives us an idea of what it will look like. Hyundai, Kia and U of M studying 'highway hypnosis'
Wed, 28 Aug 2013Next up on the hot-button list of things that can kill you behind the wheel: "highway hypnosis." That's the zombie-like, autopilot phase you get into on a long highway drive when there isn't much to distract you, like curves or traffic. Digging further into what it is and how to combat it, Hyundai-Kia engineers and the University of Michigan are commencing a study that will measure brainwave activity in order to track the body's slide into highway hypnosis.
We're not sure how much overlap this has with Mercedes-Benz's Attention Assist, which tracks more than 70 in-car parameters to determine when you're not focused on the road anymore. That system is billed as an alarm against fatigue, in our experience it does more than that - if you use your phone while driving, for instance, it will chirp.
They don't know what form a warning system will take yet, but Hyundai-Kia plans to develop a method for warning drivers when they being to zone out. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were more than three thousand deaths and nearly 400,000 injuries due to distracted driving in 2011.
